What Is Chivalry

In two stories there is a code that knights follow. Chivalry is the code that they follow. The code says that a knight should be a brave warrior, a good christian, and selflessly fighting for justice. The knights are supposed to fight for their king and queen. In the stories Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and from Morte d’Arthur they show the idea about chivalry.

There are many misunderstandings with the word chivalry, one of them being that the knight never actually swore an oath of chivalry until later in the middle ages. Chivalry was a word that was created by French-speaking English nobility, during the medieval period. The word originates from the French word cheval meaning horse, and the French word Knecht meant knight, by putting the two words together, we get the word chevalier which meant horseman.      An act of chivalry is described as the qualifications or character of the ideal knight. Knights were expected to uphold this code of conduct. In the English literature Le Morte d?Arthur, French for ?The Death of Arthur?, by Sir Thomas Malory, the characters display acts of chivalry from beginning to end. Though the code of chivalry contains many qualities or acts, nevertheless bravery, loyalty, and courtly love are demonstrated more throughout this literature.

Chivalry is the type of thing that would be great to have in our society but I don’t believe that it exists too much anymore in the world today. Let me break down here some of the chivalry rules compared with the actions of the people of the current world.

My personal code of chivalry is to stand up for those who can not stand up for themselves. Those who are less fortunate, mentally challenged, and or physically disabled. I was raised in a house where you respect and stand up for anyone in need. Being a bully was not tolerated in my house, being a friend to all was expected by my parents. My mom told me at a young age “everyone understands a smile”, whether they speak the same language, have a handicap, or are considered an outcast. A smile can go a long way, and make anyone feel included.

When asked to think of the word “chivalry” and the chivalric code, what is the first thing which comes to mind? Many would visualize the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. Most people overlook that chivalry was a code of conduct, designed specifically for the hierarchical order of society and difficult lifestyle during medieval times. The code of conduct included many ideals such as courage, honor, and protecting the weak and was followed by the knights; it also helped control the warrior class by imposing such strict expectations, ensuring they won’t violently turn on those they are assigned to protect. Chivalry played a very important role in the medieval time period.

One of the main elements of chivalry is bravery, in the story we read Beowulf's last Battle, an example of braver was ,”He could see how his king was suffering … Wiglaf mind was made up ; he raised his yellow shield and drew his sword.” in the story Wiglaf went back to help his king fight, that showed bravery. An example of bravery today is people going/volunteer in the military and army. That shows bravery because, you're sacrificing your life for other and your country.

The Code of chivalry is still alive because many men put their country first and themselves second. For instance, for men fighting for the country who are in the military. It takes a lot of courage to go [into battle] knowing that you may not return home. They have families, friends, and even pets that they are leaving behind to fight for their country. That takes a lot of guts because I can not leave my love ones behind and go off to the war by myself.

Gender equality is promoted for women's self-esteem and universal recognition, but in the process of respecting each other in the society, chivalry is also a right which men choose to perform. Chivalry is a promotion of gender equality due to the basis that men are polite and supportive to women. If women as independent human beings who have the rights to function the same as men in the society, men should have the same rights. Chivalry is men's behavior and conduct, and their choices represent gender equality as well. If men offer to carry heavy bags or hold the door for women, most women would feel pleased due to the respects they receive. However, some might argues that men who offer helps to women are offending them and hurting their dignity

In all honesty, I never expected the topic of chivalry to come up during a lunch conversation. The discussion began when Alvaro grabbed Britney’s chemistry textbook as well as Lucia’s binder, later he moved it to grab my chemistry textbook, but I said no. In the code of knights, chivalry also has another meaning—being honorable and helpful in any way possible to a lady. When Sir Gawain first meets Lady Bertilak, the wife of Sir Bertilak, he says: “Good lady, I am Sir Gawain. Let me be your knight. Allow me to serve you.” Lady Bertilak is pleased by Sir Gawain’s chivalry and is very polite and open towards him from then on.

Now days, women want to be exact equals as men with absolutely no differences in treatment or responsibilities. Women today strive to be equal to men, and that simple acts of chivalry should not only correspond to women, but to men also, and that all rights and responsibilities

In this modern ages time Chivalry is dead. Chivalry is defined as the medieval knightly system with its religious, moral, and social code. In today’s time the moral and social codes that were demanded back then are not now. With so many standing up to be equal and to live in whatever way they see fit,there is no place for chivalry . Even something as simple as holding a door open for a women can be misconstrued as being disrespectful. How does chivalry affect feminism? It`s grown to be said that this relates back to men being raised in single parent households, no male figure to teach them how to treat a lady. On the other hand it’s controversial because if you were raised by a female how come you weren’t taught how to treat a lady being as though you were raised by one. In today’s society chivalry is dead. Young men do not have a good role model. A male father figure is supposed to teach their son to hold a door when a female is coming, getting out the car first to open her door on dates, pulling out the chair when she is ready to sit down, and also giving up the seat on a crowded bus. This relates to chivalry because you as a woman would you hold the door for a male as he enters a building behind you. Most people naturally hold the door because it’s the polite thing to do. Chivalry became a contradiction because if were getting rid of gender roles then chivalry where does come into play. It’s hard when a woman want to be still treated like a queen while having males becoming easily influenced by what they see on television for instance.
