In "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson, there are two adults: Mr. Neck and Mr. Freeman, who are Melinda Sordino's teachers. Mr. Neck teaches History and he is mean, a racist, and out for Melinda. On the other hand, Mr. Freeman teaches Art, and he is nice, understanding, and cares for Melinda. In my opinion, Mr. Freeman has the most potential to help Melinda because he is able to help her overcome her problems. He is allowing her to express her pain threw her art because she won't speak about her feelings.
Speak is a cleaver and an ironic title for a story in which the main character chooses not to speak. The story is written in first-person narration from the point of view of protagonist, Melinda Sordino. Speak is written like an interior monologue in the mind of an introverted teenage girl, like excerpts from her personal diary during her miserable freshman year of high school. Instead of blending in and finding her way through high school. She withdraws and secludes herself from the other students. She calls herself an "outcast." Melinda is so desperate to hide from the world; she turns an old janitor's closet at the high school into her safe haven. She cuts classes to hide in her closet. How lonely could this teenage girl be? All

The title of the book, Speak, is ironically based on the fact that Melinda chooses not to speak. The book is written in the form of a monologue in the mind of Melinda, a teenage introvert. This story depicts the story of a very miserable freshman year of high school. Although there are several people in her high school, Melinda secludes herself from them all. There are several people in her school that used to be her friend in middle school, but not anymore. Not after what she did over the summer. What she did was call the cops on an end of summer party on of her friends was throwing. Although
There are many valuable aspects in life that may mean a lot to a person. In this case, friendship is one of the most important relationships a person can have. Human interaction is something necessary to survive, having a friend is essential to the well being of everyone. However, not all relationships with people can be considered a friendship because some may take advantage of others to gain something for themselves. Whereas, other friendships may last years and remain strong between the two people, but if there is no trust then there is a possibility of losing a friend. On the other hand, positive friendships still exist and are the ones to cherish and appreciate the most. The novel Speak written by Laurie Halse Anderson is based on a fourteen year-old girl named Melinda, who was sexually assaulted at a summer party. She called the police for help but since none of her friends knew what occurred, they assumed she called to get them all in trouble. This made her an outcast and she spent her ninth-grade year by herself. The theme of friendship is evident in the novel Speak as it impacts the protagonist Melinda. This is seen through Melinda 's friendship with Rachel, Mr. Freeman, and Heather.
Chris Rexroth 4th hour 11/16/14 Laurie Halse Anderson asserts, through the utilization of similes and symbolism in Speak, that in order to heal, we must forget the past. Throughout the whole story, Anderson made the most of symbolism to show that not forgetting the past hurts us. For example, while dissecting a frog in biology class, Melinda explains, “Our frog lies on her back.
There are various teachers in the novel, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. Grant and Vivian are both caring teachers. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson is a book about high school. The “best years of your life.” Unfortunately, Melinda Sordino experienced high school differently. Beginning the year with no friends, because she called the cops during a summer party, because she got raped. Speak by Anderson was a good read, but it wasn’t a good book. There was multiple things you could have done to make this a better book.
In the novel Speak, Laurie Halse Anderson uses creative techniques to share the story of Melinda Sordino. The author uses symbolism and foreshadowing to relay the Melinda’s feelings and thoughts throughout the book. Symbolism is visible throughout the story. It is not obvious at first, but it is there. When Melinda chooses a tree to draw the whole year in art, it symbolizes that Melinda is the tree.
A book I would recommend to my classmates would have to be Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. Speak is my personal favorite because the author portrays high school more realistically than most books. The book begins with the introduction of the main character Melinda. The reader soon discovers that Melinda was sexually violated at a party. She calls the police only for them to discover teens who are illegally drinking. Everyone at school is blaming Melinda for ruining their fun time. They do not know about the rape and think she only called the police to have them caught. Melinda starts to blame herself as well and stops speaking to everyone. The result of her never speaking is she becomes an outcast. Melinda later makes a friend who is named
Don Yang and Sue Thao taught about 40 students overall. The class is divided into two groups. Mr. Yang taught the ages from nine to fourteen, while Mr. Thao lectured older students ages from eighteen and up.
The next quote made by a girl (Girl One) in the play, refers to the point I had earlier regarding the children identifying between the two teachers, and perhaps even comparing between them. “Agh, hey, sir, all the other teachers y’ link them (arms) !” although this relates to a rather silly and unimportant subject (linking arms) I think it has a deeper meaning to it and proves the children notice that Mr.Briggs is much more firm. This could be interpreted as a good thing as it comes in handy at times, however, it’s more commonly interpreted as a negative thing since this means the students will tend to be more reluctant towards that teacher and even develop a sense of hatred towards him; rather than build a relationship with the students. This could greatly affect the way the children
In the novel Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, the main protagonist Melinda is faced with many conflicts against society, and against herself. Anderson is able to develop the theme of communication or lack thereof through her use of symbolism, and motifs throughout the novel. There are many themes that occur throughout the novel, however the theme of communication can be prominently seen through the challenges Melinda faces in her everyday to day school life. Melinda’s communication is mostly non verbal as can be seen in the novel. A motif that occurs throughout the novel is Melinda’s self conflict with biting her lips. Melinda’s anxiousness can be seen when she is put in a situation to speak and she constantly picks on her lips until they start
My PSA is on consent and sexual assault and it is a topic that I believe more people should be informed about. I feel truly connected to this topic because I believe I can make an impact on someone’s life with my PSA. While researching for this PSA I have realized that people need to be informed about the definition of consent. Our entire grade read “Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson, we all know Melinda’s story and we all read her struggle to finally tell people about what Andy Evans did to her. I included and quote that Melinda had said when she finally told her story, it reflected the feeling of relief when one finally tells their story.
In the book “Loser” by Jerry Spinelli, there are two teachers named Miss Meeks and Mrs. Biswell. They are very similar but they also have many things that aren’t in common. One of the reasons they aren’t the same are Miss Meeks likes kids and Mrs. Biswell doesn’t. Keep on reading my essay and you will find out the other two reasons why Miss Meeks and Mrs. Biswell aren’t the same.
I visualize Hairwomen as a girl that has uncombed hair and her hair is very rough and she is a mean, angry, and yells at everyone but she doesn’t like kids because there snotty and she probably just keeps her hair like that so she won’t see any of there faces. I visualize Mr.Neck to be a teacher that hates all of the kids that don’t listen to him, another way i see Mr.Neck is he doesn’t like to be interupted when he is talking. My visualization about Mr.Freeman is he is a caring teacher and he loves what he does and he is probably a scronny old teacher but he makes sure all of his students are doing good in his class and he wants everyone to pass and just have a fun time doing art. The spanish teacher is visualized like a boring teacher and
In the book "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson, tow adults are Mr. Neck and Mr. Freeman. Mr. Neck is know to not like Melinda and believes she is nothing but trouble, however Mr. Freeman one the other hand is a very positive teacher that doesn't hate his students. Mr. Freeman is the art teacher that tries to teach life lessons through art to help interest the students in what there drawing, he has helped Melinda by helping her express her feelings she is going through. On the other had Mr. Neck is a history teacher that only cares about the teaching subject at hand and not how it can relate to the students he is teaching, the first sighs of Mr. Neck being out to get Melinda is because all she has done is walk into the classroom and he already
