The questionnaire helps me to interpret my own understanding and awareness about the cultural diversity. My total score of cultural diversity awareness is 141. And the score is in the very high range. The score almost describes my understandings and attitudes toward the cultural diversity. My own culture background has impacted my ideas about it. As an international student, especially who came from an eastern country, my skin color, language, and culture are quite different from the U.S. It really stressed me from the freshman year until now. However, I have encountered many people who are willing to understand my culture and supported me to overcome the challenges. For instance, many times when I get stuck in the conversation due to my
Engaging into the importance of multicultural competence, awareness of such competency has become a significant necessity in the area of mental health, and various fields of psychology (Hayes, 2008). It is essential for a counselor to be multicultural competent in order to develop a therapeutic alliance with a client, while understanding their cultural identity. Therefore, culturally competent knowledge, attitudes, and skills of diverse culture, is necessary, in proper treatment and diagnosis. Nonetheless, the complexity of cultural diversity can contribute to challenges in assessment, diagnosis and or treatment. It is further understood; by understanding one’s social history, psychosocial history, presenting problems, along with other pertinent information regarding a cultural responsiveness in a diagnosis, and how it would be beneficial to individuals of various social, ethnic, and other minority groups in order to make a treatment plan based on the findings of a cultural assessment (Sue & Sue, 2013). Nonetheless, cultural influences, often neglected, are needed to incorporate the challenges cultural groups face when seeking treatment. Therefore, I have found it applicable to use “ADDRESSING,” framework in therapy as a resource for developing cultural and relevant assessments in addition to the onset symptoms presented in the client in the case study of Mrs. Hudson. The use of “ADDRESSING” acronym is designed to obtain age, developmental and physical disabilities
My initial reaction to taking this quiz was, thinking how I was open minded, and yet I still don't have very much knowledge of diversity apparently! While I was reading through and answering the questions on the multicultural quiz, it was definitely challenging. I only answered two correct out of the 15 questions, which, unfortunately, wasn’t very encouraging. I could be negative and feel ‘stupid’ after taking this test, but I am actually thankful for having this quiz as an eye opener. This quiz also gave me the opportunity to realize I need to keep in mind that I will be faced with situations in the classroom with students and parents with a variety of backgrounds at many economic levels. The bottom line is we are all human with the same blood color and deserve respect and love. The first question on the quiz, which asked about what percentage of U.S schools have no color teachers on their staff, was 40%! I honestly thought here in the United States we would have a higher percentage of cultural diversity on our education team. I was quite surprised also by question four’s correct answer, stating that the U.S is one of the countries rated the lowest for the treatment children. The United States has a high

Nursing continues to strive towards excellence in delivering culturally competent healthcare. Through this journey of excellence, improvements can be made by continued education and awareness. Awareness of areas I need growth in builds on my existing knowledge and skills. In this paper, I will identify areas of weaknesses and strengths in my cultural competency skills as well as strategies that will improve my transcultural nursing care. I have identified these areas using the Cultural Diversity Self-Assessment. Achieving a total score of 104, this tool has allowed me to target my weaknesses and create a plan to increase my competence in those areas. I have also been able to identify my strengths in cultural competence.
The Cultural Diversity Self-Awareness Inventory we had to complete at the beginning of the semester, I feel, was necessary to know where we stood with our own self-awareness of cultural competence. On my Cultural Diversity Self-Assessment Inventory, I achieved an average score, but I feel that I could improve exponentially. Though I did see that I was self-aware when interacting with others and where I stood when it came to other types of diversity.
Throughout history there has been a cluster of tension and conflict between police and minority communities within the United States. The job of a police officer is to enforce the law and protect all citizens regardless of their race, gender, or sexual preferences; however, more and more police departments across the United States are being accused of targeting and harassing those who are different. State and local police departments have been left to their own devices on how to police minority communities and improve cultural differences among their officers by seeking out a reform recruitment and adjusting policies in hopes to attract a significant improvement of minority applicants, all while training other officers in understanding
Although I am middle-aged, I have never traveled outside of the United States nor have I had the privilege to experience a wide diversity of cultures. Other than research or articles that I have read throughout my life, I have little knowledge pertaining to other cultures. However, through my former employment and my daughter, I have some experience and knowledge of the Hispanic families that relocated to our area.
Our assignment, Diversity Awareness, was to take the self-assessment on page 55 of our textbook, calculate our scores, and then read the definition of our score provided in the book. The purpose of this self-assessment was to gain insight on our personal views about diversity. By gaining insight to our personal views we will hopefully be able to identify our weaknesses, take the necessary corrective actions, and become more culturally competent people. According to our textbook my score of 32 means I have a "high diversity awareness and I am comfortable with many different types of people and in many types of situations" . (Phillips|Gulley, pg. 55)
Culture can be defined as “language, ideas, beliefs, customs, taboos, codes, institutions, tools, techniques, works of art, rituals, ceremonies, and symbols” (Merriam-Webster, 2014). The United States is currently experiencing a dramatic change regarding cultural diversity. According to a recent census, 36.3 percent of the United States population belongs to an ethnic or racial minority (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010). Increased immigration from around the world is continually adding to the numbers of our already culturally diverse nation. However, despite a marked increase in life expectancy, a decrease in infant mortality, and other health care improvements, many minority groups still experience poorer access to heal care. It should be the goal of every health care worker, especially nurses, to do all that is in their power to not only culturally congruent care but also to attempt to eliminate these health care related disparities.
A way this movie can relate to this class would be the diversity issues of race, and gender. In my Cultural Diversity class we learn a lot about diversity in race and gender and what causes it to take place which can lead to your values of families back then. Values were completely different years back. If you’re taught what is right is to have slaves and it’s all you ever see then people will follow along. Because, if you don’t follow along with the values of ones close to you sometimes it could of lead to death, judgement from family and friends, or even becoming a slave yourself as punishment. Values are described as the deep subjective ideals and standards by which members of a culture judge their personal actions and those of others(Page
I have scored well on both assessments which consider me to be a particularly cultural sensitive person. The cultural awareness assessment which I scored lower on was due to inexperience for some of the questions that were asked. Question one, for example, asked, "I listen to people from other cultures when they tell me how my culture affects them is one experience I have yet to encounter. I have always considered a person culture and briefs are fascinating in every fashion. Growing up in a very diverse environment allowed me the opportunity to interact with people of many different cultures, religions, beliefs, and practices. My personal experiences dealing with those of different culture different from my own does not equate to providing
I hail from the hearth of cultural diversity in the United States of America, New York City. Therefore it wouldn't be a surprise that all of my conscious life, I've been surrounded by different cultures, backgrounds, and views divergent from my own. Even though the sheer fact that my hometown displays an ability to thrive in a vibrant community, I don't believe that speaking about it alone would be sufficient enough to express why I would be able to fit into a vibrant community analogous to one of the most prestigious universities in the world, Rutgers University.
Cultural diversity is the understanding that within a given society, there are many cultures and backgrounds being represented in that society. Diversity can be represented by the different languages being spoken natively or by racial and ethnic orientation. The diversity of cultures is what allows for an exchange of ideas, goods and values from one culture to another. Such diversities within cultures can only exist if they are maintained and are seen as equally as important as any other. Cultural diversity is also ever changing the landscape of the United States as we are welcoming more immigrants.
Although employers generally feel justified in denying immigrants employment based on the needs of their businesses, immigrants have regularly filed discriminating lawsuits against these companies since the 1980’s under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects immigrants from being discriminated against based on their national origin (Texas Law Review, 20xx, p. 1496). Title VII has been used to litigate against employers who institute English-only rules as non-native English immigrants equate this to national origin discrimination (Texas Law review, 20XX, p. 1496). It seems that under the civil rights act of 1964, these individuals would have a legitimate claim of discrimination but despite the strong links, courts rarely rule in favor of the plaintiffs in these cases. The courts find that there is not significant harm caused to the plaintiff or sufficient business reasons were laid forth by the employer as reasons to justify its decision (Texas Law Review, 20xx, p. 1496)
Diversity has broad ranges of spectrums. Students from all across the continent; students from political refugees, indigenous Americans, and immigrants bring their culture and linguistic skills to American classrooms. Students do not only bring their cultures and linguistic skills, but they bring their ethnics, talents, and skills. In addition, their age and gender are two
