"You think slavery is right and ought to be extended; we think it is wrong and ought to be restricted.” Abraham Lincoln stated. What is slavery? Slavery is the brutal act of forcing someone to work hard without paying them a fair wage or sometimes without paying with at all. What if Abraham Lincoln didn’t issue the Emancipation Proclamation, what would life be like? Therefore, the purpose of slavery in the United States was to make African Americans feel like they were below everyone else, feel like they will never mount to anything and other people felt as if God doomed African Americans to be slaves.

What is slavery? Slavery is forced labor and this forced labor is what built America and made them become more developed. “Africans peoples were captured and transported to the Americas to work. Most European colonial economies in the Americas from the 16th century through the 19th were dependant on enslaved African labor for their survival.” Many claim that enslavement was very necessary in order for America to thrive and not die off for it is now one of the best countries in the world. However, slavery was not necessary in the Americas it was just a mechanism that just stripped Africans of their human rights, giving the slave masters the “right” to abuse them. In addition, colonies was skeptical about the slaves they were taking in each season. Colonies didn’t trust slaves that come from other places except Africa, because they believe the ones that was sent from the other countries were to escape and even attack. Although statistics say slaves commits less crime than whites, colonies made improvement to their systems to keep slaves in check. On the other hand, slaves could be free if their masters wish them to be free, however, even to get free slaves have to do extra work to secure their freedom.
Slavery was the center of the Southern economy. The culture of the South made it a necessity to have labor to work and harvest the crops of the cotton, tobacco, sugar and more. Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1794 and once it was introduced to the South, more cotton could be picked. The purpose of the cotton gin was to have some of slaves work be lifted from their shoulders, but it resulted in the opposite. After the invention, slaves became in even more high demand and the number of slaves before the cotton gin and after the invention increased by approximately 400%. As there were more slaves more cotton was being grown and sold and the southern economy became extremely dependant on slave labor. Most slaves worked in the fields, but some slaves worked as maids, seamstresses, and cooks. These are jobs that white people would not do so, the “bad jobs” were taken care of for very cheap.

In the next document a Christian from the North claims that the people of America need to choice between disunion and the guilt of accomplice in the crime of slavery. Former President Abraham Lincoln is accredited for creating the Emancipation Proclamation and ending slavery in the United States. Due to his actions before and during the Civil War, it seems as though Lincoln always viewed slavery as a terrible thing that must be stopped immediately. But that was not how he always felt. Lincoln’s views on slavery varied during his political career and his plan of action was mostly based off of how he personally felt about slavery. Lincoln admitted in his speeches that he knew slavery was wrong, but the steps that had to be taken to deal with slavery were never concrete in his mind. Based on Lincoln’s upbringing,

"I have no purpose directly or indirectly to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so." (Mr. President Abraham Lincoln)
Interesting though that Abraham Lincoln said, “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that.” Slavery was a practice that was established in the United States and one of the factors leading to the Civil War. Many African Americans were even kidnapped and forced into slavery, even if they were already free slaves. The Constitution regarded all men are created equal; yet that somehow didn’t apply to the African American population. Eventually, the Emancipation Proclamation granted freedom to the slaves, and slavery ended. Today there is several kinds of “slavery” that is still going on around the globe. Forced labor is another type of slavery that is going on in today’s society. Men and women are forced against their will to labor.
