Getting an up-close experience for yourself is better than watching it through someone else's eyes. When I received the grand opportunity to stay overnight at Denison University, honestly, at the time I had low expectations. However, after experiencing what Denison had to offer my mindset about this school changed. So what was it that sparked my interest? Well, for one it had to do with the classes and how much students were actively participating as well as asking the professor challenging questions. As a leader, I like to see other leaders take the initiative, questioning what they are learning while not just eating everything they are fed. Furthermore, the second reason had to do with the closeness of the group of African-American students
I decided to attend North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University because I wanted a HBCU experience. For most my life, I was surrounded by diversity. The schools I attended had a healthy balance of students from all races. Even though that was good I wanted a change of environment. Throughout high school I was taught the bare minimum of black history. Each year, the great deeds of Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, and Rosa Parks were drilled into my head. When I toured A&T they provided me with information on black history that I was not even aware of. After the tour, I made my decision to attend A&T and gain more knowledge. When I came to college the biggest challenge I faced was time management.
UNC Charlotte has made a significant impact on my undergraduate career because this campus has an abundance of resources, a helpful staff, a diverse atmosphere, and plenty of opportunities for campus involvement. This university has a variety of staff, all of which have been helpful in my college experience. They are excellent about working with students so they can gain the most out of their educational experience. For example, when I have sought out more information on which portion of Spain to go to, so that I may improve my Spanish fluency, my professor was extremely helpful. She sat down with me and explained about what it is like living in Spain, tips for where to go, and what to expect from the different regions. This valuable information
Attending a Historically Black College and University is something I have never imagined, by reason of living in a world where competition is a standard. Growing up during my childlike years I have attended schools where instructors would not take the time to avail you because they are brought under the impression that everyone is on that same level of knowledge. All my life I was stationed in an educational environment where the majority of students were predominantly white. Therefore, making an effort to be driven has guided me where I am today since contention was at an all-time high. At first, I wanted to attend a predominantly white institution as I formulated my college choice. I have always had to compete against everybody, and I knew that my success would derive from my emulation. Virginia Union University was a college I decided on instead because I sought to be in an environment surrounded by people, who are uplifting and exhilarating,
Attending Kennesaw State University has been a very rewarding journey. As a current senior in college, I have been given the chance to experience the University environment. An environment full of my interaction with my fellow classmates working in study groups and tutoring sessions. Also having the option to sit in on my professor's 2nd lecture that you did not understand fully during your class period.
I chose NDSU because I feel like I was pretty well acquainted with the campus during my time in high school. Each summer, for FFA, my chapter, along with others from across the state, spent a week here competing in different agricultural competitions. Also, I talked with alumni from this nursing program, and they all said it was set up very well, and also put them on a track to getting a good job afterwards. When I came for a tour earlier this spring, I got to hear a speech from the Dean of nursing, and I just sort of felt like this was the right place. On a side note, I like being here because of the agricultural side of NDSU as well, even if I’m not necessarily going into a field pertaining to it. It seems more like home to me, when the person next to me, going into Vet Tech, rides horse as much as I did.
Before I was accepted to this University back in 2012, my school took us on a trip to visit the school. When we arrived on the bus I was so excited. When I stepped off the bus, I knew that this school was made for me. The way the school looked to the way they operated fit me. The operation of the school is very easy to learn and easy to adapt to. The operation included easy access to counselors for first year students as well as transfer students. This is very helpful for the students who are new to school and do not have anyone to show them around, like I did not. I also loved the way they had Freshman’s in particular dorms
The University of North Carolina Wilmington gives a welcoming and home-like feeling to all who attend. Once I step foot on campus, it reminds me of the privilege I have of staying home. It has always been the college I've wanted to attend. The small and diverse community is what keeps me here in Wilmington, North Carolina and UNCW fulfills my dreams of not leaving. I find the mixture of races and gender to be essential in a community or school. It defines a person including their culture and allows everyone to be different from one another. It proves that we can all get along and work together to create greater changes as a whole; UNCW has that variety. However, not only does the diverse environment attract me, but so does the beautiful campus.
Historically black colleges and universities should be persevered because of the supportive environment. If you attend a HBCU you with find that a host of very devoted and accomplished faculty and professors. At most universities there is a hundreds of students professors must teach on the daily bases and often students become numbers. With a larger class sizes professors can’t take the time to get to know their students or even learn their names. At HBCUs, students have an opportunity to get more one-on-one assistance with their professors. Professors are more willing to go the extra mile to make sure you make the best academic decisions and to perform well in your studies. At HBCU you can meet new people who come from similar backgrounds
I choose to attend the University of Florida for the culture of community that exists on the campus. The University of Florida has always been a school that wants its students to succeed, but what is the most interesting aspect is that the students push each other together to achieve their goals. We live in a society where it is a "Man vs Man" world and that only one can succeed. Here at the University of Florida, we challenge those social norms and try to create a pathway that fits for everyone. Here, we just don't have dreams, because as gators, we make those dreams plans and those plans into reality. Being able to accomplish or do something that makes your life fulfilling is what made me want to come to the University of Florida and continue to give back to the place that gave me the chance to improve myself and help others improve too.
At some of the colleges you will find people who come from similar backgrounds and circumstances and who have had simular cultural experinces. The professors will be there to help nurture and guide you throughout your college education. Lastly , a major advantage is the cost of tuition at HBCUs is much cheaper than other universities. Historically Black Colleges are starting to have more white students than blacks in the schools.
Goals are what propels people forward in life so that they can be more successful, or at least believe they are becoming more successful. Having a goal is what brought me to Duquesne University. Being the youngest in my entire clan of a family has put tremendous pressure on myself to be great. Therefore, I am here in this urban arena to see whether or not I can make something of myself and prove to my family that even though I am young and quiet, I can have a presence within the family. Another reason is linked to another goal: independence. Growing up, I was always independent, and at times when I was just a child, that was not always accepted. Now coming to accredited Duquesne University to pursue my degree will enable me to accomplish my
Considering my friends were all attending the Science and Tech program at Roosevelt, I was a lonly bright start in the dark night. I knew very few people going to this school with me, so it was a chance to experience a new life. I could make new friends, build new relationships, and just overall get a fresh start. This is the experience I am hoping to get to experience once again with going to college. Just the chance to meet new people, and understand where they come from and the opportunities i have to learn about
My father, throughout my entire life has talked about his college experiences at Randolph Macon. The numerous experiences he talked about whether it would be about campus life, the great community in Ashland, VA, or the times he spent on the football field. Randolph Macon would provide me with the exact skills I would need to become a great success in the future because, the college would give me the liberal arts education that can give me a general idea of all careers that are open to me, Randolph Macon has such a diverse population of students I would be able to interact with different people that you wouldn’t normally meet, and Randolph Macon provides programs to help students know exactly what they need to get through college.
I wanted to go to a black college because I wanted to go to a school that everyone was the same ethnicity as me. My college life would be a lot more fun because black colleges just know how to bring the excitement to me. This motivated me to be part of that excitement and open up more so I can do more things in college. Then they have the many opportunities in stem such as mathematics and engineering that I want to proceed in. Also, these colleges have a more family-oriented feel that shows that the staff really cares about you and want to help you through college. Then they have many clubs and organization that you can join and created long lasting bonds with different people. I want to join many clubs so I can experiences different tasks
Just picturing myself as a Tulane student gives me shivers. Tulane boasts that of the most prestigious colleges: distinguished faculty, intimate class sizes and a campus graced with abundant greenery. All of these elements are very attractive to me as a student, but what is that captivates me? The philanthropic nature of every student.
