The University of Kansas is extending its hand to a few community colleges in the area. Butler Community College in particular is taking this step to pave the way for its college students to earn dual degrees. Butler Community College initially does not offer such options. With the help of University of Kansas School of Nursing, Butler and three other Kansas community colleges are set to launch a new program that allows students to earn dual degrees simultaneously. Butler Community College primarily offers associate degree level courses only. Aside from its links with University of Kansas, the institution is also partnering with Ottawa University on a business degree initiative that is launching this fall, as reported by The Wichita Business Journal. Butler’s students can receive an associate’s degree in business administration and at the same time take additional courses from Ottawa University to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration. The degree also concentrates in marketing. …show more content…
With the University of Kansas School of Nursing partnership, these colleges are also enabling students to grab the opportunity to address shortages in nursing employment and medical degrees. University of Kansas is making its mark in the educational field, as well. Aside from partnering with local community colleges, University of Kansas is also making strides abroad. A group of University of Kansas researchers are examining how female Vietnamese leaders are represented in the Vietnamese media, as reported by the University of Kansas. Stereotypes are found in such media coverages. The study looks into the subject of gender bias. Because the University of Kansas is considered to be a major comprehensive research and teaching university, the study finds that the media influences public perceptions of gender
While they do have a tremendous focus on workforce development and training, the opportunity to take a more active role in higher education exists. By adjusting their focus to act as a bridge for students, the community college has the ability to soften the transition financially and educationally. Community colleges must move beyond their reliance on open acceptance policies and actively pursue students who would otherwise attend universities. By offering comparable course tracks that will challenge and educate they can move even further past the image of being a second class institution. More focus must be placed on both building articulation agreements with the universities and educating potential students about the benefits of making the community the next stop on their education
Southern University A&M College welcomed Dr. J.S. Clark as the new African American leader and president in 1914 after the big move. As Dr. Clark as president, he made numerous improvements on campus and off campus. He established a Junior College, teacher-training curriculum, Agricultural Extension Program, a summer normal school, six brick buildings for instructional activities, five brick dormitories, and eleven wooden structures for the faculties. Before his retirement came, he funded money from the government to build a library, a football stadium, an administration building, a gymnasium, and additional dormitories. During this time period, Felton G. Clark, J.S. Clark only son, was one of Southern’s most promising
Dual enrollment enables students to earn transferrable college credit toward a degree or credential by providing high school students with the opportunity to enroll in college courses and earn college credit through partnerships between local school districts and institutions of higher education. “Miss Representation” is a documentary film that is made by Jennifer Seibel Newsom. This film talks about many issues from the roles of females in politics, and the ways in which media negatively impacts women. The film examines how the media have contributed to the underrepresentation of women. Therefore, eventually, the film is persuading people to be open-minded, and study how media affects our perception, judgment, and behaviors. The targeted audience of this film is all people who live in America. People should be convinced to change their mind about stereotypes on women. Jennier effectively convinces the audience that the mainstream media has mainly contributed to the under-representation of women through the use of statements claimed
Two specific groups that I identify with as part of my decision to attend Columbia Southern University is based on my family and work. As an individual my choice to attend is based on my own desire to achieve a higher education in order to obtain a job that is satisfactory to the life and goals I have mapped out for myself. By having a job for which I have specifically attended school for, it will allow me to get and sustain a career conducive to my own happiness and prosperity. While my own individual choice to attend school is great, I have a family that encouraged me greatly in this decision. Both my mother and father, between the two, have a Master’s degree in criminal justice, and a Bachelor's degree in paramedic studies. Naturally
Community college is a great institution for students to start their educational journey. Especially when they do not have the funds or lack some of the prerequisite that a university would require. Community college was created to serve the community, traditional and non-traditional students with the best higher education and lifetime learning opportunities. The faculty and staff members at a community college is there to provide leadership in education while going above and beyond to recognize the needs of the students and the community by providing excellent educational programs and support services that are available to all who have the opportunity to take advantage of them. “Student services now include recruitment and retention, counseling, student activities, student health, financial aid, academic support, career centers, transfer centers, and supplemental services such as transportation, child care, and services tailored for specific populations of students” (Cohen, Brawer, & Krisker, 2014, pg. 209). My philosophy in fulfilling the role and mission of the community college, is to establish the mission, vision, goals and values to guide all students on their journey to strive to become successful both in school and in today’s economy.
Community colleges in the United States develop rapidly and have become a vital component of the postsecondary education delivery system. As of 2011-2012 school year, 45% of all undergraduate students were enrolled in public two-year colleges, approximately 8.3 million students (Knapp et al., 2012. Cited by AACC Fast Facts). And it seems that with globalization and Obama’s education agenda, the trend of growing enrollment in community colleges won’t change. A high school graduate who decides to pursue postsecondary education may face with a dilemma--whether enroll in a community college or a traditional four-year college. Even within a community college, a student may be faced with a choice—enroll in a vocational program and enter workforce after graduation with a vocational certification, or choose an academic program with an intention of transferring to four-year institutions.
College degrees are the new high school diplomas so choosing the right institution is important. College degrees are becoming more and more common and employers are looking out for them. Different colleges provide different opportunities and every individual has unique needs. Programs at these colleges may have the same subjects and programs but, are taught differently. The differences in these programs and colleges can be in cost, classes offered or required, and the campuses there. Culinary programs at Butler Community College and Washburn University differ in many ways including classes required, academics campus life, and costs.
Media influence is one of the most powerful economic and cultural forces today. By deciding who gets to talk, what shapes the debate, who writes, and what is important enough to report, media shape our understanding of who we are and what we can be. You could go to a film, switch on the TV, tune in to the radio, turn the pages of a magazine, or surf online. Regardless of your choice of media, you’d have a good chance of encountering stereotypes that perpetuate gender discrimination. The “Miss Representation” documentary film written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom exposes how mainstream media and culture contribute to the under representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.
The role Dual Credit has played in my decision to attend CWI has opened my eyes to how good of a college CWI is. The curriculum is great and well executed by the instructors. Due to these factors from Dual Credit, it has influenced me to go to CWI because it is one of the best community colleges in my eyes. The staff of CWI are very friendly and always there when you need them. When I took my online courses for Dual Credit, the professors at CWI were useful and always answered any questions along with the staff of CWI that visited Vision Charter School to help us with Dual Credit

After comparing Yale University,Kaplan University, and Stanford University based on my criteria of distance from home, cost of living, and tuition cost,Kaplan University would be the best choice in helping me pursue a career in nursing.
There isn't anything more important to community colleges than the certainty that they can and should provide all qualified people who are looking to be accepted with admittance (Vaughan). The people of the community college represent forty-four percent of all undergraduates and forty-nine percent of students attending college for the first time (David). These students include a lot of minority students, students with a low social standing and the non-standard (age twenty-five and older) student who commonly enters college less academically equipped (David). Most community colleges have made immense advancement in reducing a lot of geographical and economic blockades that have in the past limited college admittance (David). Community
Instead of attending classes at my high school, I only attend college classes and the dual-credit system will allow me to graduate next year with both my high school diploma and my associates degree. This program has been such a blessing and I truly believe that it has helped me take a glance at what the college environment will be like wherever I attend university. Although the classes are harder and expect more from me, I now know that I am ready and able to take on such challenges. I am currently on track to receive my associates degree of arts with an emphasis in psychology by
Transferring to a four-year college or university can be challenging depending on some factors, but it is not an impossible task. Two-year colleges like NOVA are working closely with four-year universities to ensure this transition is smooth and easy. Four-year institutions and universities have also recognized what a transfer student can bring to their schools. Most students attend community college with a plan of transferring to a four-year university. Community Colleges have great opportunities for their students, with high resources, affordable expenses and small classrooms students have many reasons for choosing community colleges as a freshman. Nonetheless, an Associate Degree is designed to be a transition rather than an end goal. According to a study done by Community College Research Center (CCRC), While 81 percent of entering community college students indicate they want to earn a bachelor 's degree or higher, only 33 percent of entering students actually transfer to a four-year institution within six years (CCRC,2016). There are many factors why students should consider transferring to a university to at least earn a bachelor’s Degree. The main point being, four-year university helps students continue a path of academic and career success. As a student moves out of the two years’ community college experience, the academic opportunities become broader.
