Virginia Henderson: Nursing Theory Virginia Henderson gave a fundamental knowledge for nursing students today with her theory of nursing care. It gave students a clear definition of what nursing should look like, mostly focused on patient care. The basic approach is essential for all health care workers and is a vital learning tool for all nursing students. Henderson not only gave a principal definition of nursing but also provided fourteen primary activities that the patient should achieve. In this essay, I will consider Henderson’s life, her nursing theory and go through the fourteen activities of patient care. I will also discuss how her theory can be applicable in modern nursing. Virginia Henderson was born on November 30, 1897 (Knollmueller, 1996). She graduated from the Army Nursing School at Walter Reed Hospital in 1921. (Knollmueller, 1996). Henderson then went to Columbia Teacher’s Collage and became one of the first graduates of advance education (Fulton, 1987). With all her work done in nursing education she can be called the “first lady of nursing” (Nicely, 2011, p. 72). Her method includes fourteen activities that nurses should help the patient achieve. This theory was in her work “The Nature of Nursing” which was first published in 1964 in the American Journal of Nursing. This theory is considered to be a needs theory.
