The Painting I chose is called “Mixtec Culture.” And it was painted by Diego Rivera in 1942, Mexico. It’s a Fresco style painting, which is “a wall painting technique that has been used for large scale murals since ancient times” (Getlein 159). This entire painting is an homage to the culture of Mexico, specifically the Mixtec people, and that’s what I love about it. The Mixtec people were renowned for their artwork so it’s fitting that Rivera depicts a peaceful community of artists such as mask and jewelry makers. This painting celebrates the artistic culture of the Mixtec people and that theme is directly linked to the political influences of the time, “Mexican government commissioned artists to create murals about Mexico itself- the glories
Although artist from many races, and cultures utilize murals to speak their mind and represent the struggles of their communities, it is in fact the Chicano and Chicana artist who are the most attracted towards this medium. The reason for this is because many of these Chicanos/as find their inspiration from Los Tres Grandes (The Big Three). These are Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siquieros; three of the most prominent male artist in Mexican history. Also, murals were an easy method of recording history and telling stories that were about the Chicano movement and the fair representation of this culture.
Luis Tapia Heavenly Toaster is the one that caught my eye from the all the other art that I got to see when I went to the Denver museum. I don’t know what it was if it actually was because he had to do with the Virgin Mary or the bright colors and something different and unique that I had never seen before. When I First saw it from the corner of my eye I was like who would do a piece on a toaster not knowing exactly what it was. But once I got closed and read the note card that Luis Tapia had right next to his piece gave me a good understanding of why he chose this piece and why he did it. The card stating that it combined the Hispanic tradition and mischievous sense of humor. Coming for a Hispanic background I can relate to Luis Tapia when he stated that people seeing religious images on highways embankments, walls of buildings, potato chips, and tortillas or in this case freshly toasted bread. The way he had his piece displayed represents in some way how the Hispanic culture displays there’s religious pieces in a pedestal. The colors of his piece are bright and every colorful that when you first see the piece it makes you want to go see it before any other piece. Seeing the details that were in carving the Virgin Mary and Jesus in a small piece like a toaster front and back is very time consuming but also very artistic because seeing the picture is very detailed orientated and is known of what was carved. After seeing his art piece and getting a little
The murals depicted what we have been talking in class since the beginning of the first week. They were just a graphic representation of the struggle of the Chicano Movement and the Chicana Feminism. The painting on the wall showed that the Chicano History was more that a simple fact it was alive and it is still alive. I think that all the painting there was an expression of what Moraga call re-membering. Even though, I am not part of the chicano community, throughout those painting, I feel like I was re-membering the struggle that they faced at this time. I understood where the story started from and where it is going.
In the mission district, I saw a really impressive picture that is not related to Cinco de Myo but I want to write about it. The painting is drawn all over the wall. The name of the building is “Women’s Building.” I have never seen such a huge wall painting. The painting is a collaboration of seven women’s artists. It is drawn women who were active in the 20th century. The building will have been protecting diverse
The creator of the first piece of art work that I choose is by Vicente Forte. The title of the art work is Pajaro Libre which stands for Free bird. The piece was made by Forte in the year of nineteen sixty two. Despite my searches I could not find the size of this painting it was not located on the plaque. The subject is reaching freedom from the downfall of the academic school of thought. The medium of the piece is created from oil and put on a canvas. Vicente Fortes used the technique impasto while creating his piece of art work. The location of the work is at the Weatherspoon Art Museum. The artwork is an original there are no reproductions of the piece there are some like it that he created but not exactly the same. This selection fits into the broader collection at the museum because it is in the abstract art section and this piece is abstract.
The piece I chose is Pablo Picasso’s “Nude combing her hair”. I first saw it at the Kimbell Art Museum and remember admiring it. It was finished in 1906 and is oil paint on canvas. The main (only) figure in this painting is a nude woman, standing, who appears to be combing through her hair with her fingers after bathing. Although abstract, Picasso creates a very elegant, raw, and naturalistic form using color, space, and his depiction of figure.
Diego Rivera was born on December 8, 1886, in Guanajuato, Mexico. At the age of three years Rivera began drawing on his walls at home and his parents saw this and instead of punishing him for drawing on the walls they nurtured his creativity. Rivera made art that portrayed the lives of working class Mexican people. Rivera’s passion for art began from a young age. Around 10 old years he went on to study art at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts in Mexico City where he received training modeled on conservative European academies. Later in his life he traveled to Europe to continue his art studies where he friended many famous artists such as Pablo Picasso. In Spain, Rivera studied the work of El Greco, Velazquez, Goya, and the Flemish masters
One of the paintings I choose is Mother and Child, 1900 by, Mary. Mary Stevenson Cassatt (May 22, 1844 - June 14, 1926) was an American painter and printmaker. She often created images of the social and private lives of women, mostly of the intimate bonds between mothers and children. The year the painting was created in the 1900.The painting it is located at Brooklyn Museum Of Art, New York, USA.
I chose the death of Socrates as the painting that David made, it is an oil painting. It is a classical subject.
One of my favorite paintings I would have to say is Bronzino’s painting Eleanor of Toledo. The reason that is, is because I really like the details in the painting. A lot of the art during the Renaissance were rich in drama and emotion. In fact, in this painting there’s vivid emotion that is portrayed in the expressions of Eleanor and the little
The painting I chose is David’s The Oath of the Horatii. The main ide of this painting is historical; three brothers make a promise to defend Rome and they agreed that they would be willing to give their life in defense. This exemplified the idea of patriotism, that these men are willing to die for the city they love. This painting represents many of the same characteristics as art in the Classical
Cultural heritage plays a important role in my life and its shown through this painting. Looking at the painting I get a deep feeling since it brings back old memories. My grandparents took care of me since my parents migrated to the United States.
Well, I chose the artwork of “The Empress Dowager,Tze Hsi of China 1903” because of the darkness of the painting along with the brownout of the wood frame I’m a big fan of dark woods. I also thought of my mother as the women in the art still and strong, I’m pretty sure Tzi His was a hard core ruler.
The piece that spoke out to me most was Pablo Picasso’s painting Family of Saltimbanques, it is a oil painting on A 7x8 canvas. When they examined the painting they found that the painting had many layers that showed different ideas and sketchings. It was painted during Picasso’s Rose or Pink period it was called so due to his paintings having a orange and pink colors. Also it was marked by the use of circus people, harlequins, and acrobats. Picasso was influenced by the expressionism art style, using color to express atmosphere or mood, even though the painting still holds undertones of sadness and melancholy mainly in the people's faces and body language. The circus people were meant to be representing the lower class people and their will
The art piece I chose was “The School of Athens” by Raphael. In the painting, there are many philosophers congregating together. The painting is not meant to be an actual type of school, but an ideal community of intellects from the classical world. In the center of the painting, Plato and Aristotle are discussing the theories of Idealism vs. Realism. Plato’s hand is raised upwards, indicating that the eternal forms, such as beauty, goodness, and truth are not of this world. He says that they are not of this world, instead they are included in a timeless realm of pure ideas. Aristotle on the other hand, points his right hand straight ahead into the solid world of material reality and into the world of physical science and practical reason.
