The title of the book is called Night for reasons such as the fact that the first night was what changed his life, it symbolizes the darkness that encased all of their souls, and it also symbolizes how dark and evil the world was. The title Night has a stronger meaning than what it seems.

Night by Elie Wiesel develops many themes such as: emotional death, the struggle to maintain faith, and self-preservation versus family commitment. Night is a story of a young Jewish boy, Elie, sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War. Elie is the narrator of the story. Throughout the story, Elie experiences many experiences that will haunt him eternally. Wiesel writes about Elie’s horrendous experiences, feelings, and thoughts at Auschwitz. The themes emotional death, the struggle to maintain faith, and self-preservation versus family commitment are prevalent in Elie’s story of perseverance and triumph despite hard circumstances.

There are many vices that are taken up exclusively by Humans. Other animals don’t think about wiping out entire races or species just for kicks, most species don’t have the urge to attempt genocide or even turning on their own kin, but humans do. Elie Wiesel was a holocaust survivor whose ghastly year at the Auschwitz death camp was shared with the world by way of his book, “Night.”

Elie’s personal struggle with his experience evoke connotations of darkness that describe the inhumane treatment that Elie and the Jews are forced to endure throughout the memoir. In the beginning, Elie's town is invaded by German soldiers and soon, the Germans force all of the town's Jews to evacuate. After being thrown onto a freight train to Auschwitz, Elie experiences a whole new world filled with fear and hatred. Elie uses “night” to describe the struggles and hardships that he encounters throughout his experience. The literal meaning of the word night is simply the period of darkness everyday between sunset and sunrise. However, the metaphorical meaning of night, in this memoir, is far more sinister. As depicted in Night, the title metaphorically refers to the evil, hopelessness, and emotional coldness that the Jews are constantly forced to face throughout the Holocaust.

Robert Shapiro, an American civil litigator once said, “To me, the Holocaust stands alone as the most horrible human event in modern civilization,” The Holocaust, a genocide led by Adolf Hitler, killed six million jews, and dramatically affected the whole world. The memoir “Night,” written by Elie Wiesel describes the brutality Wiesel experienced during the Holocaust, and how life changing it was. Although some may believe the memoir written by Elie Wiesel was titled “Night” because he was forced to leave his home during the night, Wiesel illustrates Jews losing hope, faith, and happiness through the symbol of Night, to prove that the memoir was titled “Night” to symbolize the darkness the holocaust created.

In the novel “Night”, by Elie Wiesel, the Holocaust survivor suggests that when humans are faced with protecting their own mortality, they abandon their morals and values. This can be seen in both the Jewish and German people. The German’s are inhumanely cruel to protect their own jobs and safely by obeying government commands. The Jewish captives lost their morals as they fight to survive the concentration camps. Elie Wiesel encountered many obstacles that made many of his ideals changed drastically for Wiesel which was his loss in humanity throughout the book he explains the many ways he does not see people as people anymore. He also explains how all of his natural human rights were no more during the time in the Holocaust. He had to find a sense of self because he could have easily fallen apart. He could not have done anything different, he knew it was going to end poorly. Silence is a very important and prominent theme in this book as silence represents many key symbols such as. God’s silence: Eliezar questions God’s faith many times throughout this book and wonders how he could just sit there and be silent while people are mass murdering people.

The first activity that I chose to do, was to interview a character in the memoir, Night. The second activity that I choose, was to create a collage that represents the mode and the themes of this memoir. Many themes were portrayed throughout this memoir. The two activities I chose, relate to a variety of themes: the consequences of human judgement, loss of faith in God, father-son relationships, and loss of human freedom.

Furthermore, the title of a book can reference what happens during the book. Elie Wiesel chose the title Night to show how this was a dark time in his life. On page 37, Elie says, “The student of Talmud. . . had been consumed by flames. All that was left was a shape that resembled me.” (Wiesel) The title Night is referring to the dark time in Elie’s life. If this book was titled Day or Dawn, some of the things that occur in this book wouldn’t be seen be seen by the reader as violent. This quote is when Elie is in Auschwitz during the first night. When he arrived, a part of himself was gone. This was when he started losing his faith. The title of a book can change how things are viewed by the reader. An author may choose the book because of something the characters do or something that happens to the characters. In Elie’s case, it was because of what happened to him in the concentration camps.
