Introduction
In the article, Predicting Music Appreciation with Past Emotional Responses to Music (2001) by Robert H. Woody and Kimberly J. Burns, describes the reason why many young people may not have a connection or gravitation towards “classical” music. Many young people simply jumble up “classical” music into such broad category because they do not understand the many different complex components to classical music. They assume that all music without lyrics is considered to be classical music. This makes it more difficult for young individuals to comprehend classical music because they are so accustomed to simply hearing music with lyrics in it, but never fully paying attention to the other components that make up the entirety of the piece. In order to prove the hypothesis that young people did not have an emotional connection with classical music, they preformed a case study to get a clearer conclusion.

In the end, the majority of the students did not gain a stupendous amount of appreciation towards classical music, but none of the students stated that they disliked classical music. This also could be because all of the students voluntarily enrolled in the music course. Students that are already enrolled in a music course could have a little more background and may feel less forced to listen to different styles of music. In order to gain a more accurate result, the experiment should broaden towards students that are not enrolled in a music course. Students that are not already enrolled in a music course can provide a fresh perspective and a different variability of the results already
Music, one of the many factors that enhance our lives, has been a widely ranged field. From Classical music to Hip Hop, there are listeners of all ages, each having their own preference of music. Through research, it has been discovered that memory can be affected by many different factors, including music. Music has been found to stimulate parts of the brain, alleviating stress and depression. Additional research also shows that music, especially Classical, enhances the storage and recall of memory. Therefore we decided to test the effect of music on memory to evaluate the changes and differences.
What is music? Denotatively speaking, music is sounds combined in such a way to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. Music to me is something that I rely on to get me through everything, it is the thing that has shaped me into the person I am today. But, if I asked you how many symphonies Beethoven had written, could you tell me? To be blunt, probably not. Not only is this a problem with people today, it is a recurring problem with our youth. In Daniel Felsenfeld’s essay “Rebel Music,” he explains the fault in our youth when it comes to being musically cultured. Throughout his essay he acknowledges how he was a stereotypical teenager who just listened to whatever was on KROQ. However, he also talks about how he changed and cultured himself, unlike all of his peers. In his essay, Felsenfeld proves his message that younger generations are musically uncultured through his use of allusions, connotative diction, and critical tone.

“Musical is a universal experience. With few exceptions, all humans perceive musical pitch, tone, timbre, and harmony. We listen to music to relax, to help us think, to celebrate, and grieve. Our emotional responses to music have been noted in literature, poetry, and drama. The power of music to evoke an emotional response is used by advertising companies, film directors, and mothers singing their babies to sleep. A big controversy of our generation today is concerning of a topic that many of us praise and could not live without. In fact, spin.com claims that the average American listens to four hours of music each day. So is music effective or hurtful to our studying? This may be an eternal topic for we don’t truly have one answer. In numerous ways listening to music is beneficial, belie some studies have come to find out it can also be harmful. I have only recently found music history classes interesting. When I was younger, history classes- memorizing dates, learning composers’ names, and listening to “boring” music, felt like a waste of time. However, since I started my fieldwork placement in Music Therapy, I learned that with the elderly population, it is very important to have basic knowledge about their musical interests.
Over the years music education in schools has dropped dramatically for more reasons than one. Now, students are required to take little to no music classes throughout their schooling year which is causing the drive and ambition about school from students to decrease significantly. After analyzing several experiments, documents, and scholarly journals research discovered that the decrease in music education has affected students on all levels of their education. From elementary school all the way through the student’s final years in high school. This decrease has affected students with techniques such as memorization, motivation, self-confidence, and many more. On the other hand, some might say that not everyone likes music and some people’s learning styles don’t require any music education to help them succeed. This is true but the overall majority of the population of students has been affected due to the decrease of music education in schools. The goal of this lab is to evaluate the effect of different music on test subjects taking math and literature tests, and see which music is the most distracting and the most helpful for subjects. .
