(“Water security”, 2010) Moreover, the amount of water needs for food production is the problem. People desire more and more water for even more agriculture. Yet the most major contributor to water scarcity and to the ecosystem is the way people use water (Molden, De Fraiture, & Rijisberman, 2007). In addition, the quantity, availability, and price of key food product inputs can be directly impacted upon by water scarcity having a negative affect on animal and crop yields. The price of food commodities is particularly vulnerable and defenseless to the shocks of unexpected extreme weather incidents, while animals yields are highly at risk from raised water temperatures especially aquaculture and access to clean water sources (Krechowicz, Venugopal, Sauer, Somani, & Pandey, 2010). Within the next ten to twenty years, the water crisis seems likely to trigger significant shortfalls in cereal production. As a result, an enormous global food crisis will occur (Quarterly, 2010).
Water scarcity, the global critical issue cause increasing environmental stress, and it affects the ecosystem. In order to solve the water scarcity problem, huge dam construction causes interception of river flow, and it is endangering the dependent creatures. The study estimated 24% of mammals, 12% of birds, and 10% of freshwater fish types are endangered (“Water security”, 2010).
According to the International Water Management Institute environmental research organisation global water stress is increasing, and a third of all people face some sort of water scarcity. Where demand exceeds supply and no effective management operates, there will be conflicts between the various players involved.
Around the world our water supply is depleting. Our water is becoming contaminated making it harmful for both mammals and aquatic life. Today over one billion people go without adequate water supply and every fifteen seconds a child dies of waterborne illness. Sources of water that once supplied water to millions can no longer meet the supply and demand of the water need. Scientist predict that the amount of useful water will keep depleting greatly in the years to come. In the next couple of pages it will talk about both the geological and human reasons as to why are water supply is depleting.
Many people know that water is essential for human-being and it is not only valuable for health and life, but water is also important for industry and agriculture. Furthermore, use of water has a spiritual, cultural and recreational dimension. However, water resources are not infinite. Wide and inefficient use of water resources can lead to irreversible consequences, such as water shortage. This essay will firstly discuss the problem of water shortage on examples of developed and developing countries and include the diversification of the same issue in the different parts of the world. It will also identify causes and effects of this environmental problem on society and other spheres of life. Moreover, in this essay I am going to propose
Thesis statement (central idea): Access and availability to fresh water are essential to the survival of the human race. Fresh water is a finite source and once it is gone, we have limited options to replenish it, so we must take action to conserve the fresh water we do have especially at home in the United States.
“Water has always been man’s most indispensable natural resource” (Solomon 3). Despite its substantial nature, water has frequently been misallocated, mismanaged, misused and undervalued by a great number of societies in the civilized world. In accordance with Solomon, the civilization has reached a global crisis point in terms of both quality of water and its quantity. Both in water-poor and water-rich communities, people are now directly positioned in water scarcity age. Although, the book “Water: the Epic Struggle for Wealth, Power and Civilization” ensures a timely warning for modern societies that all would receive benefit from a less careless water treatment, but the author argues that “while the risk of water war in this most thirsty and politically combustible of regions is high, it is not inevitable. The existential threat posed by water scarcity is so palpable that it generates opposing cooperative instincts for mutual survival as well” (Solomon 412), but it is hard to agree with the position of the author on this question, as it is well-known fact that the Middle East area is an extremely conflict war zone, where water may become one of the apples of discord and initiate a new war.
There is an ill use of the limited fresh water supplies in certain regions of the world. Water sources are being threatened by contamination through ill disposal of waste byproducts such as sewage, pollutants (chemicals) and ill management of agricultural pollutants such as fertilizers (pg. 46). The use of salt water for landscaping in coastal regions are also contributing to this scarcity as influxes in global temperatures (global warming) causes ground water depletion through evaporation. Also must of the rain water aren’t captured and stored; most of it evaporates and some end up in the ocean (pg. 48). Primarily the issue is that the supply of fresh water isn’t able
Water is the mainspring of civilization. This was recognized at the dawn of civilization in Mesopotamia and Egypt. Water was conceived as the source of all things, eternal and primeval.
Food security is affected by our warming climate. Increase in carbon dioxide, warmer climate, negatively affects crop production and reduced yields a crop staples. Low food productions can easily lead to food insecurity in the future. Earth’s current state of human induced warming, ocean acidification, and changes in frequency and intensity of climate related factors will make many areas that already has low food production at an increased likelihood of food insecurity. A necessary adaptation to maintain or even increase food production will be to improve personal and agriculture water management and land management. Food security will continue to be dependent on the prices of internationally traded food
Water scarcity is a challenge to international stability because water is vital to survival. Water scarcity is an insufficient supply of water, whether caused by climate change or mismanagement, which leads to unmet water needs in a geographic area or within a population. The scarcity of water in one region can have international implications. For example, a scarcity of water in one part of the world can drastically drive up the price of foods in another area.3 Countries sharing the same water supply are more likely to experience conflict as the need for water increases.4 In order to sustain the current rate of population growth, the world will require a forty percent increase in clean water by 2030.5 The threat of not having enough clean water can create international instability because governments will be forced to compete for natural resources.6
It seems that we still think that we have plenty of water on the ground and it is hard to even imagine that the water would be gone. But the true is that water is becoming scarcer in today world. Our growing demand for water with the lack of enough water or lack of access to safe water should worry all of us. It is not only problem of poorest countries where water will be scarcest soonest, but this is becoming the issue of global scale. In face of climate change, pollution and over-use of water we all need to take actions to protect this very important natural resource, that without it will be no life on earth. In today world clean, safe drinking water is scarce more and more. Nearly 1 billion people in the developing world do not have access to it. Yet, we take it for granted, we waste it, and
Thesis statement: Fresh and clean water is vital to the very existence of the human race.
We usually associate water shortages with a lack of drinking water, but global water scarcity has a critical impact on food security. Agriculture consumes more water than any other source. Climate change is altering patterns of weather around the world, causing shortages and droughts in some areas and floods in others. Water is key to food security. Crops and livestock need water to grow. Agriculture requires large quantities of water for irrigation and various production processes. Water scarcity may limit food production and supply, putting pressure on food prices and increasing countries’ dependence on food imports
Security The essential element needed for crops is water; used in agricultural development to flood the land and prep the soil. Water usage is an ongoing process for the United States Department of Agriculture Services and the future adaptation in climate change. As it is integrated with security by keeping America 's farmers and ranchers in business, as they face the uncertainties of weather and markets. This equilibrium of safety and risk must be maintained, in order to provide stability and strength for the agricultural economy. 12 Unstable populations can often fall prey to food shortages and water scarcity. These events then become a primary concern for the U.S. on mitigating against possible outbreaks of water and turmoil.
Water is our past. Water is our future. Without it, we cannot survive, and there are no alternatives. Many people have likened the issue of water scarcity to our current economic struggle over petroleum. Without petroleum, we cannot drive our cars, and we may have to walk to school or work. This is not the case for water, as we are not interested in the issue of sustaining life itself. Unfortunately, water scarcity is in the household of our near future. This means that, similarly, petroleum leads to war now, water will lead to war in the near future. There are three main reasons why water scarcity will become one of our most serious problems in the near future.
“In spite of the fact that water is accessible on this planet in vast amount however it is not uniformly conveyed. It possesses 70% of earth surface from which 2.5% is viewed as fresh water and the staying 97.5% is exceptionally saline Ocean” (Lenine, 1983).
