I can tell you from personal experience what "fighting words " are. These are words that are used to invoke violence or to bring on a violent situation. These words are intentional and are used to make the person they are used to towards act in a violent manner. There is a point or line or limit in everyone's behavior where they judge whether something is a threat. It's sort of a trigger word. When certain things are said or done it crosses that line and gives a negative reaction. Triggers can be anything from money to sounds. Social psychologist suggest that conflicts are often triggered by fear. The frequency and intensity of these conflicts decrease positive emotions and increase negative emotions. (Caldara, Mcbride, &Mccarter, ECT, 2017).
Provocative words or indecent words that are either harming or might bring about the listener to promptly hit back or break the peace are considered to be the part of fighting words and offensive speech. Utilization of such words is not considered as a "free speech" under the First Amendment. On the off chance that the listener is indicted for such offensive words assault, this may lead to mitigating situations (Dorf & Michael, n,d).
u. Fighting words- words that inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace.
What are words? A simple question such as this would in theory demand only a simple answer. Words, however, take such an abundance of forms that creating a truly inclusive definition for the notion of “words” is daunting. In its physical manifestation, a word is little more than air passing over taut tendons, forming sounds which are accented by flicks of the tongue against the teeth and roof of the mouth. These sounds are arranged in patterns that come to be recognized and accepted as words. But are these sounds all that words represent?—certainly not. Words command power. Although the defiant playground motto states that “sticks and stones may break bones, but words can never hurt,”
Fighting words are written or spoken words, generally expressed to incite hatred or violence from their target. Specific definitions, freedoms, and limitations of fighting words vary by jurisdiction. It is also used in a general sense of words that when uttered tend to create a verbal or physical confrontation by their mere usage.
One of the first conflicts in the film causes a bigger conflict in later years and later in the plot between the same characters. A conflict is defined as "Conflict is a fact of human life. It occurs naturally in all kinds of settings. Nations still struggle, families fracture in destructive conflicts, marriages face challenges and often fail, and the workplace is plagued with stress." in the textbook "Interpersonal Conflict" by Wilmot. Meriam-Webster defines conflict in three ways. Firstly a war, fight or battle. Secondly "competitive or opposing action of incompatibles :antagonistic state or action (as of divergent ideas, interests, or persons)" or "mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands". Lastly "the opposition of persons or forces that gives rise to the
In Chapter 2 of Thank You for Arguing by Jay Heinrichs, he discuses how to distinguish the difference between an argument and a fight, and to decide what you want out of an argument. The key point of an argument is to win over the audience to your point of view. In order to win an argument, you need to persuade them. You want your opponent to be persuaded using subtle logical tactics not power and intimidation. Using power and intimidation is the characteristics of a fight. This is when one person takes out his aggression on another, which does not persuade them but initiate’s revenge or rejection. During a fight, the key objective is to win by attacking and belittling your opponent, paying no attention to getting them to change their mind.
Inappropriate language can change the meaning of a message or something you want to say, making a negative impact on the listener which can cause distress and trouble. The case of the Fighting Words started with a man by the name of Walter Chaplinsky. A member of the Jehovah’s Witness, he was distributing literature about his religious sect on the streets of Rochestor, New Hampshire in November 1941. He began calling all organized religion “a racket” and passersby were offended by his message. As the crowd got larger, the City Marshal was called down and he warned Chaplinsky that the crowd was getting
Denotation is the primary meaning of a word. In contrast connotation is an additional idea to the primary meaning. Hitselberger dislikes the world “fighting” by it’s connotation meaning. The denotation meaning of the word “fighting” is the act of responding with violence to a conflict. In this article, there were two connotation definitions of “fighting” one is fighting against yourself due to something you dislike about who you are, not a physical fight but a mental challenge. The second meaning is fighting against what you believe is wrong. Again not physically but rather with words and actions that will change the thinking and beliefs of others to the benefit of you and/or society. Fighting is not always an act of violence, but rather it
“Sticks and stones may brake my bones, but words will never hurt me”, goes one old playground rhyme. We are usually taught to ignore a person who uses foul language, but everyone knows that words can really hurt a person. When someone uses hateful words against us, it can hurt just as much as a slap or a punch. When people start to use obscenities with ethnic or racial slurs, it can push some sensitive buttons. Racial slurs used in a joking manner leads to others using it in a condescending manner, which ultimately leads to violence and feelings of hatred. From my experience, racial slurs can cause the most extreme negative reactions in people.
but the battle has been a lot more words. Hate crimes are a serious problem in

We have all heard the phrase “sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me” on the playground or school bus ride home. The phrase was normally thrown out to bullies during a fight in the schoolyard, pushes in the hall, food thrown in the cafeteria, or during the endless teasing and taunting on bus rides to/from school.
The problem with the term “fighting words” is that they are words that provoke a person or group. Any word could provoke a certain group of people with out a person's knowledge. Should we as Americans be arrested for saying the wrong thing in front of the wrong people?
