“Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other.” Abraham Lincoln was possibly the most intellectual and determined man in office that our world has ever seen. With a driven passion for equality and success, it’s no wonder that you could love him; or hate him. Slavery was one of our country’s biggest disagreements in our nation. Slavery is credited by most historians to be the cause of the United States Civil War that took place over one hundred and fifty years ago. North and South, Confederation and Union, and Johnny Reb and Billy Yank battled it out for four grueling years. Was this war even fighting if it incurred so many deaths, especially the most important man in our country? Unfortunately, the answer is yes because we went through many years of “compromise”, slavery was a huge moral issue, and the economic differences the north and south had. War was inevitable. The North and South were polar opposite when it came to the economy. The South relied heavily on the production of a cash crop: cotton. Cotton was the biggest crop being produced at the time next to some other notable ones such as tobacco and indigo. On the other hand, the North was a more industrial flowing economy, producing cloth and textiles from intricate machines. The nation was not flowing …show more content…
Lincoln describes this in his famous Gettysburg Address that the immorality of slavery was the same thing we fought against when the colonies were oppressed by Great Britain. Lincoln was able to successfully enact the 13th amendment to the constitution, stating that slavery was to be abolished. Its sad to think that Lincoln, such a great man and thinker, was killed too early in his life by an impulsive southerner
The North’s economy was based on textiles, shipping, and skilled trades. Their climate was not suited for the same type of agricultural products that the South produced like cotton, sugar, rice and tobacco. Northern states like New England manufactured and shipped goods like guns, clocks, plows and axes (page 399). One reason for the South’s dependence on slavery is because their economy relied on the existence of slave labor. For example, the cultivation of cotton depended largely on slave labor, with 75% of the crop grown on plantations,
As one of the most pivotal moments in American history, Abraham Lincoln initiating the civil war has far reaching consequences. However, as important as these consequences are the reasons for fighting the war; and the persistence/heart to endure the war. I believe that Lincoln started the war with the intentions of preserving the union, but as the war went on a new reason came to be -- ending slavery.
Following the outbreak of the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln believed that the Union could not survive whilst divided on the subject of slavery. Revered by numerous historians, Lincoln’s actions throughout the Civil War created social and political change that would bring the United States of America into a new era of social and cultural reform. In attempt to abolish slavery and weaken the Confederacy, the Emancipation Proclamation redefined the objectives of the Civil War. While successful in gradually abolishing the institution of slavery in the southern states, the Emancipation Proclamation failed to extinguish racial discriminations against the newly freed African-Americans. Indeed, progress had been made, but by using intimidation
The South invented the cotton gin which produced cotton a lot faster. One cotton gin equalled the same as seven slaves. According to source 6 “ This tool had completely changed the face of the south's agriculture and wealth. The south provide two thirds of the world cotton. Making the south very rich but also increasing slave numbers and the number of cotton farms.” Meanwhile, the north did not have suitable rock soil for establishing farmers. The north's economy came to be known for its trading and its factories. Source 9 states “ Industries and factories centered in the north. Many factories using mass production methods had sprung up there, and cities grew rapidly.” The North then started to build intricate railroad systems and shipping industries to transport the manufactured goods. As you can see the north and the south had huge technology differences which also caused a lot of tension between the states as
The difference between the North and South’s economy varied greatly. The South had a mainly agricultural economy while the North mainly focused on an industrial economy. It can be seen on the pi charts of the North and South’s economy that the North was more prosperous with their economy do to that fact that one and a half trillion dollars of manufactured goods were produced in the North while only one hundred fifty-five million dollars were produced in the South (Doc 2). The South made most of their money from crops but most importantly cotton. South was the top producer in cotton and it was a very popular crop to buy. The difference in economy between the North and South took a toll on the relationship between them. The difference in economies was a tension that was one event that led to the civil
Lincoln was not exactly opposed to slavery but he was not in favor of it. Lincoln had an idea that he would buy the slaves from there owners and set them free. The South did not want this because there economy depended on it. This would eventually lead to secession. The first state to secede the union was South Carolina. This increased conflicts even more between the war and south especially when the attack on Fort Sumter happened in 1861. Lincoln warned the South that if they did attack Fort Sumter there would be war and sure enough that is exactly what happened. On that day, April 12, 1861 the Civil War began.
Certainly, the Civil War between the North and South was not inevitable. The North had issued many plans and laws to try to abolish slavery throughout the United States, such as the Free Soil Party. If the North had not tried to completely abolish slavery, then the South may have agreed to some reductions in slavery. After the Missouri Compromise was issued to keep the numbers of slave and free states equal, the North continued to work against the South. Additionally, the idea of popular sovereignty allowed citizens to vote on whether slavery should be abolished. If the government decided for the people about the laws of slavery, it would have settled some arguments. Sometimes people do not know what is right for them and a third party needs
The Civil War was inevitable in many reasons. The economic and industrial evolution was mainly in the North side of the United States while the South was just a cotton kingdom, Slave Empire. Also both were completely opposites of one another when it was about freeing the slaves or hiring more. With many debates there has to be sides that would be separated especially if the president has so much hate from the people. With that being said, since many want opposing ideas, the Civil War becomes much evitable.
You could say the Civil War was inevitable. From political, economic, and social injustices tension was brewing between two sides with opposing ideology. Slavery was the main issue being that the North opposed the practice and the South being in favor of it since they relied on slaves for their economy. Through political and social arguments, the South once and for all decided to break off from the Union and create their own country. Due to anger on both sides the Civil War was soon declared and the winner would take all and the loser return with nothing. It can be argued that this war was one of the bloodiest and significant wars in history since it outlined what our country tolerates and how it operates.
The Civil War was inevitable. It was inevitable because the south had believed in slavey, while the north did not believe in slavery. The Compromise of 1850 let California to enter the union as a free state. Territories such as New Mexico and Utah vote on slavery. It had ended slave trade in Washington D.C., and it had began the Fugitive Slave Act which had helped the south. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, written by Harriet Beeher Stowe, had told how slavery was wrong to many people. The south did not find it helpful to them.
The Civil War was inevitable because the south had a very different economy than the north. By 1861, the south was still an agricultural economy, relying on slaves to work the farms. In contrast, the north was more industrialized, and there were many factories in the northern cities. People earned wages in these factories. The cities in the north were densely populated and growing faster than the more sparsely populated southern rural regions. They were growing not only due to the birth rate, but due to European immigrants flocking to the northern cities for jobs. This meant that the northern states would be getting more representatives in congress. Therefore, the north would have a stronger influence in Washington. Tariffs and other
Introduction During the mid eighteen hundreds there were high tensions between the Northern United States and the Southern United States. One of the main causes of the tensions between the Northern and Southern States of the United States was Slavery. After the United States won the United States-Mexican War there was a large portion of new land for the United States but there was one problem. The Northern part of the United States did not want to have slavery but the Southern part of the United States wanted slavery. To compromise they split the remaining and new land equally among the Northern and Southern parts of the United States.
Overall, I think that the Civil was inevitable. The Civil War was a result of different views in the North and South on slavery, tariffs, state rights, and trade. By the end of 1854, I don't think there was any way to go around having the war because of where everything was going. In the South, the people believed they had to have slaves and it was their right to own slaves. The slaves were used in production of crops such as cotton. If the right for the South to have slaves was revoked, then it may have harmed states' rights as a whole and caused even more problems. The complication with slavery came because the North didn't believe that slavery should exist while the South had slaves.
The civil war was inevitable, only however, after one key event; the cotton gin made the civil war inevitable. The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 was the key element which enabled the south to have sufficient vested interest in their traditional lifestyle in order to feel the need to defend it at all costs even from their Northern countrymen. The core argument of this essay centres around the evidence which clearly defines their being in existence two nations' with in America constantly in opposition to each other. Therefore the growth of sectionalism and the events which led up to the conflict made war an inevitable outcome of the hostilities which had arisen from the to ideologically
The American Revolution marked significant changes in the political, social, and economic status of the Americans. For a long, time the lives of the Americans were darkened by the British colonial rule. The British government passed several intolerable Acts. For instance, the Massachusetts Government Act was a restriction to town meetings. As a result, the American opponents began collective actions to disapprove the colonial rule. After a long struggle, the Americans overthrew the existing rule. However, the new dawn did not provide freedom to all citizens. The slaves were compelled to continue supplying forced labor to the Whites. The resultant effect of oppression pushed the slaves to start fighting for the equality. In this case, it is evident that the Civil War was a direct consequence of the American Revolution.[1]
