Poetry Poets use many ways when they want to communicate something using poems. Poems are used as a means of passing ideas, information and expression of feelings. This has made the poets to use the natural things and images that people can relate with so that they can make these poems understandable. The most common forms of writing that are used by the poets are the figurative language for example imagery and metaphors. In addition, the poets use the natural landscape in their attempt to explore the philosophical questions. Therefore, this essay will explore the forms that have been used by the poets in writing poems using the natural landscape. The essay will be based on poems such as ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’ by …show more content…
Shelley in his poem ‘Ode to the West Wind’ has used similes in his poem. He states that, “the leaves dead are driven like ghosts from an enchanter fleeing.” He also states that, “the winged seeds where they lie cold and low each like a corpse within its grave.” As observed from these examples, the poets will use these techniques to assist in easier interpretation of the poem. The poets also use metaphors when writing poems. Metaphors refer to the use of certain words to mean otherwise in the context of the poem. However, metaphors are sometimes hidden in the poem such that they require the reader to figure out their existence in the poem. This will be easy when the poet employs the physical environment that is well understood by the reader. In addition, metaphors will strengthen the ideas that the poet wants to pass across. Metaphors will therefore make it easier for the readers to interpret and understand the meaning that the poet intended to communicate. Shelley has used a metaphor in his poem where he states ‘…Pestilence-stricken multitudes’. He states this to indicate to the reader that he is not just addressing a pile of leaves. Therefore, this helps to understand the deeper meaning of the poem. He also states about the ‘wintry bed’, which is meant to show his mood in the poem. Poets also use the landscape in writing poems because of the inspiration that they get from such places. This could be based on some memory or the history of the place and
The world has several great poets and many mind-blowing works, each with its own way of portraying its own message and some the same ones. Jane Flanders wrote the poem named “Cloud Painter” she shows the world from an artistic way, using a painter and his canvas to help the reader picture the true meaning behind the words and images created. Robert Frost takes on the same idea but uses a less complex example so that it makes his work easy to understand while not revealing the real meaning of the poem. Frost and Flanders are just two of the many poets that use nature as a way of explaining the very lessons in life. Each poet has a different way of presenting similar images but from a different perspective.
The world has several great poets and numerous mind-blowing works, each with its own way of portraying its own message using symbolism to represent lessons of everyday life. Jane Flanders wrote the poem named “Cloud Painter” she shows the world from an artistic way, using a painter and his canvas to help the reader picture the true meaning behind the words and images created. Robert Frost takes on the same idea, but uses a less complex example so that it makes his work easy to understand while not revealing the actual meaning of the poem. Frost and Flanders are just two of the many poets that use nature as a way of explaining the very lessons in life. Each poet has a different way of presenting similar images but from a different perspective. Poems are short stories that have a meaning behind them without revealing them in obvious ways. Although some are confusing and may use a different style there are a few that present the same message even if they are written by a different poet. “Cloud Painter” written by Jane Flanders uses the clouds and other subjects of nature. Such as trees and the hills. to help the reader picture the true meaning behind her poem. Robert Frost's poem by the name of “Nothing Gold Can Stay” also takes the nature route to convey the point of his poems words and their Each has a unique way of creating an idea that most can relate to emotionally and physically.
In the poem “The fish” it uses allot of figurative language. For example in stanza one line one “I caught a tremendous fish” The author uses figurative language by using Hyperbole. I believe so because she says she caught a tremendous fish. When you think about it the word tremendous is pretty huge. I believe the word “tremendous” brings an exciting tone to the poem. Also in stanza two lines 5 and 6 “Here and there his brown skin hung in strips” “like ancient wallpaper” I believe the author uses simile. I do so because he compares to things using the word “like” By using the words “brown skin” and “ancient wallpaper” brings an old image to the fish and a tone of detail. Also in stanza 5 it says “the dramatic reds and blacks” “of his shiny entrails”
Repetition is a pretty basic poetry device that just repeated words or phrases to emphasize their importance. Metaphors on the other hand are a thing that can make ideas go above and beyond. According to Dr. Peter Fuda metaphors make big, complex things simple and are more familiar (Fuda 1). That is why they are so vital in making these two works good.
Metaphors allow the reader to paint a picture of written words referencing images that they are familiar with. Like any other animal, there is a hierarchy of strength and therefore
It creates imagery by comparing two subjects. The title of the poem suggests the importance of similes as it is one, “Words Like Rivers.” This title is also significant because it was also used in the second part of the poem. In this part of the poem, the narrator states that all black men drink and it is this drunkenness that causes them to “stream words like river.” This simile causes the reader to imagine a nonstop stream of slurred words.
The poetry is a unique way to express the feelings, tell the story or just entertain others. It has been around for a long time. It was developing and expanding throughout the civilized man-kind life. There are many topics discussed using poetry, but some of them are mostly preferable. For example, God, nature or relationship are the things that are often seen in the ancient poetry as well as a modern poetry. George Soutar claims that the Greeks were moderns in their thought that nature is wholly indifferent to man. This view handicapped the introduction of external na-ture as an emotional element (Kofoid 73). The truth is that the poetry primarily draws connec-tions between human existence and the outside world. In the poem, the nature can be introduced as a person’s world or as an outside world. “Lake Ice” by Sara Quinn Rivira is a tiny story that, actually, holds a lot of information about the protagonist and her “first marriage” experience. The poem focuses on the nature introduced as a person’s world where the protagonist is shown as
A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or a phrase is compared to an object or action that otherwise wouldn't be the same. In using metaphors this elevated the images and emotions that are described by the author. “Out of the night that covers me” (1) is the first metaphor that will be read in the poem. Night is represents the feeling of suffering and pain that the author is trying to describe during this poem.
Many poets commonly use imagery as a primary literary device in their poems to convey important themes with objects, symbols, and motifs throughout the piece; the author of “This Lime-tree Bower my Prison” is no exception. Throughout the poem, figurative language is present in the form of descriptions and relationships to nature. The imagery of nature describing the progression in the speaker’s attitude reflects the transitioning between stages of thinking - changing of reliance and thoughts on nature as a higher being to a reliance on the self and individual thought. The things found in nature, from flowers to sunsets, are used to describe the movement of the poem and the changes in the speaker’s attitude throughout. Nature is a pivotal point
Nature has an undefinable meaning as the theme is utilised in literature, and it has been a topic of reflection within the Romanticists since the beginning of the era. Romanticism and nature and inextricably linked ideas. Poets; Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman wrote during the romantic era, and both drew heavily from aspects of nature in their work. Nature can be paralleled against several things, including humanity and the idea of life and death. The contrast between the natural world and the artificial world, and what this means for society, is also strongly eluded to in Dickinson and Whitman’s poems. Each poet uses nature as the backbone to their poetry in several instances. Dickinson’s, “Hope is the Thing with Feathers”, (Dickinson, 19) and “My Life Has Stood A Loaded Gun”, (Dickinson, 69) are strong examples of this. Whitman’s, “Song of Myself”, (Whitman, 29) and, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d”, (Whitman, 255) are also poems that show the connection between nature and romanticism. Poets, Dickinson and Whitman engage with romanticism in a creative and constructive manner through the utilisation of the natural world.
Dictionary of literary terms defines a metaphor as “a figure of speech which makes implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristic.” To put it differently, a metaphor connects two very unlike objects with a common characteristic. However, why should poets or writers, for that matter, even use metaphors within their works? Simple, metaphors allow the writer room for creativity. At times, human beings do tend to be very direct in their statements. In other occasion, human beings tape into their imagination to describe something. For example, one might state “it is raining cats and dogs.” It is not literally raining cats and dogs. However, the metaphor helps describe heavy rain
The poem “Metaphors” is a big metaphor itself. The metaphor represents a woman being pregnant. The tone
Nature, there is just something about it that intrigues all of us. Whether it be the changing of the leaves during fall, the first snowy morning during winter or the birth of new life during the spring. We all have our different ways of connecting to nature and expressing those connections. In the poem Spring and All by William Carlos Williams he is expressing his thoughts and emotions about spring. While in the poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost he expresses the connections one can make with a snowy winter night. During this essay comparisons and contrasts will be made between these two poems and how they express their connections with nature.
Every known poem no matter how many lines or how complex the words are, cannot be interpreted in one particular manner. Based on personal experiences we are able to decipher poems in unique ways. “The Haunted Palace” by Poe and “Fire and Ice” by Frost, have various interpretations that can be used in regards to politics, physical Interaction, or philosophical meanings, but the main idea these poems use is towards the environment. These poems link the description of the environment to human experiences by adding certain elements such as, “Radiant palace-reared its ugly head” (4) and “But if it had to perish twice” (5) in order to hint the readers that the poem has a connection to human behavior.
When humans and nature come together, they either coexist harmoniously because nature's inhabitants and humans share a mutual respect and understanding for each other, or they clash because humans attempt to control and force their ways of life on nature. The poems, "The Bull Moose" by Alden Nowlan, "The Panther" by Rainer Maria Rilke, "Walking the Dog" by Howard Nemerov, and "The Fish" by Elizabeth Bishop, describe what happens when humans and nature come together. I believe that when humans and nature come together they either clash and conflict because individuals destroy and attempt to control nature, which is a reflection of their powerful need to control themselves, or humans live peacefully with nature because not only do they
