Movie Review: The Great Gatsby and Romeo and Juliet
Question 1: The choice of set, props and clothing in both movies.
Juliet wants to extend her present, as her future prospects with Romeo are bleak and Gatsby wants to create a beautiful future by restoring the past. Baz Luhrmann is known for his distinctive style especially in films such as Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Strictly Ballroom. Also known as ‘The Red Curtain Trilogy’, there are many similarities between all three of these films with The Great Gatsby. Baz Luhrmann is able to keep his pompous signature style that has made him the director that he is today. The extravagant parties, modern music, dramatic deaths and star crossed lovers were just a few of

It can be seen on peoples t-shirts in the movie, shaved onto people’s heads, tattooed onto people like Sir Francis and there are saintly figures around the city. Even in the title of the play “Romeo + Juliet”, this symbolises religion, Christianity. That religion is an important part in the characters’ lives and also plays a huge aspect in the movie. Props used are also guns in Romeo and Juliet. It seems as if every has a gun and it is just the norm. In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet wears white dresses often which symbolise her purity and innocence. In the Great Gatsby Daisy and Jordan also wear white clothes but it symbolises the laziness and the stereotypes of the 1920’s that women don’t need to do anything and they can ‘afford’ to wear white clothes because all they do is lounge around. In both the movies the parties that are thrown are huge and extravagant which show status and class. I both movies the parties act as a catalyst to the main characters relationships. In Romeo and Juliet they meet at the party and they’re relationship builds there. In the great Gatsby at the party daisy finally attends they also have a moment at the party away from everyone
‘The Great Gatsby’ by F. Scott Fitzgerald belongs to one of the most celebrated and intriguing novels of all time; it is considered a literary masterpiece of the twentieth century. The story follows the enigmatic Long Island billionaire Jay Gatsby, who is, after years, still besotted with Daisy Buchanan and wishes to reunite. The reader becomes familiar with Gatsby’s character through the eyes of 29-year-old narrator Nick Carraway, who appears to not only be Gatsby’s new neighbor, but also Daisy’s relative. After coming to an awareness of Gatsby’s amorous past with Daisy, Nick makes an effort reuniting the two, and from there a series of unfortunate events take place. The story takes place in 1922, which allowed the author to create an accurate portrayal of the roaring twenties and its lost generation. Because of the novel’s popularity, there have been numerous film adaptations since its
Alienation can be defined as a state of being cut off or separate from a person or group of people. There are many factors that cause people to become alienated: race, political views, social status, etc. The texts “The Great Gatsby”, “The Catcher in the Rye”, and the play “Death of a Salesman” all portray characters who are cut off from the rest society. Despite the character's best effort to fit in, they ultimately fail. The authors argue that one's ideology can cause them to be alienated.
Have you ever had a best friend? Someone that was always there for you? Do you truly know how they felt about you? The Great Gatsby is about a young man named Jay Gatsby, a motivated bootlegger pursuing a grandeurous life that ends with a tragedy caused by betrayal. Of Mice and Men tells a story about two men who travel ranch to ranch together. They stumble upon a ranch that in the long run is the end of the road for them. The Great Gatsby and Of Mice and Men both portray two different stories in different time periods, yet both stories have strong resemblance. Both F.Scott Fitzgerald and John Steinbeck exemplify through their characters that friendships are not always perceived the same between two individuals.
While written centuries apart, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald both focus on societal expectations and personal shame. Though Gatsby and Hester both commit adultery and face derision from society as a result, Gatsby, unlike Hester, is not able to accept his position in the community and remains a social pariah of the upper-class he so dearly wishes to join.
Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's most intense plays and one his most complex psychological studies. It is also a play about which there is a great deal of historical background, which I think you'll find interesting because it reveals Shakespeare's creative process. The play was written in 1605--1606. It's one of the plays where the date is pretty firmly established by internal references to external events, and most scholars have agreed on the date.
An important aspect of modernism is the ability to connect to readers with personal ventures. The experiences Fitzgerald and Hemingway endured during their lifetimes is reflected distinctively through both authors events and characters. To expound, in Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s life he was poor until his late twenties , providing a perfect comparison to the main character in his renowned novel The Great Gatsby: Jay Gatsby. Gatsby, in the novel, yearned for his true love, Daisy’s, hand in marriage just as Fitzgerald had for his wife Zelda. Both men were forced to climb in financial status in order to to grasp a chance with their beloved inamorata. “He hadn’t once ceased looking at Daisy, and I think he revalued everything in his house according to the
The nineteen twenties was a time of lavish parties, the stock market was on the rise and women such as flappers were gaining independence. Despite this, men at the time were still seen as superior and their brutish, abusive, and cheating was considered the norm. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby Tom Buchanan and George Wilson are more similar than different, despite the money that determines their fate. This story reveals how Tom and George both have similar attitudes towards women and both are being cuckolded, the only thing that differentiates the two is money and power.
“There are all kinds of love in this world but never the same love twice” says Gatsby. Comparing the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby starring Robert Redford as Gatsby, the 2013 version starring Leonardo Dicaprio, and the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, they have similar plot with some differences. The main plot line within all of them is Gatsby wants to get his old love Daisy Buchanan back after leaving for the military, and when he returns she is already married to another man so he was killed and unable to get her back. Fitzgerald would prefer Buz Luhrmann's 2013 version of his novel Great Gatsby starring Leonardo Dicaprio, because of the important details included in the film.
Romance, love, and destiny. Connections are formed like bridges built of various things; love, trust, money, fate. Some bridges are stronger than others and some bridges connect people who perhaps shouldn’t be connected. The movie “The Great Gatsby” better expresses the romantic relationships and connections between characters. Between Tom and Daisy, whose relationship may have more to do with survival than love, with Myrtle and Tom, the bridge between them connecting two souls searching for something more in life. And then there are bridges like the one between Jordan and Nick, filled with lies and a bridge not often travelled, and if you’re lucky you come across a bridge like Gatsby and Daisy's, which is made of love but filled with obstacles. These bridges play a key part in the story and the movie most definitely does a better job at expressing these connections between characters.
Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau once wrote, ‘'Money buys everything, except morality and citizens.'’ Many people, especially nowadays, have this notion that the more money they obtain, the happier they’ll be. Of course, that’s not always true. There have been several instances, in literature and this world, where that’s not always the case. There are some differences between F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Lauren Greenfield’s The Queen of Versailles. However, there are similarities in the way wealth was portrayed and how it won’t always lead to true happiness, but could end up causing unhappiness and pain.
Othello and The Great Gatsby may be from different time periods, yet the authors convey similar themes in their works of literature. Othello is by William Shakespeare, and the tragedy is set to take place in Venice, Italy and Cyprus during the sixteen hundreds. Shakespeare’s tragedy begins with a confrontation between the married couple Othello and Desdemona and her father who holds a feeling of betrayal. The couple declares their love for one another and travels to Cyprus where drama ensues regarding whether Desdemona was adulterous; the vindictive Iago manipulates Othello which results in the death of many individuals. On the other hand, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel titled The Great Gatsby occurs in the early nineteen
There is a sharp contrast between Othello and Gatsby. The first point is about the attitled towords to their woman. As for The Great Gatsby, Gatsby and daisy fell in love with each other at the begining of the story. However, Gastby was fooled by Daisy, she just likes money. Therefore, she got married with Nike who was the rich man.
Society in the world during a time is often told best in a novel, The Great Gatsby by
Social class defined is a broad group in society having common economic, cultural, or political status. Social classes are a common theme in both modern and classic novels. The theme of social classes is clearly depicted throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. The social classes are distinguished in The Great Gatsby as old money, new money, and no money. Those that belong to a family from old money live on the lavish East Egg, while those that recently became wealthy live on the West egg. Similarly in Wuthering Heights, the wealth of a family is determined by where they live: Thrushcross Grange the superior property or Wuthering Heights. The protagonist in both novels struggle to overcome the barriers that accompany their social class in order to be with their beloveds.
The use of guns in Romeo and Juliet is essential and is possibly the most important prop used in the film. The guns replace swords, illustrating the violence between the Montague and Capulet feud. Similarly, the importance of props to convey and highlight an important idea from the original text is also evident in The Great Gatsby. Jay Gatsby’s signet ring and cane are frequently displayed: indicative of Jay’s stature. Luhrmanns use of cars and the obvious colour similarities in both movies is evident. In Romeo and Juliet cars are another tool used to demonstrate the Montague and Capulet feud, the cars are opposite colours: blue for Montague and yellow for Capulet. The use of opposing hotel buildings with the words Montague and Capulet further reinforce the importance of the feud from the original text in the film. In The Great Gatsby the use of yellow and blue coloured cars is similar to that of Romeo and Juliet displaying the opposing parties, Jay Gatsby (yellow) and Tom Buchanan
