Matt Lamkin’s “A Ban On Brain-Boosting Drugs is Not the Answer” first appeared in Chronicle of Higher Education in 2011. The question that some may ask is- what is PTSD- post traumatic stress disorder. Well “PTSD is one of the most common mental health conditions” in the United States (Charles, 2013). There are two different types of PTSD, civilian PTSD and combat PTSD. Civilian PTSD is when someone witnesses or is a part of a tragic event. These events can include a natural disaster, living through a violent act or neglect; experience a sudden death of someone close and witnessing or being in a tragic accident or event, such as a car accident or 9/11. Post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD) is part of many veteran’s lives in the U.S. today. PTSD is a serious mental and emotional disorder that people often don’t understand or don’t know about. It’s defined as a mental illness that develops after a person has lived through a traumatizing event, such as sexual assault, physical abuse, threat of death, or serious injury. Most people who experience a distressing event don’t develop PTSD, but for those who do, it’s extremely terrifying to go through.

First, I think it is very important that we have a clear definition of what PTSD is. Getzfeld & Schwartz (2012) defined PTSD as, ““An anxiety disorder that typically occurs after being exposed to a traumatic event such as war or violence; warning signs consist of: anxiety, the avoidance of stimuli linked with the trauma, flashbacks in which the traumatic event is relived mentally, and a "numbing" of emotional responses” (Getzfeld & Schwartz, 2012).

As you know, I started my shift at Med/Surg yesterday morning with 5 patients. I was doing my best to get my shift assessments done for all 5 patients before Brett comes in around 9:30. Some of my patients had questions, concerns, or complains about their care, so I was not able to document my shift-assessments in Meditech before Brett came. Then, I spent another 30min for SBAR report with Brett.
