The civil war was a bloody time for America and left the country in shambles. America needed some rebuilding. This period was called the Reconstruction period. This period lasted from 1866 through 1877. The reconstruction period was the time of reconnecting southern states back into the union and welcoming the now freedmen as American citizens. Northern neglect killed the process of reconnecting these 11 states that left the union. First of all, northerners began to abandon the souths issues. For example, in Document C it states "They are weary of the negro question," and "Sick of carpetbag government." The term can also refer to the process the federal government used to readmit the defeated Confederate states to the Union. While all aspects of Reconstruction were not successful, the main goal of the time period was carried out, making Reconstruction over all successful. During this time, the Confederate states were readmitted to the Union, the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments were ratified, and African Americans were freed from slavery and able to start new lives.
The Civil war could very easily be known as one of the greatest tragedies in United States history. After the Civil War, the people of The United States had so much anger and hatred towards each other and the government that 11 Southern states seceded from the Nation and parted into two pieces. The Nation split into either the Northern abolitionist or the Southern planation farmers. The Reconstruction era was meant to be exactly how the name announces it to be. It was a time for the United States to fix the broken pieces the war had caused allowing the country to mend together and unite once again. The point of Reconstruction was to establish unity between the states and to also create and protect the civil rights of the former slaves.

With the end of the Civil War came the end of slavery in the United States. Although the former black slaves were now free, they had no land and very few rights, and most did not even have family. Though out reconstruction, blacks were able to gain rights, but were continuously repressed by the white Southerners. The only way to truly enfranchise the former slaves was by effectively disenfranchising their former masters. The reign the masters had over their former slaves disabled the slaves from trying to fulfill their lives as equal American citizens. In
We can say that the Reconstruction Era that came after the Civil War is the time in the history of America where what we know now was developed. By this we realize that the United States was not only able to overcome this dispute, but to grow from it. Some people might think that reconstruction was the process of only rebuilding all the buildings in the South that were destroyed during the war.
