Collingwood begins his discussion by exploring what a work of art is and how it comes into being. He states that others have come to the conclusion that art is not produced by accident, but that it is produced by some controlling force that resides in the unconscious of the artist (Collingwood). Collingwood summarizes some of the theories that exist on how art comes into being but concludes that theorizing is not best approach to answering the questions about art (Collingwood). He believes that theorists over look simple answers and jump to more complicated theories than are necessary (Collingwood). Collingwood states that the activity that voluntarily produces is called creation (Collingwood). Theologians often use the word creation to describe God’s making of the world and therefore some may see a problem with using the world for art (Collingwood). However, the word create is also used daily to talk about items that have nothing to do with God (Collingwood). According to Collingwood, creating something refers to making that is non-technical, happens voluntarily, does not require an end, has a plan, and does not transform raw material (Collingwood). Therefore, the making of art is referred to as creating. Collingwood makes some important distinctions in order to clarify his argument. First, he clarifies the distinction between creation that is related to God and creation that is related to art (Collingwood). He asserts that creation from God is creation in which no
The two works of art that I have chosen to analyze are 1) Jordan Casteel. Miles and JoJo. 2014. Oil on canvas, 54” x 72” and 2) Aaron Fowler. He Was. 2015. Mixed media, 134” x 165” x 108”. The themes that these works of art represent in regards to the exhibit are love, family, and pain. However, they also fall into other thematic categories. The main theme that seems to apply to both “Miles and JoJo” and “He Was” is Human Experience. Additionally, these arts differ in some ways.
Over the course of several months the meaning and understanding of aesthetics and its application to art have taken place as a means to expanding the mind of a budding aesthete. Multiple respected aesthetes have been discussed regarding their philosophical approach to art and the theories influencing their philosophical stance. Some theories have been refuted while others have been regarded yet the insight provided by these aesthetes has been profound. Several of these aesthetes studied have helped in shaping one particular individual’s viewpoint in the creation of her own philosophy of art. Art and its significance can be appreciated by critics willing to understand the artist is in control of creating and expressing herself through
I believe art a door to a another dimension because it can put you can a zone, it can change your mood, and art has a way of expressing yourself. For example I remember the time when I had to do my chores. I was absolutely dreading washing the dishes. So, to pass time, I decided to listen to music.
The concept of “Art” is one so traditional and culturally ingrained, that it’s meaning and purpose is often simply presumed. Yet, certainly more as of late, the question has been asked, what “Art” really is. There are numerous technicalities, and fields so extensive as to be unable to ever explore every trade in Art, but what is clear is that Art stays unchanged in that it always remains an ever changing form of expression.
What is art? How can one define simply, a subject so broad, so complex, and as subjective as artistic expression? Leo Tolstoy postulates, “Art is architecture, sculpture, painting, music, poetry in all its forms…” (Tolstoy 15) I believe that although Tolstoy, may never have imagined it in his original definition, video games may certainly fit as a viable mode of artistic expression; I believe videogames are art.
To form my argument that the author of the text is correct in saying that art can be anything and that art does not come from the object, I will use the theory of
Most people see the serious and realist part of me, for that is the part that shows when I’m working or at school. The part of me that people do not see however, is the part of me that loves stories. When I am reading a book, watching a movie, listening to music, or acting on stage, I put myself in the place of the characters. This is the only time I can let myself drift into the story and imagine what I know can never really happen. These forms of art allow me to be an optimist and dream, which is the real side of me.
Arthur C. Danto in “The Artworld” provides us with the argument that, “To see something as art requires something that the eye cannot descry-an atmosphere of artistic theory, a knowledge of the history of art: an artworld.” Danto shows us the importance of the artworld in order to know that a work of art is more than just what we can plainly see. Danto provides two theories he calls the “IT” (Imitation theory) and the “RT” (Reality theory). With these two theories, Danto explains how we can define art and why “The Artworld” is needed to help understand art, because after all, “these days one might not be aware he was on artistic terrain without an artistic theory to tell him so.”
Collingwood starts his essay by answering the question of what is a work of art. According to Collingwood, art is a habitual process. To further explain the habitual process, Collingwood compares art’s habitual creation to the human’s habitual process of speech. While discussing art, he mentions that there are two theories that impose his own; however, he doesn’t believe to argue on them because it’s theorization and requires a person actually to solve it before arguing against it. However, Collingwood notes that theories have a similarity to art, and that is the process of creation.
When anyone goes downtown, they do not tend to think of it more than just buildings. In my mind, I would think of perspective, color schemes, proportion, and more art terms. My hippocampus, responsible for processing long term memory, pulls out art concepts because I have been taught to see things differently. Artists are taught to look at how things relate to each other, how they were formed, and why they were placed there. Our brains processes things the same way everyone else 's does, but we overthink everything. Luckily our body does the millions of other things we couldn 't keep track of. I was always intrigued by how these little things inside our bodies were responsible for every single thing we do and feel. Thanks to psychology, I now know why art professors always wanted to engrave so many concepts that seemed common sense at the time. Now I know that the concepts I constantly think of when making art , are things that influenced my life.
The history of art dates back to ancient times. Artwork can be, and was, found around the world. What makes art interesting is that it can be created in any way, shape or form with any materials. It seems that the artwork can also tell us a lot about the artist. Art seems to be simply, a direct, visual reflection of the artist’s life. Therefore, one can assume that an artist’s life experiences and beliefs directly influence their art. If we look at examples from different periods of art we will be able to see the connection between the artist and the art.
For over two thousand years, various philosophers have questioned the influence of art in our society. They have used abstract reasoning, human emotions, and logic to go beyond this world in the search for answers about arts' existence. For philosophers, art was not viewed for its own beauty, but rather for the question of how art and artists can help make our society more stable for the next generation. Plato, a Greek philosopher who lived during 420-348 B.C. in Athens, and Aristotle, Plato’s student who argued against his beliefs, have no exceptions to the steps they had to take in order to understand the purpose of art and artists. Though these two philosophers made marvelous discoveries about the existence of art, artists, and
One reason why I wonder is that we consider art as something we create. Making characters, their lives and their conflicts, would be an art, does not it? When we think about an artist first three topics come to mind are a painter, musician, and dancer. I get the impression that writers are further down the list of potential artists.
We are defined by our decisions and our actions, as well as our smallest choices. They build the person who we are, as well as the deaths that take our flesh away from this earth. There is no purpose of being alive that we know of. If it is it is ineffable and something that is beyond our minds. It is the smallest intricate aspects that make life worth living, and the arts give humanity a sense of purpose. The arts teach people how to think. We can choose what we think, and art can stimulate the imagination. Art can turn pain into laughter. What is my so-called embarrassment of the minimum wage jobs what people attempt to shame for working, trying to feed myself, and also to have a place to sleep at night away from the streets. With
America has always had the idea that we are great, and can do anything. If we set our minds to it we can achieve. We can advance the world in many ways. Those who make advancements want to be known for their work like anyone else who works hard striving to achieve the future today or just putting in a hard day 's work. I’m looking at works of art that show the different advancements that were made that were a change to how things were. The art is a reminder of the advancements, and how we have progressed over time throughout history to make it to where we are today doing the great things that we still strive to achieve. The art can show an image of the advancement, or something that build or changed in a way that 's related to making an advancement. Over time we want to advance to make things better. Everyone is looking to make an advancement in anyway. I believe this topic is extremely important because there are so many important advancements that have been made that can have a long lasting impact. My personal favorite is art relating to space, and the space program. I have a huge interest in space and engineering so I’m looking at the advancements of the past, which lead to modern advancements that took place to help lead us to where we are today.
