What do you know now about ways to incorporate student's prior knowledge, experiences, home language and culture in science teaching? Provide specific examples of how you would do this with your own students. How has 4311 and 4312 impacted what you know. How has your student teaching experiences impacted what you know?
There are a few things I know now about ways to incorporate student’s prior knowledge, experiences, home language and culture into science teaching. I have learned that the children learn more effectively when we teach them something they already know about. When we give a lesson plan that link new information to the student’s prior knowledge, they will activate the student’s interest and curiosity, and would infuse instruction with a sense of purpose. An example of how I would do this with my own students is that as I connect the new lesson with their prior

In this experiment, it was used to help show the children the damage soda can do to your teeth and why brushing after drinking it is important. The children can relate to this because the egg’s shell is similarly to the enamel of a child’s tooth. Since some of the eating and drinking habits of ours make it difficult for the enamel to protect our teeth from damages, doing this can help the child to start brushing their teeth. As teachers, we can also check for understanding by talking to them about good dental hygiene practices. To let the students know that it is important to brush their teeth every day, making sure to explain how certain foods, drinks, and activities can stain the teeth. And then talk about how too much acidic drinks will erode the outside of the teeth. The students enjoyed this lesson and had shared their many experiences about the teeth or dental visit. I loved this lesson also because we can connect with the children and learn more about
Teaching towards their strengths, not just forcing information on them in which they wont understand does exactly this. I also feel that incorporating aspects of their lives such as culture, community and history will assist in assimilating this information due to personal connection and social likenesses. Sometimes it takes a sense of belonging before one can truly be taught and understand fully. Again, I feel that this type of instruction does exactly that.
c) What teaching approach did you take in your session? How well did it work? What evidence do
1. (15pts) What could have been the students’ hypothesis? (Include specifics on what we discussed in class regarding a scientific hypothesis.)
Dental Hygiene is very important to me and has been since I was a child, this has influenced my desire of becoming a pediatric dentist. In a personal interview i conducted with Dr.Bills she informed me of this, “Dental Hygiene is emphasized by all dentists, we want our patients to have elegant white teeth and pleasant breath”(Bills). I would like to teach children the importance of keeping their teeth brushed so that they will have a beautiful smile and healthy teeth. Pediatric Dentistry is a superb fit for me because I care about dental health and I want children to know the importance as well. It is never too early for children to learn how important dental hygiene is.
Establishing school-based sealant program at local elementary schools through in-terpersonal communication can protect the general population from developing dental car-ies by 60% (Oral Health 310). According to the article, Oral Health, the prevention of dental caries in young students is essential to protecting not only dental health but also their overall physical health as dental caries may affect their health negatively due to built up bacteria and malnutrition caused by decreased consumption from dental pain (Oral Health 312). School aged children are the most at risk group for developing dental caries. College students in Health Psychology could help to protect dental health of children by increasing the number that get pit and fissure in several different ways. College students involved in a service- learning project will be divided in to three different groups. One group will be responsible for calling the parents or meeting with them in order to educate them and answer any questions they may have and to schedule appointments at the school in order to apply the pit or fissure sealant. Another group will be responsible for calling the parents back after the initial application or sealant for a follow up
In today’s society, a high percentage of people consume beverages that contain added sugars and acid, but what effects does this sugar and acid have on our tooth enamel? Are sports drinks better for you than soda? This paper will discuss the effects of soda, sports drinks and energy drinks on the enamel of a person’s teeth, what is enamel and why is it important. Dental erosion is a chronic loss of dental hard tissue that is chemically etched away from the tooth surface by acid. Most people would believe that the sugar in drinks was the main reason for the damage to their teeth. Although an excessive amount of sugar is not good for the teeth or body, it is the acid in the drinks that prove to produce the most damage. I will also discuss solutions and ways to protect and care for the health of teeth. It is very important to drink plenty of water and practice good oral hygiene daily.
The intake of soda and juices have become a daily habit for many children and teens. The consumption of soda, because of the intake increases in the past years, has became one of the leading causes of tooth decay. The phrase “Sip All Day, Get Decay” is very accurate, when we drink too much soda or juice, we expose our teeth to a harmful acid and sugars Limiting your intake of harmful drinks and brushing and flossing your teeth will reduce your risk of tooth decay and improve your oral heath. So whenever you are drinking soda, juice, or any other acidic sugary drink, remember the health of your enamel, or just overall your
Do you like white shiny teeth well then this is a great experiment for you. This experiment was important because clean and white teeth is important. This experiment helps you have better knowledge about what drinks you are drinking and how they are affecting the color of your teeth. Something that could change in the way you go about your everyday life is simply drinking out of a straw to prevent the discoloration of your teeth. The problem I was trying to solve was which drink will discolor teeth the hollowed out egg the most after five days. My approach to find out this answer was to soak one hollowed out egg in Coke, one hollowed out egg in tea and one hollowed out egg in coffee. The answer that I obtained was that Coke stained the egg the
With fondness, I will always remember when I first began to consider dentistry as a future profession. My childhood mentor Dr. Spigner was having a weekend workshop for his patients, at this moment, I was exposed to dental education at its full capacity. While there we learned how to properly brush and floss our teeth, the benefits of tooth hygiene, and how fillings are applied to adolescent teeth. After learning these helpful tips, I wanted to share my newfound information about the importance of
Early childhood caries (ECC), which is commonly known as tooth decay among children younger than 6 years of age, is currently affecting nearly half of the United States 5-year-olds, despite it being highly preventable (Hirsch, Edelstein, Frosh, Anselmo, 2012). No mother wants their children to be prone to dental decay or make them suffer from this disease if it is not necessary. According to Kawashita, Kitamura, Saito, and Corporation (2011), “Children experiencing caries as infants or toddlers have a much greater probability of subsequent caries in both the primary and permanent dentitions.” The problem with early childhood caries starts with lack of parental education and poor oral hygiene. ECC, can be referred to as “baby bottle tooth decay” and many parents don’t realize how detrimental it can be for the baby’s oral health or maybe don’t even realize that they have been putting their baby at risk.
I have implemented a tooth brushing procedure here at my center because I found out a lot of the children do not brush their teeth prior to coming to childcare. The children say things like we were running late, mommy didn’t have time or I couldn’t find my toothbrush. In my opinion oral hygiene is very important, I myself brush my teeth three times a day and I am hoping to encourage the children to do the same.
The patient was explained what this means for his teeth when it comes to cavities. The patient was surprised to find out the types of food such as bread having a cariogenic affect on teeth. The patient was educated on cariostatic foods that may be substituted such as cheeses and dairy products. The patient was also educated on the affects snacking in-between meals have on dentition. For this reason the patient received a high CAMBRA score. The patient was informed on how snacking in-between meals results in a high risk for developing caries. Motivational interviewing techniques were used to determine if patient had his own goals after discussing the information. The patient showed signs of wanting to change and a goal was set to reduce exposure time by forty minutes each day. The patient was will do this by increasing consumption of cariostatic foods throughout meals. The patient will also attempt to be more conscious about snack choices substituting these with cariostatic foods. He will be shown the nutrition report at upcoming visit and together the clinician and patient will review deficiencies and their
By allowing this freedom and creativity I believe the children will also teach me since they will all have such a different outlook on how the topic is portrayed or makes sense to them. One example on how I could do this is if I’m teaching a lesson on the four seasons I would allow each child to represent what the four seasons mean to them. Some children may create pictures or art out of other materials, while some might write an essay or act something out. There are so many ways that the children could represent this one topic, which demonstrates how there are a hundred languages to
Although considered preventable, 53.6% of Medicaid eligible kindergarteners studied in California had a history of dental caries and 27.8 % had decay present at the time of the screening (Dental Health Foundation, 2006). Teaching young children effective oral hygiene techniques is the most effective way to protect the child’s teeth and help them to develop a daily oral wellness routine ("Dental Health," 2015). By focusing on those most in need, Medicaid eligible preschool aged children, teaching and reinforcing effective oral hygiene strategies early in life will foster a lifelong habit of oral health wellness (Gardner, Lally, & Wardle, 2012).
Generally, your dental hygiene becomes weakened when you lack the minerals that are needed. The higher the acidic level is within your consumption can be very brutal, it can make your teeth enamel softer and weaken your teeth strength. You end up lacking calcium which is supposed to make your bones stay strong. Soft drinks have the highest sugar and acid, yet lower the pH level compared to water. “It takes 32 glasses of water to neutralize a glass of cola” (Radomski, 40). Citric acid in cola makes a weakness of dental, changing the neutralization of saliva and destroys enamel surface as Ph.D. Manny explained the article Soft drinks and dental erosion, “Citric acid is the predominant acid in non- cola drinks and is especially erosive to teeth because it chelates calcium effectively” (Radomski, 41). If a kid drinks a can of soda every day, his enamel will be declining, stained teeth and cavities and plaque will start to build their teeth. Children’s teeth are new and weak, they must learn to take care of their teeth while they are young. Drinking a lot of soft drinks is a bad habit that most children have a hard time controlling. The oral
