I tried to convince myself that I want to go to college because it will make me a better person; that somehow, as a result of being college educated I will be able to have a larger or better impact on the world. It might be true. Maybe I will have a chance, that I wouldn’t have without a college degree at a job that would allow me to make significant change. Maybe, during college, I’ll become a better person by gaining a more complete understanding of the world. I don’t necessarily expect either of these things. I decided educating myself and learning how to think may be selfish, but also productive. I know educating myself is a moral thing to do the same way I know hiking through a forest is a moral thing to do. By walking through the woods …show more content…
I was raised with the ideal of land stewardship by my parents, who for 30 years have organically and sustainably produced a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as cows, sheep, and chickens. They saw that the way most people stay alive in America is unsustainable and they found a way to live largely outside the exploitive economy while remaining a part of the community. As a result growing up in the west as part of a family that cares about the wild, I have observed the effects of climate change my whole life. I believe that humans are part of nature and that we are hurting ourselves by continuing to pollute and exploit the natural world. I’m curious about the effects of our actions’ on on other parts of the world and the future. I wonder if my parents are right to believe that environmental problems and societal problems are caused by the same exploitative and unsustainable behavior and that they are too often separated when people discuss them. The LAS program would allow me to examine issues like these and their possible interconnections both through different points of view and different …show more content…
I want to have the option to buy from local shops , and enjoy the city on a bike. Freiburg Germany seems ideal. It is known for its sustainability and history, and, like my home in Montana, it is near the wilderness. The University seems to reflect its aged picturesque city. I like that at UCF I would be a part of a small group within a larger University. I see it, somewhat romantically, as a place where people go to talk about the world, science and thought because that is what makes them happy. In a place like this, the diversity of perspectives will present me with endless opportunities to both challenge and improve my own ways of thinking. Studying German and other languages is another such opportunity. One that would allow me to both see the word in new ways and gain a deeper understanding of cultures in Europe and worldwide. It would also improve my ability explore centuries of German thought, and feel more connected to my community in
I’m raised in an environment filled with negative stereotypes, high dropout rates, fewer resources, and low expectations. As a Mexican American from the San Fernando Valley, educational opportunities do not come often. In middle school it massed into my head that going to college is my way towards success. Soon it became the only option for me and as a result, I joined Project Grad to begin my journey towards college. They introduced me to the Chicano Youth Leadership Conference during my junior year. After applying and attending, the conference eliminated the label that Latinos are not college material. Subsequently, I grabbed as many opportunities as I could. In my junior my school did not put me in any AP classes. Therefore, I went to go
There are multiple reasons why someone may want to go to college. Whether it’s to pursue their dreams or prove people wrong. I want to go to college because I want to pursue my dream of majoring in mathematics, math is a passion of mine. I can not say fully what I want to do with my life or when I will find out, but I do know that math is something I want to continue studying. Being Hispanic does not give me a good advantage when it comes to colleges, I have to make sure my voice is heard. What is even more complicated is being a first generation college student, my family really can not help because my parents did not go to college. I have to set the example for my younger brother because he is also going to be a first generation college student
After four years of high school, there is only one goal I have in mind. That goal is to attend college. This is the next big step in my life. All the late nights I stayed up to complete school assignment was for this moment. All my hard work was has lead me to this point in life. College will open a whole new to me. A world where I can meet new people while working to improve my future. Why do I want to attend college though? Well I have three specific reasons for this decision.
I believe that college is the right choice for me. I’ve grown up looking forward to advancing my education and creating a foundation for a future career. Both of my parents are college graduates and ingrained in me from a young age that college is the path to success. My aunts, uncles, and cousins are also highly successful after completing college. All the adults that make an impact in my life have gone to college, and I believe if I continue advancing my education I will turn out extremely successful.
My parents think of themselves as primarily self-sufficient. Because of this, we live on the peak of a hill in the middle of nowhere, far away from the hustle and bustle of our old home in the city. Although this is their ideal life, they realized that it may prevent me from expanding my own horizons. They have always encouraged me to follow my interests, even when it meant moving away from home at sixteen to go to college. Throughout my entire childhood, they have done everything in their power to ensure that I am prepared for the future. I believe that my parents have crafted me into a well-rounded individual by proving to me that any person can define their own version of success.
In the article, “What Is College For? (Part 2)” written by Gary Gutting we see a description of his ideal vision to improve education and the intellectual culture of our citizens. Mr. Gutting emphasizes that preparing students for employment should be the job of the elementary, middle and high school rather than college. He argues that higher education is basically unnecessary for the practice of many professions.
After high school students have the opportunity to attend a college. Today, it seems like fewer people go to college. People will say “It’s too expensive or I don’t have the time” however that's just not the case, in my opinion, college is worth it because if someone is seeking a long-term job with security, mobility, and pay increase must attend college. Having the degree is better than not having one at all.
There might be a time where people ask you, “why are you in college” or “why to decide to go to college.” People might reply by saying that they want a degree, that they want a higher paying job, or they need that for a future career that they are pursuing. Those responses are the most typical reason of why people go to college. Sure you can say that having a degree means that a person can get a better job with better pay rather than working in the manual labor fields with minimum pay. A college degree is the fundamental stepping stone to the future, it lays the foundation of where to start. College is everything to me; I’m in college so I’m able to unlock more potential in myself, to be able to make my mother proud with everything that she has done and hopefully becoming the first.
I live in an impoverished town, with a 40% increase this year in opioid deaths, where the education system pumps under-educated teens onto the streets they came from, with no chance of a job. Many parents and adults do not care, know, or understand the value of a college education.
I am fortunate enough to have parents that can afford to send me to college, and support my choice to pursue a higher education. By attending college, I will eventually graduate with a degree and later earn a high paying career. Along with this, I have found college to be a way to discovering who I am. I have been able to move out, take over my own bills, and earn responsibility by doing so. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to attend college. Financial reasons typically hold individuals back from attending universities, and that later may affect their lives. Although I attend class daily, the true effect college will have on me in the future goes unnoticed. An education is something that is highly valued, and so important. Everyone should have the chance to have an education, but unfortunately, it does not happen. College for me, is a privilege. Therefore, I will work hard to earn my degree, and later put it to
Is college really worth it, is a question that many people are asking themselves when thinking about their future. College is very expensive, though is worth it because there are many benefits to getting a college education. Most people who are against college do not understand what it can do for the next generation. College is very much worth it for the education, for the experience and also for the money.
About two thirds of student are graduating from Colleges and Universities with some level of debt. The level of debt they have sometimes overwhelmed them and sometimes they have no choice but to just drop out. At one point college is not worth it. It may only be worth it when you have a plan and you are financially stable and can afford the tuition every year. The majority of students that attend college are low income students and are not financially stable.
A college education gives a person the opportunity to be successful in life, either financially or morally dependent on the goals that they set for their life. They will choose a college that offer programs for the major of their choice, where they will specialize and receive a degree. The decision to pursue a higher education will give the opportunity to earn a better income over someone who does not have a degree. College is more of life preparation course that will help make sure a successful career. If a person pursues a career in engineering, physics or mathematics their curriculum would include more liberal art preparation courses, in order for them to earn their degree, so someone pursuing a degree in these types of careers are
For many, after graduating high school the next big step is college. I never asked myself why or if I even wanted to. Yet, since I was not yet ready to join the work force, and didn’t want to disappoint my parents, I simply followed the path that I was supposed to take. For a while I had no direction, but through the loss of my high school English teacher and my dream of making my family proud, I discovered that college was the place I wanted and needed to be.
What has my journey to graduation been like for me? My journey has been a crazy, fun-filled learning adventure. I met many goals and accomplishments I set for myself but I also faced some challenges on the way. For example, I finally met my goal of graduating with a 4.6 GPA and maintaining it. Also, I accomplished completing my last four years of grade school and now I am on the way to college. My last year has been interesting and there are many goals, accomplishments and challenges I can reflect on.
