What Does The Dark Wood Symbolize Dante's Inferno

We as humans often sin in our everyday lives. The journey to overcome these sins is long and grueling just like it was for Dante. Dante’s Dark Wood of Error represents not only the immorality of the world through which each of us must venture, but also the vulnerability we exhibit to the temptations of this world. In the Inferno, the Dark Wood serves as the path of sin and darkness we must venture through. Dante who exemplifies naiveness and curiosity is overpowered by the She-Wolf who represents the source of all the sin in the world. We also can see that the sin that lies within the wood is very dark and deceiving, so much so that it fills Dante with fear at first sight. Secondly, The Dark Wood which Dante must venture through represents the path of sin not only Dante must travel through, but also us in our everyday lives. “So bitter is it, death is little more; But of the good to treat, which there I found, speak will I of the other things I saw there.” (Dante 7-9) Dante describes the wood as being so dreadful that it is barely surpassing death.
