Both Julius Caesar and Abraham Lincoln were major characters during times when their civilizations weren’t at their best. Julius Caesar helped to bring about a new age for the Roman Empire, while Lincoln united the north and south of the United States, as well as ended slavery. It is these people in history that have brought about the world that we know today. To begin, Julius Caesar was a major military power during the transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. After Caesar’s victory in Gaul, he was made dictator of the Roman Empire around 47 BCE. He was the first dictator to be awarded dictatorship for life and was so adored that his birth month, July, was renamed after him. His position as dictator bestowed upon him command of the all Roman legions and provinces, financial control, foreign policy decisions and power over the Senate. He appointed a large number of his supporters to the Senate firmly establishing his control of the Roman Empire.
During the Civil War era, Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas were two figures that changed America forever. They became two of the most influential people of their time. These two men may be the unlikeliest people to be compared together, but the thing is they have many significant similarities to each other. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th president of, the United States he was born in Hodgenville, KY in 1809 and, he was assassinated in April of 1865 Abraham Lincoln stood for rights of all people although these two men are quite different they stood for leadership and justice and equality. Julius Caesar was born on July 13 100 B.C.E. he was a politician, and a military leader Abraham Lincoln and Julius Caesar were both rulers of their country they both had made a significant impact people admired them, they were acknowledged as heroes of their countries. Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass were brave, heroic men who spoke out for freedom and liberty. They were impactful to society not only in their generation but every generation after them. For instance, Lincoln was the key to the door when it came to preserving the union during the Civil War. He really gave the people a reason not to give up, and that the future will be better. “He is dead but the cause he so ardently loved… represented and defended- not for himself only, not for us only, but for all people in their coming generation till shall be no more- that cause survives his fall, and will survive it” (SB, pg 68). Thomas Jefferson was campaigning for the seperation of Church and State, which supposedly was to keep the government from illegally restricting the religious rights of the people. However, many viewed the seperation as a way for the government to gain power, which would actually limit religious freedom (Jacobson par7). So Jefferson made some mistakes. He passed a law and a bunch of people got mad. Seems pretty bad, right? Not compared to Abraham Lincoln. Although his intentions were pure, Lincoln ended up being a direct fuse for the bloodiest fight in American history, the Civil War. Even though he was extremely unpopular, being in possession of the wealth he was, he was able to buy his way through the senate to the height of power. Caesar had majestically rose to power, partaking in every major position there was, using his political ingenious in his attempt to gain full control of Rome. After Crassus had died in battle, and Caesars’ army defeated and killed Pompey, he was quick to mop up all his opposition from the senate and the oligarchs across the Mediterranean and throughout Rome, in his first step to his dictatorship, his dictatorship being the final step to the republics decline. After defeating all of his enemies, Julius Caesar was granted a 10-year dictatorship for purposes of restoring the republic, similar to the title that Sulla had granted himself many years previous. However he constituted himself as the Divine King or Ruler of Rome, essentially a REX, yet as said before, since the founding of the Republic, the Romans prided themselves on freedom from the Etruscan King, and just the term ‘King’ went against the republic mentality. Eventually killed in plot involving over 60 senators, the death of Caesar concluded the decline of the Republic.
