If you are in search of an adventurous, heartwarming tale of a girl and her dog, then the 2008 Indie work Wendy and Lucy is definitely not the film for you. It has a slow progression and lacks action. This story focuses on the hardships of a young woman, Wendy, and her dog, Lucy, as they travel north to Alaska. On the way, the pair find themselves stuck in Oregon. After making some poor decisions, Wendy loses her precious Lucy and spends the remainder of the movie trying to find her. Nevertheless, despite its many faults, this movie had an overall positive impact on me. I would recommend this movie because what Wendy and Lucy lacks in action and adventure, it completely makes up for in emotional appeal and realism. This film is definitely a movie of its time. It came out during the middle of the great recession and it beautifully displayed the hardships America faced at that time. In his 2008 review of the movie, A. O. Scott breaks down this underlying theme. He proclaims, “But underneath this plain narrative surface – or rather, resting on it the way a smooth stone rests in your palm – is a lucid and melancholy inquiry into the current state of American society….’Wendy and Lucy’ find[s], in one woman’s partly self-created hard luck, an intimation of more widespread hard times ahead” (Scott, 2008). …show more content…
It draws people in on a strong emotional level through allusions to the Great Recession, as well as through Michelle Williams’ spot-on performance of the lead. Kelly Reichardt’s amazing directing and editing techniques gives this film a realistic feel, which, in turn, connects with people through relatability. All these aspects put together made this film on of the best I had seen in a long time. So, while Wendy and Lucy may not be heart-warming or adventurous, the utterly relatable story of a girl and her dog will remain an essential view for Americans for years to
The movie Red dog was able to express all types of themes. The Australian culture are full of comedy, romance, tragedy and mateship, and all these themes are evident in the film Red dog. Comedy was a huge part of this film, nearly even scene showed comedy and would give you a laugh. Half way through the movie the character Peeto was to babysit/look after Red dog for John while he took Nancy out on their first date. Peeto was secretly doing his knitting but Red Dog showed the mates Vanno, Jocko and Jack and embarrassed him. This demonstrates that there is always a good laugh as an Australian. Romance is another key theme in the movie Red dog. John has never stayed in the same place for more than two years but this time he stays in Dampier for one particular reason. He was in love with Nancy. Love, relationships and romance are all very common in Australia. People make sacrifices to be with the people they love. There is also sadness and tragedy in Australia. Whether it be a loss of a friend, family member or dog. There are many sad and heart touching scenes in this film, starting from the loss of your wife and child (Jocko), the loss of your recent new partner (Nancy) or the loss of the famous wanderer dog (Red dog). With loss and tragedy also comes powerful memories and stories to reflect
A system is a set of interrelated parts. Systems theory assumes that a system must be understood as a whole, rather than in component parts. It is a way of looking at the world where all the objects are interrelated with one another. Many family systems are addressed in the movie Little Miss Sunshine.
In the story “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, he shows how the boys lost all innocence and civilization. The boys went from having innocent child minds to taking lives of other people, acting savage, and losing all civilization due to problems on the island. The boys had forgotten where they came from and became savage in order to survive; it was the need of survival that caused the loss of innocence among the boys.
The movie itself covers so many pivotal and defining moments in history and provides an intimate observation with a twist of humor and charm that is not often depicted in movies such as these. The movie itself gives an honest insight into situations of the time that are not often addressed. One moment early on in the movie depicts the strong relationship between a single mother and her child in the 1950s, as a rule of thumb television
The film that I chose to write about is a Paramount Pictures presentation titled Mean Girls, starring Lindsay Lohan and also featuring a handful of Saturday Night Live cast members, including Tina Fey the author of this picture. The reason behind choosing this film is because it has a unique style of introducing characters, transitioning between scenes, and various tools to help spice up the film. Being one of my personal favorites, Mean Girls is a comedy about a home schooled teenage girl who enters high school for the first time. She tries to figure herself out by where she can fit in and who she needs to become friends with.
In the colonial American time period during the seventeenth century there were many important sources that have come up missing. Some are just missing and others destroyed. The modern- day historians have the task of trying to find this lost information to determine the facts about
I watched this film in my ninth grade English class. Here, we had to compare the movie to the Odyssey. When I watched this movie again and related it to the Great Depression, the movie actually made a lot more sense. I understood why people were doing such things as the kid asking the men if they were the bank, why the Ku Klux Klan was still in existence, why the area was flooded, and how such music came into existence. In my opinion, I think this is the reason why people would not know how these little situations compared to the Great Depression. I am glad that I chose to watch this film for the second time because it helped explained situations for a more reasonable experience.
Phoebe and Micah have much in common with many historical figures. Phoebe for example, is very similar to Vera Rubin, Amelia Earhart, and Frida Kahlo. Micah shares many traits with Maximilian Kolbe, Miley Cyrus, and Stephen Colbert.
I cut Jack off, as I dreadfully ask him, "What. What happened yesterday." Did they change something about the plan without telling me?
Bev and Sheila met 19 years ago . At Bev's daughter ,Meredith's wedding. It was Christmastime. Sheila was the harpist at the reception. She was smitten by the love bug, the instance she caught a glimpse of her.Bev was tall with olive skin and oversized brown eyes that blinked a lot. She was willowy for a woman late in middle age. The way Bev sashayed around the dining hall like a butterfly in that lacy light pink pantsuit was mesmerizing. It was improbable anything would come of her fantasy. She was mostly a lesbian in theory these days.
No scene according to me was too long or too short that’s where I felt the editing played a major role. Marley and me happen to be a movie filled with emotion that dog lovers connect with. Prominent scenes of the movie are therefore the ones like where Marley is very sick, Owen Wilson’s character talks to him as they’re walking up a hill, asking Marley to let him know when “it’s your time to go.” The next scene shows Owen finding Marley lying near the fireplace, too old to climb the stairs.
In need of some light hearted entertainment and a good laugh, I chose the movie “Fun with Dick and Jane” for this assignment. “Fun with Dick and Jane” asks the common question, “What is the difference between a corporate crook and a bank robber?” The movie opens with Dick leaving his home in the picture perfect neighborhood in the year 2000. Dick is married to Jane and they have a son who is more or less being raised by the housekeeper, Blanca. The family is living in a culture of high powered, high paying jobs, high tech appliances and high stress living. Dick and Jane have it all and they can’t get enough of it.
At first I had low expectations for this movie but i was very surprised with how much I liked The Fundamentals of Caring. Paul Rudd and Craig Roberts with funny and charming performances and the chemistry really made the film worthwhile. I thought Selena Gomez's performance was solid as well. I found the movie to be very well made and I was quite happy with getting to watch it on Netflix.
Sylvia Plath was an English poet and short story writer born in 1900s. She was best known for her novel, “The Bell Jar,” and poems such as “Daddy.” Plath’s life, including her poetry, her sanity and her marriage was a cycle of ups and downs. After her death in 1963, Plath’s life was depicted in the 2003 film Sylvia, starring Gwyneth Paltrow.
The movie In Time was Directed and written by Andrew Niccol in 2011. The movie's main premise is that in the future humans are now engineered to stop aging at 25 years and given one more year to live. In this universe time has now a double value as it is used economically to make exchanges but it also represents the time till your death. As a result, society have been divided groups, some live with minimum wages which puts them every day on the brink of death, but also a small group of people who get to live forever and live in the highest of luxuries. Which makes it a question, how is the movie In Time, a reflection of the life’s of American citizens in respect to their socioeconomic status of the United States between 2010-2016?.
