The Impact of Vanity in Today’s Society Since the beginning of time,vanity, one of the seven deadly sins plagued society. The Bible illustrates this through the tales of tragic horrors of vanity by people who are excessively conceited and overly proud of their appearance, qualities, and achievements. This recurrent theme of boastful pride, encompassing oneself has become an even more common theme in today’s society. From endless, painful plastic surgery to never ending hours spent taking and photo-shopping selfies to post just to acquire more likes and followers, it is hard to pinpoint where major populations of society went astray, consumed with themselves instead of others, but vanity is an issue that affects us all. From larger breasts and buttococks, face lifts, and tummy tucks, thousands of dollars are spent, to try to achieve perfection, yet they are never satisfied. Commercials sell what they claim to be the new wonder drug, from creams to pills, people will take and pay anything. Cures for wrinkles, hair loss, blemishes, lack of muscle, body fat, greying hair, and any and all skin imperfections, are just some of the thousands of products people drop endless amounts of money in hopes to obtain their own magical before and after. Images of models and famous people plague young people’s minds promoting an unattainable image. The more rediful internet access has only exacerbated this issue and caused increasingly more people to feel inadequate in their own self image, therefore becoming vaniful to strive towards something nonexistent. Contributing to society’s drastic turn towards vanity is the rise of social media. Hollywood promotes an impossible standard that many strive towards. Photoshopped magazine covers depict women as thin and fit, and men as muscular and overly masculine. Over the past few years, strives have been made to reverse this image, and become more body inclusive. However, the psychological effects of these lasting images can not be simply changed by a few more inclusive advertisements. People, especially young women who are exposed to negative body images
