In the article “What it Means to Be Creative” S.I. Hayakawa presents many different criteria it takes to be creative. Vincent Van Gogh, a famous painter, displays several of Hayakawa’s characteristics of a creative person. Van Gogh produced numerous influential paintings that required a great amount of creativity. Van Gogh suffered from psychotic problems, but this did not impact his work ethic or creativity. These issues may have helped produce ideas for his masterpieces. I believe Van Gogh can be considered a creative person because he had a distinct view of the world, he was uniquely in touch with his emotions, and he had to cope with loneliness throughout his life.
Hayakawa states a creative person “is not limited in his thinking to ‘what everyone else knows’” (167). As a painter, Vincent Van Gogh was forced to see things differently from others and he had to find a way to portray his ideas on canvas. Displaying one’s ideas on a piece of canvas is a very difficult task for all painters. In a letter to his brother, Theo, Van Gogh explains his attempts “to express the love of two lovers by a marriage of two complementary colours, their mingling and their opposition, the mysterious vibrations of kindred tones.”(Van Gogh 531). In this letter, he explains how he tried to show the love of two humans through the relationship that two colors have with each other. Love is a difficult emotion to describe with words yet Van Gogh manages to describe love using paint. He used his
Vincent van Gogh mentions how one will not find trompe l’oeil in his paintings because he did not have any type of technique when it came to painting. Van Gogh tries to capture the essence in the drawing because he is always working directly on the spot. He wanted to rid people of their preconceived ideas of technique and surprise them with his irregular strokes and roughness. When he describes the painting of the asylum garden he focuses on the colors. He compares the colors to different emotions, for example he says that the colors red ochre, green, grey, and black heighten a sense of anxiety that his companions often suffer from. Van Gogh also describes another painting of a field with colors of lilac, green, yellow, and a bright white sun
While the painters after the Impressionism period were collectively called the “Post-Impressionists,” the label is quite reductive. Each artist had their own unique style, from Seurat’s pointillism to Signac’s mosaic-like divisionism, Cezanne, Émile Bernard, and others. These artists were all connected in that they were reacting to the aesthetics of Impressionism. Two of the more influential painters from this movement were Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, who aimed to connect with viewers on a deeper level by access Nature’s mystery and meaning beyond its superficial, observable level. However, each artist’s approach to achieving this goal was different. In close examination of Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait (Dedicated to Paul Gauguin) and Paul Gauguin’s Self-Portrait with Portrait of Émile Bernard (Les misérables), one may clearly see the two artists’ contrasting styles on display.
In my research / readings of my chosen Artist, I found a lot of information about them that I will descibe individually. Based on the biography, It has been stated that Vincent “was a most well known post-impressionism Artist, for whom color was the chief symbol of expression, he was highly emotional, lacked self-confidence and struggled with his identity and with direction.” (Templeton Reid) In the late 1800’s is when Vincent basically made the decision to become an Artist, in which he wanted to provide some type of Happiness because he was able to create beauty (Templeton Reid). As you review the art chosen above by Vincent Van Gogh, you will notice the colors used were dark i.e. Greens, Oranges, Blues, with splashes of yellow to create the sun, which led me to believe that maybe this was when he was in the dark place of his life. In the Van Gogh painting, I see big trees with the nice bright sun shining over the blue water, while looking at the trees it makes me feel safe because of the openness of the surrounding space, also the brightness of the sun and the coolness of the water makes me calm and relaxed, it’s just something about being in nature that gives me a sense of peace and direction, nothing to distract or disturb me.
Vincent van Gogh was Dutch post-impressionistic painter who ended up own life by own hand. His paintings are notable for its power of touch in painting, colour and emotion. By picking up some words from his life that influenced his mind and painting style, were “religion”, “Paul Gauguin” and “Japonism”. (Brooks, 2016) (Vangoghmuseum.nl, n.d.). Also those words are related to the turning points of his life as well.
“Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin drew their inspiration from emotions. Van Gogh declared that "instead of trying to reproduce what I have before my eyes I use color more arbitrarily in order to express myself forcibly," whereas Gauguin advised a fellow painter: "Go on working, freely and furiously, you will make progress.... A strong emotion can be translated immediately” (Maurice Malingue qtd. in Galenson and Weinberg_2).
Vincent Van Gogh, the artist remembered today for his wonderful paintings. Paintings remembered today by many. His most famous ones are known as: Starry Night, Starry Night over the Rhone, Almond Blossoms, His self- portrait, Eiffel Tower from across the Seine, and Road with Cypress and Star. How did he acquire that taste for art? And what about his personal life?
Arguably no other artist has captured people's imaginations like Vincent van Gogh. “Vincent van Gogh’s passion, contemplation of life, nature, art, his intensity, his mental illnesses, and his suicide at thirty-seven have all contributed to the powerful myths and love for the estranged artist” (Callow). It is hard to believe that such a beloved painter of today’s society lived such, a short and tortured life. At a young age things, did not start out too well for Vincent. He did not have a very good childhood, and went through many failures in life before he finally found he had an enjoyment for painting. He did not find out that he had a love for painting until he was about twenty-seven years old. Even when he discovered that his calling
“The process starts out in an incredibly open way with endless possibilities; the addition of each plane of colour, however, progressively limits the work’s evolution and, ultimately, when a painting ‘works’, it coalesces into a composition that is intuitive and carefully controlled.” GS
Vincent Van Gogh has had a profound effect on the world through his art. In the short span of 10 years Van Gogh produced over 2,000 drawings and paintings. Van Gogh encouraged different types of thinking with his art by showing strong emotion and using his talent to express himself. Van Gogh was a tortured soul who used art as an escape from his unsatisfactory life, all we see today is his genius artwork, This paper will give you insight into Van Gogh’s life, once we have stepped in his shoes we will be able to see the depths of his depravity.
To many Van Gogh is a household name, and an iconic tortured artist. Van Gough’s commitment to the spirituality with in man and nature led to his unique style and content that led to dramatic and emotional canvases, canvases that convey much more than just a subject.
The flow of the white brushstrokes in the sky seems to give the painting its feel of
Several aspects and themes turned out to be vivid in his works. For instance, vibrant colors through the use of diverse brush strokes proved Van Gogh’s work to be unique in terms of master and perfection of the technique. This aspect has also been quite evident as it has strongly influenced modern forms of art work. In the same manner, emotions and expressions have also been seen among his works as brought out by the colors (Desborde and Kimball
I found it highly enjoyable to explore the unique artwork that the RISD Museum put on display. Many art museums I have visited in the past, only sees to show drawings, paintings, or maybe photographs. I thought it was neat that this museum expanded their artwork to kitchenware, furniture, and architectural pieces as well. Although there were so many art pieces I appreciated, I especially took interest in the Auvers-Sur-Oise by Vincent van Gogh.
In Art Appreciation on the first week, we watched a video that showed multiple pieces of artwork from Vincent Van Gogh, and it played the song “Vincent” by Don Mclean. This presentation was interesting, and obviously deep. The song seems to be describing Vincent’s life and motives as an artist. The song and display of art made me feel tranquil, or calm and relaxed. I liked the lyrics to the song, but what I find most interesting is how the progress between the different self portraits of Vincent is apparent.
