I believe that video games do not contribute as much as they have the potential to in the American Society. So in simpler terms, no. I do not think they contribute positively to American Society. If anything they could contribute negatively, as of now.
Violent games could lead to children becoming more violent and thinking that violence in general is okay. This would be called "desensitizing". Desensitizing in this instance is defined as "make (someone) less likely to feel shock or distress at scenes of cruelty, violence, or suffering by overexposure to such images". I did a project in this class about if violent video games have the ability to desensitize children, and I believe that they can desensitize children, but not all. It depends on the child. "The research demonstrates a consistent relation between violent video game use and increases in aggressive behavior, aggressive cognitions and aggressive affect, and decreases in prosocial behavior, empathy and sensitivity to aggression.” -American Psychological Association
But I do believe that in the future, video games have the

This shows that video games, even violent ones can help a person out later in life.
There is already smaller video games that are used to help smaller children develop their elementary school learning. They do simple questions on their game, and are getting rewarded for doing so.
Overall, I think video games do not contribute to society as of now, but in the future, they could definitely help influence a positive effect on the American Society. Violent video games are currently viewed as a bad influence, but eventually they could be seen as a good thing when they can be used for
Reading this essay has caused me to do more research on this specific topic and the things I have found are disturbing. Video games change your mind set, your way of thinking and can affect you for the rest of your life, so when it comes to the violent video games we are turning into a more violent society. It has been studied that playing video games can affect your dreams, and your dreams affect how you feel and treat people, it’s a never ending circle. Through playing video games we are spending less and less time with one another and I think it’s a crying shame. We as a society are naturally social people and the fact that with our recent technology we have become more and more independent.
The sociological interpretations of video games are almost as numerous as the games themselves, and like many aspects of our society can be harmful or beneficial depending on how they are utilized by an
There are many things that today’s society worries about; television, role models, etc. The biggest ones are those that affect the children. One that many people overlook is video games, a national past time in almost every home. It is clear that they can cause changes in children, but are the changes good or bad? Do video games have a negative effect on kids?
Besides the violent contents, video games have several positive aspects. Video games can push children's
Video games help players to have a safe and healthy escape from reality. Players feel that playing video games give players a safe outlet for angry feelings. In fact, an increase in the consumption of violent video games has been associated with a decline in youth violence (Ferguson “Are Violent Video Games Really to Blame?”). This is due to the fact that video games help to fulfill the human desire for competition, especially games that center around their multiplayer modes (Marcovitz 15). Video games also give players a powerful sense of control over their situation,
“Violent video games increase aggressive thoughts, angry feelings, and aggressive behaviors and decrease empathic feelings and prosocial behaviors” (Gregory Ferenstein). Gaming devices not only desensitize us, but it heightens our chances of going out and committing acts of violence. Such as, James Holmes because of the games that he played (Call of Duty, Advanced Warfare and etc.) he believed that for every person he killed; he would receive a point for doing so. “There are definitely games kids shouldn't be playing, she said, for example those where hunting down and killing people is the goal)” (Anne Harding, CNN). After playing these games, many kids feel as if the real world is like a game and killing people to earn points is rewarded. Video games have changed our America to believing that death and violence should be rewarded, but with a twist and that includes handcuffs and a prison
The argument of video games having a possitive or negative affect on America's youth has been around for several years. While many claim video games are enhancing the lives of children I disagree.
Video games are played by over 1.2 billion people. Video games have had an impact on the culture that we live in today. There are video games that can help educate the kids, and there are games that are used for entertainment. There is a problem though, that problem is that a lot of people think video games cause kids to commit crimes. Video games do not cause kids to commit criminal behavior.
Video games have been argued about for decades. Some people have argued that video games are linked to violence. However, new research shows that video games can be used for therapeutic purposes, exercise, stress relievers, positive interactive learning, hand eye coordination, and different types of patient treatment for people all around the world.
I mean gaming has evolved over the years from an eight bit Pac-Man to a 3-D Mario kart. We just need to do is make less violent video games, maybe even random ideas like a flamingo dancer catching kittens falling from the sky. Or look at the Nintendo world championship game these gamers have come from a longer from a long time with gaming with lots of experience over the years. Also gaming can create friendships like when I was playing animal jam I met this person in on animal jam when I was at home and it turns out he went to my school and we were friends and kept in close touch. It can also improve real Life skills like dancing Just Dance can help you be a better dancer and it's also a great workout. Also video games can bring emotion when you're playing a game one of a virtual companions ran away and you are very
Video game makers have even advanced video games to give you the fell of using real weapons, also called virtual reality. There is a professor at the University of Missouri says that violent video games change behavior. First person shooter games help team players how to hurt people because first person shooter games are usually more realistic. Sixty percent sixth to eighth grade boys who play m-rated video games have hit or beat up somebody. Many people who have acted in mass shootings played violent video games. Violent video games have the tendency to lower people's empathy and they also lower people’s kindness. The APA says violent video games will risk the factor for aggression. When violent video games reward a player for violence, kids think violence is a good thing because they learn that you get rewards for committing violent acts. Sixty-seven percent of parents even agree that violent video games do lead to aggression.
Are video games harmful? Are they poisoning society and corrupting the minds of the youth? The evidence would certainly make it seem that way, but what are the real effects that video games have on people? Video games have been the subject of controversy ever since their creation. Yes that’s right, ever since the creation of Pong, video games have been a concern. In fact C. Everett Koop stated that “There is nothing constructive in the games. Everything is eliminate, kill, destroy and do it fast” (Marcovitz 12). As video games grow more and more like real life concern grows as well. However, as video games grow, they also grow in providing a safe outlet for negative emotions, teaching player’s life lessons, and any research
Video games are frowned upon by parents as time-wasters, and worse, some education experts think that these games corrupt the brain. Violent video games are easily blamed by the media and some experts as the reason why some young people become violent or commit extreme anti-social behavior. But many scientists and psychologists find that video games can actually have many benefits – the main one is making kids smart. Video games may actually teach kids high-level thinking skills that they will need in the future.
Now, we are able to see that playing video games can be beneficial for people of all ages. However, as Chimamanda Adichie emphasized in her TED Talk, it is important to consider and examine all of the other perspectives. So, yes, it can be established that games can be beneficial, but we must understand that the type of game being played is a big part of it. Generalizing all games into one category would be a mistake. There are many different types/genres of games: puzzles, shooters, role-playing, multiplayer online, sports, educational, etc. Each genre come with its own benefits. As previously established, educational games can be very helpful in a school environment, but other types of games such as shooters probably won't work too well. In fact, an American Psychological Association, APA, review was able to confirm the common idea that there is a link between violent video games and aggression (“APA Review”). Violent video games might not be the main driving force behind aggression, but they seem to be a factor in it. Patankar, having played competitive shooters and fighting games, didn't take this into account with his evaluation of gaming. On the flip side of the coin, though, a scientific review found that playing video games, including violent shooters, may be able to improve a child's learning, social skills, and cognitive skills. The APA writes, “A 2013 meta-analysis found that playing shooter video games improved a player's capacity to think about objects in three
Many gamers would argue that videogames have a positive impact on their lives and minds. They would be correct in saying that games do indeed change the way people think, but games go beyond that point, “studies indicate that playing video games not only changes how our brains
