The “Somewhere in America #Mipsterz” video is a video posted on YouTube highlighting trendy, fashionable, hijabi Muslim women. This video sparked controversy within the Muslim community for various reasons, ranging from the women’s clothing, actions, and the hip-hop music the video was set to. This is evidenced by the many articles written and posted online in response to it. Some of these articles include Sana Saaed’s “Somewhere in America, Muslim Women Are ‘Cool’”, Rabia Chaudry’s “Somewhere on the Internet, Muslim Women are being Shamed”, Aminah Sheikh’s “Why I Participated in the ‘Somewhere in America’ #Mipsterz Video”, and Yasmine Hafiz’s “Why Islam Needs More ‘Mipsterz’”. These articles cover the topic very well and offer the main …show more content…
They each talk about diversity within Islam and point out that there are many ways to be a Muslim, so it is unfair to judge these women based on their opinion of how Muslim women should present themselves in public.
Rabia Chaudry, in her “Somewhere on the Internet, Muslim Women are being Shamed” article, disagrees with Sana’s article and doesn’t see how the “#Mipsterz” video is harmful to Muslim culture. She feels that these young Muslim women are being overanalyzed and “brutally examined” to the point that it’s promoting the downfall of the Muslim community. While Sana, in her “Somewhere in America, Muslim Women Are ‘Cool”’ article, essentially states that obsessing over trying to appear more American is awful, Rabia Chaudry states that it’s awful for people to accuse them of being too American. She feels that there is currently a big problem within the Muslim community: that it is acceptable to publicly humiliate Muslim girls whenever it could be judged that they are not following Islam correctly. She encourages these women to stay proud Muslims even though other Muslims are shaming them.
Aminah Sheikh’s article, “Why I Participated in the ‘Somewhere in America’ #Mipsterz Video”, is especially worth noting because it is a firsthand account of what it was like being a part of this controversial video. Overall, Aminah had an overwhelmingly positive experience. She felt comfortable

There are many political, religious, and cultural factors that shape the lives of Islamic women many of them are completely different than factors in the lives of American women. Islam is one of the world’s fastest growing religions; however, Brooks argues that “Islam’s holiest texts have been misused to justify the repression of women, and how male pride and power have warped the original message of this once liberating faith.” The book also shows these factors have slowly been taking away women’s rights, rather than furthering them.
Yet inequalities may not be the case for women in more westernized nations as they receive greater freedom (60). This is where the great diversity between modernist Muslim’s and conservative Muslim’s come in. Modernist Muslims argue genuine Islam is compatible with modern west society and political ideas such as democracy and the equality of women. The views of women in society are supported by revelations of the prophet Mohammed. On the other hand we have conservative Muslims where they believe in
The author, Naheed Mustafa, starts out with two points of view others have of her, a “Muslim terrorist” or an oppressed woman (Mustafa 1). However, with these two points of view, Mustafa is suggesting that people only view her in these two ways because in their eyes a Muslim woman cannot be more. Then she introduces the hijab, a scarf which covers her neck, head, and throat, but explains that young Muslim women like her are “reinterpreting” the purpose of the hijab: give women absolute control over their bodies. According to Mustafa, the hijab does not only give women absolute control but freedom. Yet, others do not understand this concept or why a young woman who was born in a land that is free and full of opportunities like North America
Cromwell was at the height of power, religious success and continued to have a tight hold on his master King Henry VIII. After the death of Henry’s third wife Jane Seymour, Cromwell advised a new political marriage for the king. To pursue his own advantage and build Protestant connections in Europe, Cromwell suggested the king take a German bride. This would also aid Cromwell against anti-Cromwell factions and nobilities, due to the potential bride being an outsider rather than English noblewomen. Cromwell finally found success in the Duke of Cleves sister Anne. Henry, eager to marry once again, sent his artist to paint her portrait, determined to have a beautiful wife. Henry received her portrait and approved of the young Anne of Cleves, she soon set sail for England, an enormous accomplishment for Cromwell’s domestic and foreign policy. Henry titled Cromwell earl of Essex on 18
The latest hot topic when it comes to the Republican candidates for the presidential election is Muslims. From Donald Trump saying we have a “Muslim problem”, to Ben Carson saying Muslims are unfit for office, the attack on Muslims has been a big subject. In this New York Times editorial “The Republican Attack on Muslims”, the author talks about how recently the Republicans were not the nicest when it comes to the Muslim community. Recently, Donald Trump has hinted towards his dislike for Muslims. In a recent interview, the interviewer stated that “we have a problem in this country, it’s called Muslims”, and that our President (who is an American-born Christian) is also a Muslim. When the interviewer asked Mr. Trump when we would get rid of them, he said “We’re going to be looking into that.” Donald Trump has also stated that he thinks Muslims were behind the World Trade Center attacks, which is not true.
Ever since September 11, 2001 Americans along with the majority of the world’s population have been skeptical of Muslims. It’s a sad reality but it’s hard for people to think of a Muslim without linking them directly to terrorism. But these assumptions aren’t totally out of the blue—the Muslim’s religion, Islam, teaches a low tolerance for other religions and the Islamic government has no separation of church and state, so it’s only normal to assume that their government shall have a low tolerance as well—some however, immediately translate this into terrorism. Through the Islamic government and religion, relations with foreign countries, and separation amongst themselves it can be concluded that Islamic Fundamentalism is clearly a threat
Hurricane Katrina pounded the Gulf Coast with tremendous force at daybreak, August 29, 2005, severely punishing regions that included the city of New Orleans and its neighboring state Mississippi. Resulting in a total of just over 1700 people killed, and hundreds of thousands missing. When we think of Hurricane Katrina stories, we think of stories that were published by the media such as, “Packing 145-mile-an-hour winds as it made landfall, the category 3 storm left more than a million people in three states without power and submerged highways even hundreds of miles from its center. The hurricane's storm surge a 29-foot wall of water pushed ashore when the hurricane struck the Gulf Coast was the highest ever measured in the United States.
Islam is portrayed and is commonly accepted as the most violent and largest direct threat to the West. This is a generalization made by most of the West, but it is not particularly the West or the Islamic people’s fault. There is constant turmoil in Islamic countries in the Middle East and these conflicts are what make the news in the West. The only representation in the media that the Islamic nation gets is that of war. Though most Islamic people are not violent, the select few that do participate in terrorist groups give the rest of the Islam nation a bad image.
Stereotypes often determine how we see people who are different from us. Stereotypes play such an important role in our perceptions of others, but what exactly are they? A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing (Williams, 2013). In essence, stereotypes are not limited to different races and ethnicities, but also include: genders, social classes, cultures and even certain hobbies. In light of the increase of negative attention that Muslims have been receiving in the media, the stereotypes discussed in this paper will be centered on Muslims. Specifically, the stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists will be analyzed.
A Farewell to Arms is acclaimed author Ernest Hemingway’s second standalone novel, published in 1929. The novel is set on the battlefront of World War I and tells the tragic love story of Frederic Henry, an American ambulance driver in the Italian army, and Catherine Barkley, a grieving British nurse. Joel Armstrong’s article, “‘A Powerful Beacon’: Love Illuminating Human Attachment in Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms”, provides an in-depth analysis of the use of love throughout the novel, supported by the views of philosophers as well as Hemingway himself. Armstrong uses these viewpoints to determine what type of love story A Farewell to Arms is. In the end, Armstrong states that the love between Henry and Barkley is so complex and impacted by other variables that it defies all other love stories and forces readers to “re-evaluate, head on, the question of love”(Armstrong 81). Armstrong’s position on A Farewell to Arms is supported by Henry’s change throughout the novel, the impact of war on Henry and Barkley’s relationship, and Catherine’s unexpected and sudden death.
It was noticeable that Kuwaiti women in the media were attacked by some Islamic groups. Kuwaiti women who wear the hijab didn’t dare to study any subject related to media.
For all of them the decision was a deeply personal one rooting deep in their religious beliefs. Many of them see it as a duty of theirs to show Islam in a positive light. With all the misconceptions about these women, this group of six all saw it as an opportunity to teach people about their culture. They squash the misunderstandings that Muslim women aren’t supposed to talk and clearly prove that Muslim women are allowed to be educated and have their own thoughts and views. In addition to that they feel they are the ones that need to show and express the kindness and love of Islam (Seggie and Sanford 2010).
Islam: suppressor of women, enemy of Western nations, and breeder of terrorists. The West has many stereotypes and misconceptions about Islam that are due to the media, prejudice, and ignorance. Islam is often seen as an "extremist" or "terrorist" religion. Often, the media's reports about Islam are incorrect due to ignorance or not wanting to acknowledge its true teachings. This is one of the reasons why Westerners are often wary of Muslims. In contrast to what the media portrays, Islam is a peaceful religion, which does not promote violence or terrorism.
For my paper I decided to choose the religion of Islam. I decided to pick this religion because of its fast growing rate. It is also different from what I am used to growing up with, so I was interested in learning more. I had learned some basic facts after the 9/11 event, but the Muslim religion and culture was still a mystery to me. Picking this topic has helped me learn more about Muslims and will help me better relate to them in my future work.
