Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on September 24, 1896. He is famous for many short stories, many taking place during the Jazz Age and one specifically is “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (Bruccoli 1). It is a work on which a baby is born an old man and ages backwards. Fitzgerald wrote that he was inspired to write it by a remark made by Mark Twain: “It is a pity that the best part of life comes at the beginning, and the worst part at the end” (Lanham 1). In this short story no one attempts to discover the reason for Benjamin’s condition or find a cure. Throughout his life he battles society and the social norms of the world. The Button baby is born in 1860, at a time when most children were born at home. Fitzgerald starts off the short story by saying, “I shall tell …show more content…
Button goes out to buy clothing for Benjamin who he still has not named and calls him “Methuselah” which is the longest-lived man in the bible (Lean 1). It says “But a frantic inspection of the boys’ department revealed no suits to fit the new-born Button. He blamed the store, of course – in such cases it is the thing to blame the store” (Fitzgerald 7). He acted as if the store clerk that helped him find the boys section knew his “shameful secret”. Not acting as Mr. Button pleases at home, he will not except any warm milk and will not play with his toy rattle. Benjamin is obviously not your typical baby, not that long after he is born he starts to sneak his father’s Havana cigars and reads the encyclopedia. His father tries setting him up on play dates, which he does not like. Benjamin best friend for the beginning part of his life is his grand father because no one else would talk to him. His parents try sending him to kindergarten and he is kicked out for he keeps falling asleep. Ultimately no matter how hard Mr. Button believes his son is normal which he is not and has fatuous “silent agreement with himself to believe in his son’s normality” (Fitzgerald
Individuals perpetuate false personas to such an extent that they are convinced into a state of false consciousness of reaching the American dream, ultimately, this facade leads them to their downfall, exposing repressed reality from idealistic lies. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald utilizes symbols to describe the hollow nature of each character’s deceitful persona, which comes to show the ultimate theme of downfall through the individual’s perception of the American dream. The use of gold as a mask for the colour yellow represents authentic wealth versus fake wealth, further developed though Jay Gatsby’s pursuance of the American dream. The colour white known for is purity and simplicity is denoted by Daisy Buchanan, a character who represses the reality in which she lives, insinuated by her change in surroundings. Furthermore, the character of Myrtle Wilson, showcases her greed for wealth and her need of a rich-husband as an American dream, symbolized by the surrounding colour of grey, a representation of her veneer-rich persona.
In the beginning scene when his father enters the room, the camera continues to focus on Benjamin while his father’s image is blurred sitting in front of Benjamin and blocking most of his face. His mother later enters the room and stands in front of the camera completely obscuring Benjamin. These scenes shows that his parents are constantly getting in Benjamin’s way of his feelings and he cannot see past the image of his parent identity like he is destine to become them. Although he tells his father that he wants to be “different”, Benjamin does not have control of his own life. When Benjamin does not want to come down to see the guests and he “needs to be alone for a while” because he is ‘worried about his future’ his parent does not even care a bit and insist that he goes down stair because they are eager to show him to the guest. As he head toward the steps, there was portrait of a clown at the top of the stairs symbolizing that he is headed to a social circus as if he was in a costume putting on an act like they are show casing him for entertainment and no one takes him seriously.

In life everyone strives to get rich, but is having an abundance of money always good? Sometimes people use money for personal benefits, sometimes it's for the benefit of others, but at times people with money use it to create their social status. In The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the idea of wealth is seen throughout. Jay Gatsby, who lives next door to Nick Carraway; the Narrator of the story, wants to be with his dream girl Daisy. Gatsby is wealthy and throws parties to impress Daisy. Daisy however, is married to another man Tom Buchanan. Throughout the story the people with money use it to create their social status. In The Great Gatsby F.Scott Fitzgerald uses symbolism to convey, wealth causes people to assert
F. Scott Fitzgerald, a St. Paul, Minnesota native, was born on September 24, 1896. His father, Edward Fitzgerald, had co-written a novel in his youth and often read works by Edgar Allen Poe and Lord George Gordon Byron to Scott during his childhood. While Fitzgerald’s father praised his literary attempts, both of his parents encouraged him to pursue other career paths. Nevertheless, Fitzgerald was steadfast in his literary endeavors, writing for both his high school and college newspapers. He later dropped out of Princeton University in order to join the army and continued to pursue writing, penning both magazine articles and musical lyrics (Adams 10-11).
People in America love to have a great deal of money. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby always wants to have money, and he finally gets it. Gatsby has parties to try to get Daisy to come to his house. Gatsby tell Nick to tell Daisy to come to Nick’s house without her husband. Gatsby finallys shows his big house off to Daisy and thinks he will win her love back again just because he has money. Gatsby’s plan do not work out. Fitzgerald uses symbols in The Great Gatsby to show how things are going wrong in America.
The book The Great Gatsby is written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, it’s a narrative told from the perspective of Nick Carraway. He tells the story of the tragic life of Jay Gatsby and talks about the society of the wealthy people with high social status. He talks about the conflict between the two huge power Tom and Gatsby, due to their similarity in their money and social status, while they compete for dominance and masculinity by fighting over Daisy. Through Nick’s narration and his close relationship with Gatsby, the readers realize that the motive behind everything that Gatsby does is to win back Daisy’s heart to repeat the past, the first time when he fell in love with Daisy.
The events in the novel play out in the fictional town of West Egg in 1922. The Roaring Twenties, or the Jazz Age of America is portrayed by Fitzgerald. Social ferment, idealism, resistance to change, and decadence are dealt with in the novel. The novel sounds a warning to the believers of the ‘American Dream’.
We would define symbol as "an object that represents an idea" and an idea is not physical. In the first part last, there are many symbols that represent coming of age. For my first example, there is a red balloon in the first chapter given to the main character, Bobby, by his girlfriend, Nia. The red balloon represents coming of age because balloons are associated with toddlers or young children, also showing how nia is pregnant. It is sort of ironic because Bobby is sixteen, showing that he's has grown out of liking balloons unlike the associated age group
Identity typically changes with age, however he changes very little because he does not have full awareness of his identity. “Age identity refers to the inner most experience of a person’s age and aging process” (Jose 2017). Fitzgerald emphasizes Benjamin’s loss of consciousness more in the novel than Fincher does in the film. At a certain point, Benjamin stops struggling to determine who he is and just essentially waits for time to run out. He would play simply games with his grandson when they are both around the age of children beginning kindergarten. Benjamin and his grandson would continue this until he passed away. In contrast, it seems that Benjamin and his wife fight further to the end in the film, and he passes away with her by his side. The relationship between Benjamin and Daisy was stronger in the film than in the novel. His identity is very important to him in the middle of his life when he wants to go to college and enroll in the war, but towards the end he loses awareness of any self-perception he had built and slips into
In the 1920’s prohibition and the Jazz age played a huge influence on the later writings written by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald or known as F. Scott Fitzgerald. An American Novelist F. He began a career in writing novels. His first novel published was “This Side of Paradise” where he got glowing reviews. He wrote The Great Gatsby, but it did not become famous until a few years later. It was not hard for Fitzgerald to write The Great Gatsby due to his personal experiences, including his love life with Zelda, places he lived, and
Born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (more commonly known as F. Scott Fitzgerald) became widely known as one of the greatest American authors. Fitzgerald wrote both novels and short stories, mainly set in the Jazz age. Many influences to his writing came from his own personal life and the world he saw around him. The short story, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, written in 1922 by author F. Scott Fitzgerald, does a very good job at showing its audience, the genius loci of Baltimore, Maryland without utilizing many physical descriptions pertaining to the setting. The text instead focuses on social and personal factors that shape a community in order to create the persona behind genius loci.
