Exercise #1 Visual Analysis
TASK 1: ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
1st Element Name: Line
Definition of Element: Has a start point and an end point. They can be of any length, shape or size, and can go in any direction. This photo is an example of the element Line, because every mark on the picture has a beginning and an end, and they are of different sizes, shapes, angles, and are going in different directions.
2nd Element Name: Colour
Definition of Element: Property of light that is visible to the human eye. Colour comes in many different varieties, and brightness. This picture is a great representation of the element Colour, because it shows a lot of the colour spectrum, and there is not one thing in the picture that doesn't have colour.
3rd Element

Space: Cake platforms are located equal distances from each other, not allowing crowding.
The colours of the icing are very neutral with a few lightly saturated decorations and toppings. At first glance, your eye wants to look around the outside of the cakes before the inside to see the different designs before looking at the simply decorated cakes.
ANALYSIS: PRINCIPLES
Variety: Every cake has a different icing or decoration design on them. Only two cakes are similar to each other.
Balance: Asymmetrical. The platforms of the cake are evenly spaced from each other throughout the painting. Front and back row are balanced evenly on either side of the middle row with the same amount of platters.
The elements and principles in this piece function by colour used to emphasis icing design. The light background really allows the variety of cakes to be viewed easily.
Mardi Gras is a big deal mainly because Louisiana is the only state that celebrates it. As always, there is a famous dish that comes along with this holiday and it is King Cake. King Cake is a dessert that is made up of bread, filling, and colorful icing. King Cake was created in the mid-1800s and was made to celebrate the 12th night after Christmas. This dessert represents the coming of the three kings or three wise men (Dave). There are many simple steps to creating a King Cake. After creating the strips of dough for the King Cake, some braids then bakes the strips together which creates the unique look to the dessert. Some people may wonder what makes this thick piece of bread a dessert. Well, after the dough bakes into its unique form, someone splatters icing all over the cake and covers the dough in Mardi Gras colored sprinkles (purple, green and gold). Sometimes King Cakes will be made with different kinds of filling such as, cream cheese, strawberry, apple, or other types. The Mardi Gras colored sprinkles that are on King Cakes symbolize powerful words. Purple stands for justice, green stands for faith, and gold stands for power. The meanings of the colors were created in 1892 during the Rex Parade (Dave). The world’s largest King Cake was baked in 1998 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and it weighed 350 pounds (Dave). There is a secret ingredient that someone inserts in each King Cake and that is
When a beam of sunlight passes through a specially shaped glass object called a prism, the rays of different wavelengths are bent at different angles. The bending breaks up the sunlight into a beautiful band of colors. This band contains all the colors of the rainbow and is called the visible spectrum. At one end of the spectrum, the light appears as violet. It consists of the shortest wavelengths of light that we can see. Farther along the spectrum, the light has increasingly longer wavelengths. It appears as blue, green, yellow, orange, and red, each shading into its neighboring colors in the spectrum. The longest wavelengths of light that we can see appear deep red in color. Some descriptions of the spectrum also mention the color indigo, which is closely related to blue, between violet and blue.
The three pieces are laid out diagonally starting with the photograph at the top right corner, moving on to the middle piece which the arm in the painting is long and smooth and makes the piece flow from the first piece right through to the bottom and then finally finishing at the bottom left with the last piece. Line is one part that makes these pieces particularly work together as the thin lines flow through each piece somewhat connecting the three together. In
The cake to the left of the folk costumes is called “spettekaka.” It is a local dessert consists of eggs, potato flour, and sugar. The batter is poured on a wooden spit, like the one next to the cake indicate that it was prepared for a wedding.
This light is known as the spectrum emission color of an element which can also be used to identify an element as well as determine the energy that is given off. In this lab we used this information to identify three unknown substances and determine if the energy given off was high or low. In order to conduct this lab we had to take a known substance for example Copper Chloride (CuCl) and use a splint to put the substance over a bunsen burner. We then recorded the frequency, color of the flame, and the spectrum emission line by using spectroscopes, which diffracts light.
There are a number of flavors available including Mint Chip, Chocolate Mocha Chip, Birthday Cake, Lemon Cake, Vanilla Bean, Strawberry, and Chocolate. The only place I was able to find all of the flavors was Whole Foods. My local Fred Meyer
This holiday class will take place at Public Works Coffee Bar at 314 South Water Street on November 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In this class, seniors will learn the general rules of making royal icing, piping and ways to add unique decorative touches to their cookies to give them a custom look. The first part of the class will be a discussion session and practicing techniques. The second half of the class will
The piece is pretty balanced, it is more or less partitioned into four parts by the strong horizontal line in the middle and the road meeting with the edge of the forest vertically, the lighter areas in the top right and bottom left,
The artist wanted the focus of the painting on the cupcakes in her hair and he achieved this by using rhythm with the color red, and also creating a slight contrast to bring out the focus. He achieved this by using a black background and painting the figure a light complexion using soft colors and using them in subtle ways throughout the rest of the painting, for example, in her hair, where the main focus is, Cotton used soft colors on a few of the cupcakes but then used the color red for her lipstick, to also create a contrast of colors in the softness of her complexion on her face. There’s a noticeable pattern between the colors red and softer colors like lavender and beige. Its not only used throughout the face
This is a chocolate sponge cake with apricot jam that was invented by a 16 year old in Vienna.
Colour schemes are used to unify artworks and it consists of three common schemes: warm, cool, and neutral. The warm colour scheme is vivid and energetic and tends to advance in space. It consists of red, orange and yellow. Cool colours give an impression of calm, and create a soothing impression. Blue, green and violet are a part of this colour scheme. Neutral colours give a feeling of calm and quiet atmospheres and it consist of grays, blacks and whites. The monochromatic colour scheme is based on several values of one hue. The analogous colour scheme is made up of hues that are next to each other on the colour wheel. Complementary colours are
Color is one of the few things that give a painting its vibrancy and life. It can change the mood with a flip of the value. While creating artwork, artists should always plan what hue, value, and intensity they will use. Color conveys the tone, pattern, movement, symbol, harmony, contrast, mood, and so on in any art expression. Raphael used a generous amount of color in his work The School of Athens, most likely intending to show the unique nature of each person and carving.
There are other simple products that can be used in conjunction with edible glitter and sprinkles to achieve professional looking results. Pre-made royal icing or gum paste flowers, for example, can be added to the cake with just a touch of butter cream. Royal icing flowers usually come in different colors, but gum paste flowers may need to be painted. There are different edible paints for cake decorating and most are simple to apply. Edible spray paint is very simple and will give the cake a professional touch that can be achieved by most. Using edible paints and luster dust on gum paste flowers can create a beautiful piece for the cake. Also, choosing the appropriate colors for the frosting can customize the cake for any occasion. This can be achieved with gel paste which comes in a rainbow of colors. There are so many ways one could decorate a cake and make it look as if they bought it from a store.
This variation and symbolism of colors are used extensively throughout the movie, and allows for a more effective and accurate method in delivering the messages and themes intended. In a way, Anderson is not just telling a story, but he is also painting a picture for the viewers to enjoy on the screen. For instance, extensive use of soft pastels and muted undertones create a dreamlike look to the hotel and objects (the cake box, funicular, Mendl’s uniform & vehicle, etc), clearly distinguished from the other parts in the film. The poetic and impeccable pastel-toned look of the hotel, mostly pink and purple, resembles of a doll’s house: peaceful, and fairytale-like. Not only that, it is comparable in appearance with the graceful pink packages of Mendl’s Patisserie. On that note, the scene that stands out in terms of a strong color contrast is when Gustav is in prison and shares the cake with the other inmates. When he cuts the cake with the “throat slitter”, the soft rosy box of Mendl’s stand out from the gloomy color schemes of the prison. Not only that, the box is placed in the very middle, thereby emphasizing the objet using the “rule of thirds”; composition aspect of mise-en-scene. Also, the director strikes the audience with vivid colors, when in need of reinforcement of the theme or highlighting an essential scene. When Agatha and Dmitri board on the elevator when holding painting, there exists a powerful contrast: between Agatha wearing beige-toned outfit with hairs impeccably braided reminiscent of an angel, Dmitri with all black long coat and messy mustache signifying the dark and the evil (also, wearing the armband similar to that of Hitler), and the elevator guy wearing a vibrant purple uniform. The costumes, which are also a significant part of décor, therefore convey the audience in
The sanitation of the premise is good where it is important to make sure the cake is safe to consume by the consumer.
