Police Brutality: Use of Excessive Force What is police brutality? It is an act of misbehaviour done by a policeman or any member of the law enforcement through the use of a great amount of force to physically, mentally, or emotionally attack an innocent citizen. Many law enforcement officers, who have sworn to protect and serve, have abused their rights and authority to assault and manipulate citizens, even if they were innocent. Citizens who have been attacked have been left with physical and emotional scars that can never go away; in some cases, it has even caused death. In a report in 2015, 247 deaths were said to be caused by police brutality Many people believe that having evidence in a criminal case would be a guarantee that the one being convicted would be found guilty. That is not always the case. In Minneapolis, Minnesota, 19 year old Fong Lee was shot at by Minnesota State Trooper Jason Andersen after chasing Lee around the outside of his school; nine shots were fired at Lee, eight of which hit him. It is happening more commonly throughout the world and media has made it easier to get reports and send information quicker. Christopher Harris and Fong Lee were just 2 of the cases that proved more significant to media outlets due to surveillance footages at both scenes, allowing viewers to ‘see’ what happened. Police brutality has been noticed, taken into consideration of the public eye, and interpreted as an idea that police cannot be trusted, but they can. Most law enforcement officers enforce the rules and regulations of laws, and keep true to them themselves.
