As an early childhood education professional it is important to understand obstacles and make a plan to overcome those obstacles. In my current position as an owner operator of a family daycare program. I have taken a variety of the common checklists combined them together into my own form adding a section to make my own notes. This overcomes a variety of the challenges that come with using checklists assessments. It is also important to write exactly what the child/ren are doing in order to not add personal bias. I also make sure to review the information prior to sharing with parents or making individualized planning.
Chapter two discusses various theorists that helped to mold and shape early childhood education to where it is today. There are several different theorists that contributed to the development of early childhood education. Some of these theorists include Alfred Adler, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, and John Dewey. Each theorist developed a unique theory that has caused early childhood guidance and education to flourish like it has today. Without learning and building on these theories, early childhood guidance and education would never develop or change. The chapter explains how some theories may seem strange to the contemporary families, but these theories are the foundation of how early childhood education got to where it is today. The book goes
A/c 1.2 The benefit of using a child centred model of assessment and planning is that you concentrate on the person and their specific and individual set of needs and circumstances. A child centred model promotes the rights of the child and allows them to communicate and say what they want for themselves. When children are moved to make the correct choice and take a lead using this type of assessment they tend to succeed as they develop their needs. Children and young people’s needs can be identified through observation and the sharing of information between those that are involved in the care of the young people or children. The parents and class teachers are the best places to identify individual needs because the young people spend more time at school and home than they do anywhere else. This research report presents an analysis of and conclusions drawn from the experiences and perspectives of two educators that work in the early childhood setting. I choose to interview Mary from the Fresno City College child development center. Mary works with toddlers who are 2 years of age. While observing Mary with her students, I notice she was well organized and very attentive to her students, and they seem to respond very well to her. I also noticed that Mary has a lot of patients with her students and they love her. I also noticed while observing Mary, that she seems to deal each of the students differently according to what needs that need to be met and how each of the students learning is different. Mary is well organized and has a strategic schedule that she goes by.
A checklist can be used either on a regular basis or as and when difficult issues have been dealt with. This checklist can be used to monitor approach, effect the approach had. An honest assessment requires honest reflection.

“It all started in 1991 with a young girl in a yellow dress. She looked a bit sad, a bit lonely, a bit out of place. As Chief of Police Bill Hegarty walked through the Grand Rapids Police Department that day, the little girl caught his eye. And as he looked at her, he saw that she simply looked out of place. He saw that she looked scared” (Children’s Assessment Center, n.d.). About twenty years ago the Children’s Assessment Center of Grand Rapids opened their doors with the intention to reduce the amount of trauma children endured in the case of sexual assault. The Children’s Assessment Center is a place where children can be interviewed without being scared and can receive the treatment they need to heal from their abuse. “Traditionally, child forensic interviews have taken place in police departments, schools, and CPS offices. Such settings may be intimidating for children and could increase children 's beliefs that they are in trouble or have done something wrong” (Tavkar, 2007).
The 1980s brought a new reform movement in education, accompanied by a new emphasis on testing. The effort to improve education at all levels included the use of standardized tests to provide accountability for what students are learning. Minimum competency tests, achievement tests, and screening instruments were used to ensure that students from preschool through college reached the desired educational goals and achieved the minimum standards of education that were established locally or by the state education agency. As we continue in a new century, these concerns have increased.
Thesis Statement: Early childhood education has many benefits and there is the potential for many significant outcomes if universal preschools were put into place.
I already learned the basics of observing and making a narrative report of the observations made. This subject disciplined me in making the task properly and passing it on time. I thought, observing children would be a hard job to do but I was wrong. It was really interesting and fun because I witnessed unusual behaviors and happy faces from children I've encountered that really motivated me to do my very best to pursue my goals and achieve what I really wanted to do and that is to really become a Special Education teacher. Honestly, I never thought of using checklists in assessing and observing individuals because I thought it would only be written observation with no basis.
