Municipal waste is disposed of in three different ways. As of 2004 it is estimated that 71 percent is land filled, 16 percent incinerated, and 13 percent recycled. Other wastes that have to be disposed of are nuclear and hazardous wastes. The environmental effects of different waste management solutions will be discussed as well as ideal ways, in my opinion, to dispose of different forms of solid wastes. Landfills are the most commonly used form of disposing wastes today. It is also a form of disposal that causes many environmental impacts that are in need of addressing. A major effect of landfills is Leachate, a contaminated liquid that percolates through the waste in a landfill and probably the most addressed issue. This …show more content…
I say this because according to EPA.gov, paper contributes to 40 percent of a landfill's contents. This staggering statistics lead to my long- term solution in handling waste. The government should enact a law that makes it mandatory that all Americans must recycle their newspapers. This step alone will reduce the amount of garbage that goes into our landfills by 13 percent (Epa.gov). A department should be created to check for improper disposal of newspapers and provide hefty fines for Americans that do now want to obey this law. It may seem strict but the overall benefits of this enactment would outweigh the initial cry of Americans that feel that this proposal is unfair. After this program has been implemented and the bugs worked out successfully the government should keep adding materials to the "mandatory recycling lists". To think that if we could get a 100% recycling rate of paper, that would be a 40 percent reduction of waste disposal that goes into our landfills. Another aspect of recycling that should be focuses on is the pay-as-you- throw program utilized in many cities today. Factors plaguing every American adult are economic issues because every American strives to survive economically in this world. The pay-as-you-throw program directly affects a consumer's wallet by charging for the amount of waste a consumer disposes of. This program would make Americans more waste conscience. My idea to expand this program is rewarding
Recycling is the process of making new products from a product that has originally served its purpose. The process of recycling starts when used products are disposed in an appropriate, environmentally friendly way. Items made from materials such as paper, tin cans, aluminum cans, plastic water bottles, and glass, which people use in everyday life, can be separated from regular trash and put in an appropriate recycling bin. The United States now realizes the importance of recycling. However, many ignorant people still think separating recyclables requires too much work. Requiring mandatory recycling would prod these individuals into action. Lack of recycling leads to dramatic consequences such as polluting the environment and raising the number of landfills. Delay is critical; time plays a significant role in waste management. The sooner American communities recycle properly the better it will be for the environment and our surroundings. People need to become conscious and take responsibility as a society to protect the earth, keep it clean and beautiful, and preserve the natural resources. The United States can achieve this goal by implementing mandatory recycling.
Recycling and composing initiatives should be adopted and put into practice in communities throughout the United States. Recycling helps improve the enviorment we live in.By recycling we can make the enviorment a much neater place. In fact recycling can help save money.
Recycling one ton of paper saves seventeen mature trees, seven thousand gallons of water, three cubic yards of landfill space, and two barrels of oil (“Environmental Impacts”). It is much easier than most people think to make such a big difference. If every person took a few minutes to go through the trash being put in the garbage and recycle the things that can be, it could completely change the world. It is the peoples job to take care of the planet and everything on it, and if people are not willing to do the right thing on their own, then they should be forced to. Everyone should be required to recycle because it is good for the environment, helps the economy, and saves energy, space, and resources.
Salvaging what trash we can, will assists in reducing garbage in all quarters of the earth. Actually, given the opportunity, most people would choose to recycle items. Providing more recycling bins would grant community members that very opportunities. According to the National Geography Organization, “55% of our trash goes to landfills, 33% recycled, and 12.5% gets incinerated.” If more communities similar to ours were to provide more recycling opportunities, the percentage of recycled garbage can be raised considerably. Furthermore, the
Some may argue that a greater amount of people recycle because the availability of recycling is increasing year by year. But still, “...according to Ipsos Public Affairs survey, only half of adults recycle daily” (Schumaker 1). WIth so few people recycling, there are more ways that we are destroying our environment. Since these adults aren’t recycling, our youth will continue to follow their ways and will expand the problem. Teaching children, who are our future, to recycle gives our country a better chance at improving our environment. The ratio from trash bins to recycling bins is yet to be remotely balanced. There are plenty more trash cans at public venues compared to recycling bins. If there were more recycling bins in public places, then it would motivate more people to recycle. The United States needs to figure out a method to make more
Recycling is one of the most common ways to keep America clean. The recycling bins are one of the most recognizable logos across the world. People all across the U.S. have recycling bins, inside of their household. The sad thing is most people do not use them, they most of the time just throw stuff in the regular trash that could be recycled. For example, plastic, paper, cans, glass, cardboard, and even computer hardware (www.recycleacrossamerica.org). People don’t realize that they could be doing the world a big favor, just by recycling these everyday items.
Americans have yet to face the unnerving reality of the fact that “in 2008 only 7.1% of the 30.05 million tons of plastic waste in America was recycled” (Linn). This low percentage is shocking, outrageous, and should terrify the American public, but this number can change. Recycling is not just a feel good experience; it is a way to help save energy, space, and money. However, with the enormous amount of trash being thrown out each year, landfills are increasing in size creating numerous issues. The staggering amount of waste increases greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming and building up dangerous toxins that sink underground into our soil and water, overflows into wildlife habitats and oceans, and costs a large amount of money to remove. By fining residents who incorrectly dispose of recyclable goods, implementing recycling as a requirement in educational institutions and other business and residential settings, categorizing the
Historically, the state of garbage in California has not been that pleasing. Most of the landfills in the State are currently overused as some continues to get worse with time. This probably is the case because by the year 2013, only 36.6% of the entire waste products in United States were actually recycled. Moreover, according to the findings presented from CalRecycle study, the existing organic wastes constitute 32.4% of all the waste product. Sadly, these organic wastes pose a significant threat to the surrounding environment (Donovan). The common practice of burying solid wastes in a landfill is confirm dangerous to the environment because of the chemicals that later build up beneath the earth surface hence producing Leachate, a poisonous
The United States of America has come a long way since its inception. The development of homes, cars, technologies, goods, and services has evolved. Also, the way in which Americans consume has drastically changed. And with all these great things, came solid waste generation, and unfortunately not methods for disposing of it in an environmentally friendly manner. The United States is the top trash-producing country in the world at over 1,600 pounds per person per year. Although the U.S. accounts for 5% of the world’s population, it generates 40% of the world’s waste. According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Municipal Solid Waste Generation, Recycling, and Disposal in the United States: Facts and Figures for 2010 “Americans generated about 250 million tons of trash and recycled and composted over 85 million tons of materials, resulting in 34.1 percent recycling rate. On average, each American generates about 4.43 pounds of waste each day. Only 1.51 pounds of that material were recycled and composed” (EPA, 2010).
Finally, there is a way to fight against landfills, and it is called recycling! Dictnary.com said that recycling is to “convert (waste) into reusable material.” If we recycle we can save energy, reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, help new jobs to be made in recycling business, and reduce trash in the landfills. Www.conserve-energy-future.com clarrifies “2000 pounds of recycled paper can actually help to save 17 trees, over 350 gallons of oil, and a lot of landfill space!” We need to recycle to save mother earth. Consequently recycling is the perfect way to fight
Visit any landfill in the United States, and you are sure to find items whose useful lives have not yet been exhausted, and materials that could be turned into other products. Wasted resources in our landfills take up space that is becoming increasingly limited, and also have a negative impact on the overall health of the planet. In 2013, a King County Waste Characterization study showed that 72 percent of what is thrown out can be recycled. Of that 72 percent, the largest
Throwing away paper eventually find its way to sitting in a pile of garbage piling up on our Earth. Garbage may be little in your house but everyday, according to The Atlantic, “The typical person in a developed country produces about 2.6 pounds of garbage a day.” We have produced over 2.6 trillion pounds of garbage and it all ends up piling into every spot on the Earth. According to The Atlantic, “59% of garbage goes to a landfill, 33% in dumps,
People Need to Recycle In the United Sates, where the population is inflated every year. The amount of space for landfills decreases every day. The need for recycling should not be asked, it should just be done out of habit. Everyone in America needs to recycle, to help the lamdfill problem, help the environment, and help produce new products from recycled goods. In America there is about two-hundred and eight tons of residential and commercial trash generated a year, 4.3 pounds per person a day (Prichard 1A). This is an overwhelming amount of trashed produced yearly. When people recycle this number can be drastically cut. But many people do not practice and use
I propose that we adopt a similar policy here in Billings, a policy that requires us to recycle. With this, we would require households to have a separate recycle bin, similar to one that we push trash in. And to have recycling companies make their rounds and do the weekly
Over the years threatening environmental issues like global warming and are making countries all over the world put into consideration actions such as mandatory recycling in order to prevent disasters. The huge amount of garbage produced every day is fulfilling landfills quickly in the past few years, polluting and contributing to global warming. Recycling is considered a small solution for a big problem as global warming but also can have a huge impact in our daily life. Besides protecting the environment, mandatory recycling should help reduce pollution, save energy and provide new job opportunities. Passing a law that makes permanent the practice of recycling in a country like the United States will promote recycling awareness, preventing a world covered in waste and pollution.
