The Wild and Lively Image The Rocks in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is an oil on canvas by Vincent Van Gogh. It was painted in 1888. It depicts a specific area in the South of France called Montmajour, a rocky terrain located a few miles north of the city of Arles. The curving, swirling brushwork used to capture the sky and grass, sets the lively image of the landscape. The contrasting use of the blues of the trees, and the sky sets the freshness of the place. Vincent Van Gogh was able to create a lively image from his great use of color, lines and brushwork. Van Gogh’s passion and contemplation of life, nature, and art is well represented in The Rocks. His delicate post—Impressionism innovation led him to the radical use of unnatural
While the painters after the Impressionism period were collectively called the “Post-Impressionists,” the label is quite reductive. Each artist had their own unique style, from Seurat’s pointillism to Signac’s mosaic-like divisionism, Cezanne, Émile Bernard, and others. These artists were all connected in that they were reacting to the aesthetics of Impressionism. Two of the more influential painters from this movement were Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, who aimed to connect with viewers on a deeper level by access Nature’s mystery and meaning beyond its superficial, observable level. However, each artist’s approach to achieving this goal was different. In close examination of Vincent van Gogh’s Self-Portrait (Dedicated to Paul Gauguin) and Paul Gauguin’s Self-Portrait with Portrait of Émile Bernard (Les misérables), one may clearly see the two artists’ contrasting styles on display.
I have chosen Romanticism/ Post Impressionism, Olive Trees with yellow sky and sun, by Vincent Van Gogh; The Oxbow, by Thomas Cole, comparing it to the “Spirit Rising, by Christophe Vacher”.
Vincent Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 at the Zundart Netherlands. Vincent Van Gogh was a post impressionist. Van Gogh's paintings stand out from other artists of his time. The colors he used most were lemon yellow and blue. His self-portraits are wet with blue background, coat, and eyes, and with a yellow face, beard, and hair. Stars and books, which were his passion, were painted yellow.
Vincent Van Gogh did not become famous until after his death at the age of 37 in July of 1890. He was born in March of 1853. Van Gogh would be known as a troublesome boy who kept to himself and went on long walks through the country side. His mother Anna Cornelia Carbentus and Father Theodorus (Dorus) Van Gogh struggled to understand their eldest son, this constant struggle would shape their relationship and Van Gogh’s life for years to come.
The oil on canvas landscape painting does not reveal the name of the painter, but instead it leaves the observer with several explicit and implicit clues which may lead the viewer a step closer to its creator and its reason for existing. Additionally knowing that the painting was created in France sometime around the mid 17th century narrows it down to a few possible influencing eras. Moreover, having the freedom as a spectator to make assumptions based on legitimate evidence lead me to think critically and got me to figure out the painter’s background information, intended audience, intentions, and etc.
Around 1890, an artist by the name of Vincent Van Gogh who present day is one of the most renowned artists created magnificent, yet mysterious drawings which he started with just a pencil. From his pencil drawings with lines and dashes to the beautiful variations with using paint, Vincent was a genius, but was never congratulated on his work until later. Even as he was pronounced crazy, he could still create beautiful works of art which shows how even a flower can bloom in a dark forest. As his life was slowly being painted on canvas from the years of solitude and psychiatric problems he finally killed himself which a couple years later brought up his artwork through his own suicide.
Vincent Van Gogh Madison Dunham You’re going insane. Eating paint as if it is food because you spent your weekly earnings on new art supplies without the thought of food. It drives you crazy, but you keep on painting. Almost 900 paintings before you commit suicide and only manage to sell 1.
Vincent Willem Van Gogh was a Dutchman born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. The Starry Night is one of Van Gogh’s famous paintings in the world. It was believed that his painting was the view from his bedroom window. After a petition was signed saying Vincent Van Gogh was dangerous, they moved him to an asylum. He lived in a hospital where he suffered occasional relapse into delusions. While he was there, he was able to read, paint and withdraw from his room. As he was going through depression, Van Gogh then began to have hallucinations and even have thoughts of suicide. His art helped him stay emotionally balanced. He then started to paint The Starry Night, and used dark colors. For example, in the painting he clearly paints all the buildings dark and black and paints the stars and the moon brighter to make it stand out more. In his painting, he included a cypress tree which is usually found in cemeteries and represent mourning. There were rumors about his death, saying he had died because his illness
As odd as it sounds, Vincent was born exactly one year after his mother’s stillborn, also named Vincent. One thing that saddened van Gogh was seeing his deceased brother’s headstone with his name and birthdate already engraved into it.
Camille Pissarro’s paining, ‘The Goose Girl at Montfoucalt, White Frost’ painted in 1875 and Vincent VanGogh’s painting, ‘The Rocks’, painted in 1888, both represent the quintessential Impressionistic styles that were prominent during the time period that they were curated. Both paintings, which were created using the same medium, oil on canvas, reflect many of the philosophical tenets and principles that were commonly identified in Impressionistic paintings during this time period. However, the despite the similarities that are inherent in the two works of art, there are also a number of stylistic differences that separated the two. A closer examination reveals that there were subtle differences in nearly every facet of the two paintings,
A great artist once wrote, “If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced”. This artist was Vincent van Gogh, soon to be an appraised artist known all around the world for his works, such as Starry Night. He is one of the very first artists of the post-impressionist style than is now adored in every continent. However, there is much more to the man than one painting. Creating a full timeline that stretches beyond Gogh’s life, this paper will discuss the life of Vincent van Gogh and the impression he made on the world.
This formal art analysis will provide a foundation for a commissioned work of art through the context of the self-portrait. In Vincent Van Gogh's : "Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat” (1887), I found a late 19th century style of the post-impressionist painter, which reveals an experimental aspect of Van Gogh’s style in an era when pointillism was the vogue in Paris. In this manner, Van Gogh’s intention for this painting was to experiment with short brush strokes and coloration to achieve a bright form of rural portraiture. Van Gogh is wearing a straw hat that expresses a rural feelings in the French countryside, which intends to show a more cheerful and archaic pastoral feeling during the summer: “Here the straw hat provides a sign and a symbol: a sign of summer” (Van Gogh “Van Gogh in Arles”, 1984, p.35). This bright vision of sunshine in the summer months expresses a positive and hopeful feeling, since Van
Artists tend to craft their skill to the norms around them. Whether it is a similar theme, style, or social issue artists attempt to address, art interconnects. Three artists Jacob van Ruisdael, Claude Monet, and Paul Signac draft analogous images but with different techniques and styles. Although the three artists show the relationship of human interaction in nature by incorporating buildings, the composition and spatial arrangement of objects differ. The styles in the three paintings reveal drastic differences as Ruisdael’s realistic depiction in Bleaching Grounds Near Haarlem doesn’t compare to the dotted and blurry landscapes of both Monet’s Valle Buona and Signac’s pointillism in Comblat-le Chateau. Both artists as they both hint sense
Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most recognized artists in the world. Van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853 in Groot-Zundert, Netherlands. Van Gogh was born into a family of six children in which his father was a pastor and his mother was an artist. He was named after his stillborn brother who died exactly one year before he was born.
One of Vincent Van Gogh’s most world renowned paintings is his landscape oil painting Starry Night. The painting displays a small town underneath an unusual yet still extremely beautiful night sky. In this night sky, Van Gogh utilizes an array of colors that blend well together in order to enhance the sky as a whole. The town is clearly a small one due to the amount of buildings that are present in the painting itself. In this small town most of the buildings have lights on which symbolize life in a community. Another visual in Starry Night is the mountain like figures that appear in the background of the illustrious painting. Several things contribute to the beauty of Van Gogh’s painting which are the painting’s function, context, style, and design. Van Gogh’s utilization of these elements help bring further emphasis to his work in Starry Night.
