1. Limited Freedom – People want what they can’t have. If you will tell someone that a certain product will soon become out of stock, he will have a greater desire to purchase it. You should create a situation where you will inform your audience that the offer is available for a limited time only. Persuasion has caused lots of us to rethink how they live and who they are. But what exactly is persuasion? Persuasion can be defined as the attempt to convince someone that something, that they may or may not believe, is true. When used correctly, persuasion can cause almost anyone to think or do anything. Many persuasive techniques can be used to make someone think the way you want them to, or do what you want them to do. Jonathan Edwards was preacher and writer. He gave many sermons to try and persuade others to think and do what he wanted them to. One of his most well-known written sermons is Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God. He used the art of persuasion in this sermon to try and convince people to change their ways before the were cast into the burning pits of hell. Some of the persuasive techniques used by Jonathan Edwards in Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God were logical reasoning, emotional appeal, and imagery.
Persuasion is a very strong technique that is used by many throughout history to form some of the greatest works of literature. Ethos, pathos, and logos are the three forms of persuasion. In 2008 a man by the name of Barack Obama created his Victory Speech after a very hard fought campaign. He utilizes the three modes of persuasion to create his very persuasive speech. Persuasion is one of the most crucial strengths to any speaker, especially when applying ethos, pathos, and logos just as Barack Obama did in his 2008 Victory Speech.
To rouse the audience, in anger or otherwise, you use pathos. Use what your audience expects to happen and their beliefs. Telling a story that the audience can relate to in the first person makes the persuader relatable, to pull the audience in, play with your volume to make your emotion seem real, speaking plainly makes your emotion more believable. Never belittle your audience’s opinion, it can start a riot. Patriotism works not only for a country but can create a sense of unity. Find your persuasion gaps and fill them with desire and lust. Make your audience lust after your cause.
Throughout history, persuasion has been used by world leaders to captivate people’s hearts, minds, and their attention. A great example of this is in the 1960’s when Martin Luther King Jr. created a movement of equality among all the races. In today’s world, many people know Donald Trump as trying to persuade voters to dissipate from a certain mindset when it comes to voting. A farmer, astronomer, and author named Benjamin Banneker wrote a persuasive letter to Thomas Jefferson in 1791, this demonstrates that persuasion has been a strategy in writing for hundreds of years. In his letter, Benjamin Banneker’s uses some rhetorical strategies such as a passive-aggressive tone, compare/contrast, and emotional appeal to spread his message that slavery must be abolished completely.
There are a plethora of controversial topics in the world today. Each issue has multiple sides that are trying to influence people's thoughts and gain their support. “Oil to Die For” and “Climate Change Debate: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” are trying to do just that. Persuasion is an art, an art that is even more powerful influence with today's electronically based society. However, some sources are far more persuasive than others.

A line of reasoned argument must be developed in order to persuade the audience in an effective way. In order to persuade the following things needs to be followed: 1) Focus on the needs of the other party: Listen to the interests of other parties carefully in order to get an insight about their expectations and interests. 2). If it has been identified that the central route of persuasion on an audience is necessary due to high relevance to the persuasive message, this gives the persuader a framework to begin crafting a strong argument. Since relevance is what captures the audience’s attention, the persuader must exploit this. For example, if the persuader is attempting to sell a car to an individual the the use of the central route, and the potential buyer has been categorized as one that clearly understands the relevance of the purchase, the persuader should do his or her best to make their product seem the most relevant to the customer. The seller may do this by asking the customer to visualize how happy they will be in their new car. This can also be done by highlighting the features of the car that are most applicable to the customer’s concerns (safety, high gas mileage, etc). These methods will invite the receiver to become more involved with the target of persuasion. All of these ways utilize the customer’s judgment of high relevance to the situation to construct a strong argument.
I have not been placed in many situations where I have needed to persuade someone. I can see how there are ways that work depending on your specific audience. When considering some of the forms of persuasion it seems to work well in business and sales scenarios, or when trying to persuade a large audience. There was a time that I, along with several other individuals, were called upon to speak on the House Floor in front of the Colorado Legislature to try to help pass a House Bill. It was an interesting process with some positive and negative points that will be described along with what seemed to work and in this scenario what was lacking.
