The Unabomber. The 2005 London Tube bombings. September 11th. These are just three of various tragic terrorist events that have occurred in the world. The word “terrorism” tends invokes feelings of fear, sadness, and regurgitates traumatizing memories for people affected. Terrorism as a concept has a very specific connotation, but, terrorism itself is more nuanced than individuals realize. Terrorism extends past the individual frame of reference and encompass a myriad of groups and organizations with differing ideologies, objectives, and methodologies. While the groups are inherently different, the constant that connects them all as acts of terrorism lies in the definition of the term itself.
The concept of terrorism has been defined numerous times. Sub-state terrorism is the “terrorism from below”. It’s the underground terrorist organizations that do not have the support of their nation in fighting for their cause. Sub-state terrorism are the rebels and revolutionaries. This is the branch that includes all the infamous groups such as ISIS, al-Qaeda, P-LO, and others. Even within the category of sub-state terrorism, there are still several other categorizations that specifically identify and separate the organizations based on motive. The different types of terrorism within this branch are social revolutionary terrorism, right wing terrorism, nationalist-separatist terrorism, religious extremist terrorism, and single issue terrorism. Attacks within these categories include the 1972 Summer Olympics Attack in Munich, Germany, the truck bombings of different United State Embassies in 1998, and the 2013 Boston Marathon
