The first reason you should volunteer is that it betters the community around you. You can live in the most beautiful city in the world but would not want to live there it was dirty because of a lack of people caring about littering or if there were large amounts of homeless and hungry people because no one volunteered to help build a house or volunteer at a soup kitchen

Volunteering to me didn’t seem very pleasing at first. My focus was simply getting the hours I needed to make my resume look good. However, my perspective changed when I began getting involved with the various activities of the community. I enjoyed helping and serving others, seeing the positive impact I made gave me a great satisfaction. Thankfully, I have volunteered in many areas, however there are a few organizations in which I have invested more time and effort.

I currently do not volunteer at a particular place regularly, but volunteer at various places as much as I can and have accumulated over 250 hours while in high school. By volunteering, students get an opportunity to serve the community and provide help to those who need it, yet not expecting anything in return. For me, I have learned the value of hard work, especially when it makes other peoples’ lives better while volunteering.

Volunteering gives me the opportunity to be there for someone and to change people’s lives including my own. Volunteering to me is a way of giving back to the community or someone in need of help. For as long as I can remember I have always had the passion for helping people especially children and the aged, thus my interest in nursing. Any opportunity to perform an act of kindness made me happy that at least I could be of help to someone. From taking care of my siblings and cousins, babysitting, helping friends and among others. Volunteering and participating in service projects are two of the most rewarding activities in my opinion. Some people may find it was a hassle or only do it because they have to meet the minimum requirement for school or work. Helping others, for me, has always been somewhat second nature to me. Over many years of volunteering I believe I have developed qualities that will stick with me for life and benefit me in my career. As early as freshman year, in high school, I found myself looking for ways to give back. I started by looking for opportunities within school, where I came across the A+ tutoring program, and so my journey of giving back began. Volunteering has been an essential part of my life in the past few years. As an immigrant to Canada, I deemed it my responsibility to serve my community here and back home. Hence when I got ample of opportunities to get involved I always seized them.

I completed my first sixteen hours of service learning at the Hope Haven summer camp for the special needs children. This was a great experience and definitely one of my favorite places to volunteer. I was able to contribute to the organization by keeping an extra eye on the children in their various activities. This included ensuring the children were having fun and not getting into mischief. I also helped set up and take down activities they had planned for the children. I did everything they asked of me and made sure to help kids who needed me.

Volunteering at the Laurel nursing home was an eye opener for me. I had done volunteer work before but the one that inspired me the most was for Laurel Nursing Home. As a group from AP Fatheree Vocational Tech Health Science class, we would go to the nursing home whenever they would allow us to come. At the nursing home, we would come up with games and activities to play with everyone such as: cards, bowling, family feud, and karoake. The best part about volunteering there was seeing the joy on their faces as we all walk in. Our presence meant more to them then we all would have expected especially for the ones who rarely got visitors. Being able to sit and listen to some of the stories they had to tell was a blessing. A volunteering experience that holds a lot of meaning to me was being able to participate in a FCCLA Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) Event called Advocacy. As part of my class assignment, my partner and I first had to research a need in our community, state, or throughout our nation and then “advocate it”, or make it know, as well as find a solution. Our research quickly showed that Texas was ranked fourth in the nation for the number of children living in poverty and our own county was ranked 116th out of 264 counties in Texas for the number of children living in conditions below the Federal Poverty Level. This project went from being a class assignment, to a volunteer experience that positively influenced and changed my life in so many ways.

I also helped with building emergency non-perishable food boxes for individuals and families, and worked with a team of volunteers to fill backpacks with a set menu of nutritious foods that kids can help themselves to all weekend long.I learned that you don’t have to be a student looking for practicum hours. Or have a court order to touch other peoples life .you can donate your time and touch so many life, anybody can volunteer to help at the Kansas food bank .I met a lot of people who brought their family just to help ,also I leaned that do not take life for

I never even asked for vacations like my friends had in the Summer, because volunteering at civitan was much more rewarding.

When I first arrived to volunteer at the facility of Crestview, I did not imagine to acquire all the advice given to me by the elders that reside there. Our goal with this project was to go every monday morning and paint the residents nails. Also we got to visit with them and learn from their experiences. It wasn't just about serving, but it was about gaining the knowledge we ourselves did not know. Every now and then my group and I would go around delivering items to the patients that are not as active. It was just exciting to see how some patients reacted to us being there, they really enjoyed our company.

From this experience volunteering I will hopefully be able to continue tutoring or helping students who are struggling in school. I am going to remember this experience when I am a teacher and be able to pay more attention to the students who are struggling and try my hardest to make sure that no one falls too far behind. I will also make sure that all my students get the help that they need in order to succeed. Overall this experience has taught me a lot and enlightened me with new perspectives from where people come from and their home
