In Trimble’s Writing with Style: Conversations on the Art of Writing, there are two requirements when he reads an article or story, specifically in his second requirement he states, “He not waste my time getting out what he has to say” (Trimble Pg. 58) When writing a short story, adding unnecessary words and phrases can have the reader lose interest and stop reading. Short stories are stories told minimally without a lot of add-on. If you are inconsistent with your pace, and drag on, you tend to lose your audience on what you are writing. Coming from this, a writer’s way of pacing are essential for creating a well written and compelling short story. In the first two paragraphs of Rick Reilly’s Four of a Kind, he opens his story in …show more content…
Reilly creates a connection between the reader and the people who are on the plane, by remarking on who these people are and what they have done. For example, Reilly puts, “One was publicist Mark Bingham, 31, who helped Cal win the 1991 and ’93 national collegiate rugby championship.”(Reilly). This tells us about Mark Bingham, and events that he took place in, while not going into detail on the rugby championship, or how he won the championships. Reilly does this with a few people giving background information, so that we can relate, and understand them. After this, Reilly transitions to a sentimental way of writing, by explaining the calls the passengers on the plane had to make. Calling parents, and a 12-week old daughter to say goodbye to them, makes you feel for the passengers and the position they are in, making you care for them even more. The pacing takes a steep turn as the subject is brought back inside the plane, and people figuring out other planes have been hijacked and that this plane was heading towards Washington. This shows that the events inside the plane happened quickly, and Reilly gets straight to the point on determining what happened. Coming from this, the next two paragraphs which also have 4 sentences, determine the outcome of the people and the plane, which show the pace of the author. Reilly put in the short story,
Furthermore, O’Brien describes this jumbo jet as if it is a real bird. He explains its appearance as “a big sleek silver bird with feathers and talons high and screeching”, to explain the beauty of this plane. He uses imagery to emphasize the significance the freedom birds has on them. O’Brien gives a clear picture to allow readers to understand that even with their emotional baggage, they still have hope that they will one day be happy
The short story consists of both short sentences and long sentences. The sentences are short when something dramatic happens and the short sentences make it more dramatic and interesting to read
In his work ‘The Sign of Four’, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, illustrates how the want and shallowness of wealth can create destruction. The chest full of gems and jewels intrigues everyone it comes across, causing the death of three men. Both Major Sholto and Bartholomew Sholto are both murdered by burglars, affecting the life of Thaddeus Sholto forever. Tonga, an assassin, is also killed in the retrieving of the treasure. The lives of these men and the people around them have forever been affected by greed. When Jonathan Small is arrested for his crimes he dumps the treasure into the river. He was overcome by hunger for wealth and screams out that “if [he] can’t have the loot [he’ll] take darned good care that no one else does” (Doyle, 113). Smalls could not accept anyone else having the treasure, leading him to jail where he will be for life. The thought of indulging themselves in jewels clouded the thoughts of these men, forever ruining their future.
The main character of this story is named “Robbie McWilliams”. He is seventeen years old who likes to study about planes and he is a very smart character. He’s tricky and can fool people very easily. He is also able to learn fast and is caring. For example, when they had to get their pilot's license, he volunteered to go first and quickly earned his license. When one of his friend’s head got shot, he felt nervous and distracted and even tried to get him to live. Robbie looked short as a seventeen- year-old because his dad grew in his 20 years of age. He was also the
The play opens with a flight attendant demonstrating the airplane precautions, safety procedures and reminding passengers to fasten their seat belts and to turn off all cellular devices. Before each new airline scene played, the film displays the name of the flight, location of trying to land, and number of passengers and crew members that were on the flight. To present danger within
Writers that take an extensive amount of time describing details often disrupt the fluidity of the story they are trying to tell, and cause the reader to become disinterested due to the fact that he or she "lost sight of his priority" as King mentions. I am conscience of the speed at which the story is being told, and can often "get bored" of a piece of writing if the writer's decision of over explaining everything slows down the telling of the actual story. A reader can learn from reading such material "to keep the ball rolling", and to avoid getting caught up in describing unnecessary details. Anything that strays away from the actual story and slows down its speed causes the reader to become disinterested and conscience of "the craft."
The author uses pacing throughout the story to help the reader connect to the story. In the story
Something incredibly hard that every child needs to experience is telling their parents that they are really interested in pursuing something. Even if their parents are against the decision of the child, both parent and child need to know the differing viewpoints of the other person involved.
The author writes the story in a very interesting way. The way that there are only a few descriptions scattered about and that it focuses on dialogue is what allows us to figure out what the characters are speaking about and to find the intentions behind their words. The subject of this short narrative stands out boldly. Though it was written in

The story starts off with Thomas recalling the night of the accident, this is a good opener it pulls the reader in and peaks their curiosity. It hits the pathos appeal hard because she is pulling us in, to find out what happened to her husband and how it affected her. As we read
Carroll’s approach to writing in this essay is that of a story teller. He is narrating his conscious thought on what happened and how it impacted his life. The style of short, factual statements are not the normal approach to writing. Carroll fills the essay with sentence fragments, but it works for his style. If you heard this being audibly narrated however, it would stand out to you maybe more than the written word. His approach conveys the unusual circumstances, the feeling of being stuck, and the desire for something new in a way that would be difficult to achieve otherwise. You can begin to feel the angst of the author even though he does not follow the normal flow of writing. Carroll also jumps from one part to the next segment abruptly.
Monson does this for a thematic reason of the instructional format to stand out as more of a stream of conscious and technically to create a constant flow that creates a specific pace for the readers to examine each sentence carefully and by reading the next sentence able to make a distinction between the two. The further you read the more the short story teaches you how to read itself, a similar talent seen in novels like
Some stories take what feels like forever to finally begin. A lengthy introduction, extra details or seemingly useless dialogue can make readers skip over what seems like a false beginning to a good story. But think about this: what if those seemingly lengthy, extra, useless words were actually important? For example, the opening 115 lines of William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice are provide minimal support to the story at first glance. In these lines, Antonio and his friends are discussing the dynamics of happiness and sadness in order to find the root of Antonio’s sad mood. This portion of the play gives background information about Antonio’s ships which becomes relevant when Bassanio needs his help later, but other than that the
There are so many different things one can learn from reading a story. Stories vary in length but it seems that your appetite for reading will gauge the kind of stories you elect to read. People who enjoy long thought out complex reading will enjoy much longer published works than what a short story has to offer. However there is a large population in the world of people who do not want to spend days on end reading a novel that is several hundred pages long and takes days to convey a simple message. In fact, many people want just the opposite in their reading. Many readers want a story that is short, sweet, and to the point. Something that they don’t need to spend hours or weeks on end reading but instead can get the exact same message or meaning from instead of having to spend a ridiculous amount of time reading a much larger work. Authors often want readers use the Formalist approach when reading these short stories as authors use words to convey the same message or meaning in less text than a much longer published work with hundreds of pages, it does this by using the text itself as a canvas for creativity. The Formalist approach is a great tool when it comes to writing short stories, and its use in Good Country People by Flannery O’Connor is classic example of how the Formalist Approach can be so effective in such a short story. Authors are incredibly
