What is a mass murder? According to the FBI “mass murder was described as a number of murders (four or more) occurring during the same incident, with no distinctive time period between the murders. These events typically involved a single location, where the killer murdered a number of victims in an ongoing incident”(n/a, 2010). Anthony Sowell became a well-known serial killer in East Cleveland after his case became over publicized by media. Sowell was raised in a dysfunctional family, but after a failed attempted to escape he returned to old habits. Sowell lived a complicated life in a poverty-stricken time.

In 1990 Sowell was sentenced to 15 years in prison for kidnapping, rape and attempted rape. His victim was a three-month pregnant lady who went and entered Sowell’s home willingly. It was not until when she tried to leave that he became violent. She reports that he bonded her hand and gagged her with a rag. He was released in 2005 and was considered to have a low-risk to offend. He began dating Cleveland’s Mayor 's niece, Lori Frazier. Some sources say it 's believed that Frazier was living with up until sometime in 2008, but per Frazier, she moved out in 2007. She lived him with and remembered noticing a horrible stench, but had been told it was a family member who also lived in the house, then after they moved out was told it was from the sausage factory right next door to Sowell’s house.
Between mid-2007 to mid-2009 at a string of women went missing from the East Cleveland. Sowell’s first victim Crystal Dozier is believed to have been killed in May or June of 2007. One year later in 2008, he killed Tishana Culver and four other women. One of his victims could get away and flag down the police, with a police warrant Sowell was arrested and taken to jail.
