After spending time with her elderly relative, the girl sees that the worst thing you could do to another person “is to make them feel as if they are worth nothing” (Ortiz 3). This ordeal causes her to learn that what she says and how she behaves could be hurtful and upsetting to others. Because of this event, Connie would most likely become more thoughtful of them. In addition, the teen starts “to consider a number [she] hadn’t thought much about” (Ortiz 3) and begins to understand Abuela better. The girl feels terrible and sorry since she had made her grandmother feel like she was worthless. Zero becomes a more significant number to her life, and she realizes that she should not act towards others like she had. At such a tender age, this little girl is having these thoughts about her mother not loving her demonstrates she would receive little or no love from her family. In fact, Sonia turned to receiving good academics to attempt and please her mom for love in return. This eventually fails, leading to her never getting that love from not just her mom, but the family. Sonia was viewed more as a scapegoat to the house hold then a family member. She was excessively punished for no reason with no trust from none of her family members. If something was occurring in the family for instance, her sister going out late or money missing she would the one to blame and severely punished, “She swore she hadn’t stolen from either Juan or her mother and continued to maintain her innocence even through the beatings she received whenever there was missing money”
Vanessa, still naive, consciously resists the “upright” values of her family and believes she has control of her own identity therefore she, purposely attempts in many early parts of the story, to show ways of opposing her entire family. “I was prepared, for the question was the same each week. I rarely listened in Sunday school, finding
Victoria Roubideaux is a seventeen year old girl, who finds out that she is pregnant. Márquez created the character of Victoria Guzmán to display the power of women, even when they appear to be at the hands of rich and wealthy men. Victoria Guzmán works for the Nasar family as their cook. After Santiago treated Victoria’s daughter, Divina Flor, poorly, Victoria “showed him the bloody knife. “Let go of her, white man,” she ordered” (Márquez 9). Despite the fact that Victoria works for Santiago, she still has the power to order him around, and does not get in trouble for doing so. While Santiago is displayed as a rich, white man who has others cook and clean for him, it is Victoria Guzmán who has the upper hand in their relationship. She even goes as far as to speak to Santiago in a derogatory way, and sees no repercussions for
