Question 10: Even though the first part of the novel starts twenty years after Pi’s ordeal at sea and ends with the words “This story has a happy ending,” I disagree and I believe Life of Pi does not have a happy ending. Through attention to detail and imagery, the reader can see what Pi has been through, and the struggle that has taken place. One can not forget this or the tragedy of the story. Pi lost everything he owned and his family. He had lost his innocence in a horrible abrupt way. Pi didn’t even get to enjoy his childhood, almost a year of his life was drastically altered which changed his life forever. He also witnessed many awful things like death and violence while stuck on the lifeboat. In my opinion, the ending to the Life
Life of Pi by Yann Martel is a story about a 16 year old boy who does not lose hope after the cargo ship he and his family had been traveling on sank. During his 277 day journey lost at sea, Piscine Molitor Patel (known as Pi) was faced with extreme circumstances and had to overcome many challenges. Staying hydrated, finding food and adapting to the harsh weather conditions in the ocean was nothing compared to the challenge of being on board with a Bengal Tiger, also known as Richard Parker. Faith, survival and the will to survive are among the many themes found in this book. Faith seemed to have played a major role in helping Pi to survive. On page 148, his faith in God helped him to stay strong and helped him realize that it was a miracle
This setting is the cause of Pi’s development of primitive instincts because it is associated with chaos and a battle with the environment. The lifeboat is floating in a barren body of water that has a lonely atmosphere, which helps portray Pi’s need to be independent. To tame the survival instincts inside of him, Pi needs to rely on his own decisions and logic. Because Richard Parker’s territory is within the lifeboat, the lifeboat represents the origin of Pi’s savagery; therefore, it’s atmosphere is tense and overpowering. The action of the passage occurs in the lifeboat because Pi needs to tame his inner tiger in the same setting where it was born. Pi discusses that he spends more time in the lifeboat after his confrontation with his brute behaviour. The raft allowed Pi to hide from his developing instincts, but now that he has tamed his savagery, he can live along side it in the
In Life of Pi, the author Yann Martel utilizes symbolism throughout the novel to illustrate the adaptive path one goes through to cope with conflict; succumbing to a lower morale, seeking hope through religion, and self conformity.
“Without Richard Parker, I wouldn’t be alive today to tell you my story.” The significance of this quote is that the presence of Richard saves him from the effects of loneliness. “The lower you are, the higher your mind will soar.” This quote is important because when Pi is at his lowest point, he reaches for his only remaining sources of salvation, which is his faith and imagination. “Life on a lifeboat isn’t much of a life. It is like an end game in chess, a game with few pieces. The element couldn’t be more simple, or the stake higher.” The quote significance is that the few that survive the ship are force to face each other in a strategic battle of wits to see who will
Pi’s life before the boat crashing was full of hope and wonder. His presence was ethereal, making a purpose out of everything around him. His family ran a zoo, which gave him a tight-knit relationship with animals. Pi loved to try new things. He met new people which led to his exploration
1. The main characters in Life of Pi are Piscine Molitor Patel (Pi) and Richard Parker the Bengal tiger. Pi is the protagonist he is hopeful and believes that things get better. He is very optimistic which gets him through a lot of his troubles. In the beginning of the book Pi seemed to have things the rough way and continues that way but he was very hopeful. In the beginning of his lifeboat journey he was sure things would get better but as time went by he wasn't sure anymore but he had things to remind him to keep going. I also think he became more grownup and stronger by the end of the book. Richard Parker is the tiger on the lifeboat with Pi he is there every step of the way with Pi. He helps Pi get through things. Richard Parker is very
-The author meets Pi’s two children and declares Pi’s story has a happy ending. Part 2: - Pi finds himself on the lifeboat, and tries to rescue Richard Parker before he realizes the danger of having a tiger on board. HE doesn’t realize that despite the danger, Parker saves him from the other animals. - The narrator returns to the night of the official sinking and tells the story of how Pi was able to escape the boat alive.
The will to live is a strong urge of survival that occurs when one’s life is threatened. The novel and film Life of Pi is about a boy named Piscine Molitor Patel who is lost in the middle of the Pacific Ocean due to a shipwreck with a 450 pound Bengal Tiger. The theme that fits the novel and film the best is the will to live. The novel and film effectively prove the theme by using symbols to portray how badly Pi wants to live. Characterization also plays an important role in proving the theme as the novel and book show how Pi and his tiger have to change themselves to live. Cinematic techniques such as different types of camera angles are used as well to prove that the will to live is the essential theme in the film. In the novel, Yann Martel shows how the camera angles prove what they prove. The film and novel Life of Pi effectively capture the theme of the will to live by the effective use of symbolism, characterization, and cinematic techniques.

My mind could hardly conceive it. It was as unbelievable as the moon catching fire” (Martel, page 103) This quote shows how extreme Pi’s fear and surprise was as he was watching the ship sink. In this case Pi’s fear may be what saved him because instead of swimming through the shark infested water and risk drowning to save his family, he observes the shipwreck. “In less than twenty minutes, a ship of three-hundred thousand tons became a speck on the horizon” (Martel, page 236) Pi believed that with this ship came salvation, but instead it was as if he wasn’t even there.
When in a threatening situation, life is one thing that will cross a person’s mind because that is what they are fighting for. In life there are many challenges and within those challenges life lessons. These challenges show the true character within a person. Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, is a story about a young boy named Pi who finds himself stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger. Pi must survive both nature and the tiger on board.
Pi battles death so much in the story, the relationship he has with it becomes extremely intricate. It seems as though by the end of the novel Pi could have easily dated death.
“You might think I lost hope at that point. I did. And as a result I perked up and felt much better.” At several points in my life, I have reached a point at which I lost all hope. I lost my energy and determination, but from that negative energy came a light to guide me in the right direction. When we realize we are in a dark place, it motivates us to try to escape it. This dark place can lead to the best creation and some of the greatest levels of accomplishment in life. When I lost the first art contest I entered, I thought I was a failure, unable to create anything worth looking at. However, some of my best work came after that instance. In friendship the same applies. My best friend had been using me all my life,
Life without meaning brings no hope. Life without hope brings no faith. If you have both it will lead you into the future. (statusmind.com) Pi had hope that allowed him to survive the journey but not all the time, he has lost it a few times when he thought he was going to be eaten by the tiger but it was his morals and his faith that keeps him going. Hope plays a big role in everyone's life. Hope is the belief of what could possibly be and Pi is not sure that he is going to make it out of the sea alive but it gets him to keep pushing when he feels like he is dying or that death is near.
