This is an interesting argument that most people may ask themselves every time they walk out their home. Does America cherish its diversity? We were shown two arguments that supported its own claim in some way. In Jena McGregor’s article, “Fixing Hollywood’s Diversity Problem”, she claims that America doesn’t cherish its diversity based on the Academy Awards this year. In Eboo Patel’s article, “Making the Future Better, Together”, he claims that America does cherish its diversity by giving examples of two of the most well-known people that changed a lot in America to become the way it is now. They both were well argued arguments, but the one that stood out the most was Patel’s. In Patel’s argument he gave the examples of Martin Luther
Diversity isn’t something to be ignored, but is that where our primary focus should lie? It is in our very nature to celebrate our differences; without it we lose our identity. As a society we literally dance in the streets to celebrate our individualities. However, Walter Benn Michaels points out a very interesting issue that is not only social but economical as well, in his book The Trouble with Diversity: How We Learned to Love Identity and Ignore Inequality. When we strip away our color, our heritage and begin to look at our wallets we become embarrassed, even shy about our how fat or thin it becomes. His political stance is intended for a general audience to: show present concepts of cultural diversity, to illustrate how Americans
The articles “ Can Diversity Destroy Us?” and “A.D.2041: End of White America?” are written by Patrick J. Buchanan who is author and also the former assistant to the president for communications. These articles primarily talk about the idea of diversity in the Unites State and why Buchanan thought it could destroy America and why it is bad. On the other hand, in the article, “Model of America Ethnic Relation: a Historical Prospective”, Fredrickson discusses the ethnic between races and religions through out the American history. He has listed four models of ethnic relations. The first model he explains is ethnic hierarchy. The idea of this model is to deal with dominant group that claims to conceive themselves as a higher social class and claim
Whose differences help us progress as a nation. An immense about of people immigrate to the United States looking for opportunity and prosperity that their own countries could not offer. DACA recipients and immigrants work so much more harder than those who actually have the resources to reach their goals. They maneuver their way into fulfilling their goal no matter who or what is against them. These individuals were really young when they immigrated to the United States. They had no choice. Despite the adversities they contribute positively to the community and nation. They influence me greatly and show me that with hard work and perseverance you can go a long way. Diversity is the stepping stone onto making America more greater than what it is, still we have people who think
David Brooks, a political and social writer, commentator, journalist and editor wrote an article to comment on “diversity” and the nature in which people organize themselves in America. The article was published in The Atlantic Monthly, September 2003. Brooks responds to the issue which he see as the obvious: how diversity is a great deal in the United States but yet, no one gives heed to it. Throughout his response, he brings to our attention the various reasons why he think the issue is present in America. He also presents ways in which people could fix this problem by giving examples of what they could do. With all of that being the center of his response, Brooks did bring up certain ideas which I perceive as either agreeable or disagreeable.
As humans, we define generations as different types of people from different times. Each generation had its own unique characteristics that defined their time. Though the variety of each time was great, it could have some additions from the new generation. One major thing the new generation could inform the “oldies” is that, accepting others put us far as a majority. Understanding different types of people without fear can bring happiness and success to lives, without trouble.
In discussions of diversity and equality, one controversial issue has been the debate of whether or not America cherishes our diversity. On one hand, some say they are unsure about the topic. On the other hand, some people oppose that America does not cherish our diversity. My own view is that America does cherish our diversity, however it’s not a very obvious view for various reasons. Mainly because of how far we’ve come with time, but how over-generalizations has caused us to believe that we don’t. In our society today, we don’t realize the diversity shown within our country, because everything is mainly focused on how we don’t have diversity. This statement, depending on how you view it, is a complete over- generalization. In the article,
Diversity is common in America today, many people sharing a unique blend of many different collective cultural views on religion, politics, moral and ethical values. Conversely, an unsurpassed rich mixture of religions, races, and cultures, making it a wide-ranging synthesis that is unique to any other part of the world. Still, among the many religious cultures in America (secular, Christian, and other religions) Christianity still has much ground to cover with non-believers. Inasmuch, many religious cultures do not belief that Jesus is the son of God and humanities Redeemer, such as, the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons believing that Jesus Christ existed, but he is not the Son of God. Similar, the Roman Empire in the third century, “Christianity
To begin my personal informative essay on diversity in the United States, I would like to point out what information has had the most influence on how I better understand and relate to others different from how I did in the past. I do not feel as though this class taught me any more than I already know about other races and ethnicities, in terms of, how their ancestors came to America, or what hardships particular racial or ethnical groups have grown through in the group’s history in the United States. What I do feel like this class has done for me is, put into prospective of how often and frequent prejudice and
Malcolm Forbes once said, “Diversity: the art of thinking independently together.” The same diversity that shaped the United States going back to the sixteenth century when immigrants landed in North America. Diversity of people and species, but their real differences were religion, politics, economics, social issues, and the fantastic ways they dealt with those issues.
Have you ever stopped to realize how fortunate we are to be alive in such a great country? America is built off an idea of liberty, together we are a diverse group. Our veterans fought for our country to stay free, and we shouldn’t take that for granted. Diversity is giving us an ability to be our own person. The ability to be different as a society and as a group is our gift.
Throughout the world social problems such as illiterate, elderly, handicapped, minority groups, and poverty have been the biggest part in our society for many years. Some of our social problems had died off, meanwhile, they’re still many problem that we are still facing as a society. One of the major social problem we face is people being illiterate. Being illiterate is meaning a person can not read nor write, and it can also mean that a person is grammatically incorrect. There is as much as 23% of the adult population that are ignorant to basic skills of the 4th grade level. In the U.S. the ethnic group that is most affected by not being able to read or write is
The first colonists that founded our country were dominated by white folks. In today’s America , there are too many cultures to name. Diversity is essential to our nation’s society. Diversity is essential for our country being what it is known for today. While some people believe that uniformity and conformity are encouraged more, it can be argued that diversity and individuality are encouraged because people resist assimilation and people are encouraged for their differences.
I think this quote means that through our diversity as people, we have moved forward as a country because of the difference in opinions. Through differentiating opinions being voiced, we come up with better ideas and build off the thoughts of others. Furthering our society in a positive direction. This quote connects to diversity because it gives examples of diversity that have been used to better America. Diverse thoughts, cultures and religions have all contributed to where our nation is today. Personally, I chose this quote because it shows how diversity is a strength rather than a nuisance. We would not be nearly as advanced in the world today if we had not had people who differed from others. Some people may argue that diversity is a nuisance
The America I believe in is one of complete diversity. The citizens of America provide diversity of ethnics, cultures, and religious backgrounds, all of which create the complex image of what it means to be an American. Often characterized as a nation of immigrants, it’s rich heritage is in part due to consecutive waves of immigrants from all around the world. The United States has taken in more immigrants than any other country, today welcoming around 700,000 a year. Before these cultures came together, many questioned if a nation made up of varied backgrounds could succeed. As America has shown, yes a nation of varied backgrounds can succeed.
It is easy to say that the population of this country does not look the same as it once did back in the past. We have more minorities as a whole and it is changing the culture of this country. This is occurring because of mixed raced spouses and children and more immigrants from a greater variety of places than before. There has also been a major change in the average age of people living in this country. This can be because of the improvement of medicine and health care.
