The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, tells the story of Liesel Meminger. Liesel was taken in as a foster child by an older, German couple amid Nazi Germany. During Liesel’s stay with the Hubermanns, her foster father (Hans) is faced with the quandary of hiding a Jew (Max). Hans serves as a moral compass of sorts in The Book Thief and tries to do right by others. When faced with this dilemma, he was not only making a decision that would decide Max’s fate, but also his families’ safety.

The story takes place in Nazi Germany, 1939, where Liesel Meminger arrives on Himmel Street to start a new life with her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Hubermann. She lives to a very old age and when Death finally comes to take her away, he wants to tell Liesel about beauty and brutality. But what could he tell her about beauty and brutality that she didn’t know, the Book Thief had lived through it all. The time she saw Max marching to Dachau, the time Rudy went into the Amper River to save The Whistler, and the final moments she spent with Mama. Liesel Meminger’s life had always represent beauty in the wake of brutality.

The Book Thief is set in the time of World War 2 where the Holocaust is present and disaster is everywhere. Throughout the story, Liesel, the main character, learns that words are extremely powerful and hold the ability for people to use them for good or for evil. Among the disaster and altercations, Liesel uses her literature to comfort her and make herself more powerful due to her knowledge, which demonstrates the theme of the story, the comfort and power of literature and words softens the pain of loss.

Liesel most definitely could have trusted Rudy with the secret of having Max hidden in her basement. Rudy was clearly Liesel’s best friend and partner in crime when Liesel was doing her acts of thievery stealing the books from the mayor’s wife bookself. The devotion to Liesel Rudy also had was strong and I believe Liesel could have trusted Rudy.

After detectives arrested the man for burglarizing a jewelry store, they discovered that the thief was actually a woman dressed as a man. Max Vandenberg went to hide in the Hubermann’s house he was cautious and introverted; when he grew stronger, he had a rage for Hitler which motivated him to stay alive. The novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak showed great value and importance towards the attempt of the people living their lives in their own ways by not following the crowd. As World War 2 took over Europe, the streets of Germany were filled with anti-semitic people. The setting of the story made it almost impossible to stand against evil and hatred. Homogeny is promoted and fear was always present, thus being different was almost prohibited. Although, given the circumstances, the characters of the novel showed how an individual can still live by their own choices and actions; in a world where everybody was controlled by the words of their leaders. There are three things that proves the significance of an Individual’s attempt to live unconstrained by convention or circumstances. Firstly, it is important because an individual can live a life knowing he/she has done his/her best towards the situation, and not let the world limit them. Secondly, if we try to live uncontrolled by conventions, we can make ourselves better than the rest.
