“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” Abraham Lincoln was possibly the most intellectual and determined man in office that our world has ever seen. With a driven passion for equality and success, it’s no wonder that you could love him; or hate him. Slavery was one of our country’s biggest disagreements in our nation. Slavery is credited by most historians to be the cause of the United States Civil War that took place over one hundred and fifty years ago. North and South, Confederation and Union, and Johnny Reb and Billy Yank battled it out for four grueling years. Was this war even fighting if it incurred so many deaths, especially the most important man in our country? Unfortunately, the answer is yes because we went through many years of “compromise”, slavery was a huge moral issue, and the economic differences the north and south had. War was inevitable. The North and South were polar opposite when it came to the economy. The South relied heavily on the production of a cash crop: cotton. Cotton was the biggest crop being produced at the time next to some other notable ones such as tobacco and indigo. On the other hand, the North was a more industrial flowing economy, producing cloth and textiles from intricate machines. The nation was not flowing …show more content…

Lincoln describes this in his famous Gettysburg Address that the immorality of slavery was the same thing we fought against when the colonies were oppressed by Great Britain. Lincoln was able to successfully enact the 13th amendment to the constitution, stating that slavery was to be abolished. Its sad to think that Lincoln, such a great man and thinker, was killed too early in his life by an impulsive southerner
