What does it mean to be an “outsider?” There may be many different definitions on the Internet, or in the dictionary, but my definition of what it means to be an “outsider,” is to be excluded. It may be simple, but it is true, and it is very meaningful to those who have been outsiders at one point in their lives. I know because I was one of these people. I am not an outsider in my every day to day life in school and other aspects of life, but there have been certain places and times when I have felt like I don’t belong and one of these times was last year, when my family went to Tucson, Arizona, and Nogales, Mexico, for spring break. Now most people would say of course you would feel weird in a different place than home, but the people in Nogales have such a different lifestyle, such a different world, with a different language, which I barely know and a dangerous home where gunfights happen right down the street. They didn’t look at us as if we were tourists. They looked at us like we were snobby, rich, city folk. This is not what I usually feel like because when we go on vacation to other cities up north, I look …show more content…
To feel like an insider, is to feel embraced, and wanted which is one of the warmest feelings you can ever feel because it makes you feel special like you belong. One time when I felt like an insider especially, was in Boy Scouts, when after I was chosen for the National Honor Society in the Boy Scouts, called the Order of the Arrow, I was chosen as the Chair of Ceremonies in the Order of the Arrow, which is where we do Native American ceremonies that are symbolic and meaningful to the Society which is based on the Native Americans. I felt special and wanted, but not everyone can always feel that way which is why we need to try to make people feel wanted and feel like they belong no matter
Everyone is an outsider. I mean think of it. There are so many different groups of people in today’s world, that for one person to be involved in every aspect of those groups, they would have no free time whatsoever. Take a high school for example. You have the athletes, the academic group, the geeky group, and to add on to these, it is like there are sub groups as well. Some geeks like to play sports, some athletes are very intelligent, there is no one way to place them all into one specific box. Now when the term outsider arises, that can only be taken in context. For example, an outsider to an athlete, can be that kid that only sits outside and reads during lunch, but an outsider to that kid, is another guy who is playing basketball by
Outsiders are simply those who are misjudged for who they are as a person. The concept of being misjudged is explained through the story of Gregor in “The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka, a short story on how Gregor becomes isolated from his family and society after his metamorphosis into a bug because of how he acted prior to his transformation. Corresponding with this story, the video “Franz Kafka and Metamorphosis” from BBC explains how this narrative is accurate to how society changes people into something they do not intend on becoming. Excerpts from these two sources show how society misjudges people who are considered outsiders due to changes that disrupt familiarity and how society conforms these outsiders into people who would otherwise act in a different manner.
Outsiders are people who feel or are left out, lonely, and made fun of. The question is are outsiders just simply misunderstood and misjudged. The answer is yes. There is no such thing as an outsider. The people who are classified as outsiders are just misunderstood due to some kind of reasons. One of them may include society just doesn't accept different people. Another reason would be they haven't expressed themselves to others. One last reason is other people have different expectations.
On the contrary, by looking into other people’s situations, you learn far more about them. “Of course, their perspective has been limited by…” (Mullen 217) The author of “Elliptical” used two different viewpoints in order to show the reader how people think differently. Coming from a social standpoint, if you don’t have a lot of friends and aren’t involved in the same things as everyone else, you’re automatically casted out on your own. This truly only gives them more time to think and to learn more. They’ll soon connect with other like minded individuals and thrive. It’s only another reason that being an outsider isn’t a
What does being an outsider feel like? Is it not being by anyone, is it feeling like you have no place in the position you’re in? Or is it feeling like everybody you are around is a different species than you, and you belong back on home planet? Whatever it is, it’s different for everybody that feels that way, and eventually takes some getting used too.
It is inevitable that the concept of insiders and outsiders are prevalent in society. This is due to human nature desiring to belong. It is specifically evident in teenagers due to their social environment and fear of being an outcast in their school, therefore forming social structures according to stereotypes and their differences even leading to family conflict. Teenagers are naturally subjected to power, the dominant groups having influence over other groups. Location plays a big role too in who is considered an insider or an outsider. People are dictated into their own groups, forming barriers and a reluctance to accept others. The concept of insiders and outsiders among teenagers are demonstrated in the novel ‘Whisper’ by Chrissie
There are many different perspectives on what an Outsider is. The term outsiders is used to portray a social group of people called the greasers that do not necessarily fit in with the community or other people. The greasers are poor, most of them have dropped out of school , and they do not live in the best conditions as the socs do. There are many outsiders in the book, but three people that immediately come to my that could fit the definition of outsiders are Ponyboy, Dally, and Cherry.
According to this article, new immigrants are considered as outsiders in the United States. Even though there is no clear line defining the outsiders and the insider 's immigrants, those immigrants who have been staying for long in U.S are considered to be more of insiders than the new ones. For a new immigrant to be considered as an insider’s they, need to gain a status, learn a shared language, and perceptions when it comes to immigrants inclusions in the society.
Being an outsider is purely based on the criteria of race, religion, gender, beliefs, values, language, culture and the list could go on. Outsiders do not have the same opportunities as the insiders, they are not as respected by society due to discrimination and lack of respect for their values. Michael Jackson and Barack Obama are both idols of this disturbing occurrence. The American Outsider is a stereotypical checklist that brainwashes those who are followers. Those who are petrified of going against society and understanding that it is wrong to do such cruel things to someone like themselves. Those who have been excluded or detached from the world they are living due to the differences and sameness of others do not deserve to be treated
Was there ever a time in your life where you felt like a stranger or an outsider? Well I have, it was when I first transferred to Nanakuli High and Intermediate School what made it feel more left out was that it was already deep into the school year my 8th grade 4th quarter. I felt left out and felt like I would just be jumping into somebody group and it felt weird who knew if they wanted to hang with me or not. But without it I wouldn’t be who I am today.
The time I felt like an outsider was the time I came to worland high school I came from the city with gangs drugs and all sorts of stuff that was not here the reason why I felt like an outsider is because every one was into big trucks, chewing tobacco, and wearing cowboy clothes while I on the other hand was into skate boarding, gangs, marijuana I no longer like gangs or marijuana I like to skate board and play video games and mod/hack onto online games and phones the way I felt horrible and pissed off because I couldn't find anyone that was interested in the same stuff I was into and in the city I was taught to hate hill belly's and red necks and that sort of stuff so I guess I hated it from the start then it just got worst the teachers I had
We all know those people, the people who don’t really seem to find their place in the world. These people are called outsiders. Some may say that outsiders have no use or value to society. However outsiders do have a great value in society and in the paragraphs below you will be shown that one, these people can have value because they have great ideas and look at the big picture instead of looking at the small things two, they do not face the stress of having to fit in, and three they share their unbiased opinions without fear of being excluded. In the following paragraphs you will learn just a few of the many values of an outsider.
Every day, you might see that one person that does not seem to fit in with the crowd, but that does not mean that there is something wrong with them. These people are called ‘outsiders’, and they may seem like an odd group to keep around, but these people do have value in society. Outsiders can think of things that the regulars might never think of, they have different skills that someone else needs for a specific job, and outsiders add to your overall life by making things interesting and different than if everyone was the same.
Have you ever felt like an outsider? Well everyone feels the same. History was made and drastically changed by people who were once outsiders and outcasts. Einstein, De Vinci, Galileo, and more were all eccentric and outcasts in their childhood and even into their adulthood, they were considered outsiders. Being an outsider/outcast is a universal part of human experience because of individuality, human nature, and passion to become different from others.
Outsiders can become what they are from their circumstances and positions they were born into. In London, there was a man that felt completely alone, “lonely enough to cry in my hotel bed one night as I kept thinking, “I am the only Indian in this country right now. I am the only Indian within a five thousand-mile circle.” (Alexie 214) This man thought that he was all alone but he ended up finding one of his childhood friends through the help of his family. No matter how alone people feel, there's always somebody that relates to what you’re going through or how you feel. “Once my little sister ran barefoot across the hot sand for a taste. My mother roared like the ocean. “No. No. It’s their beach. It’s their beach.” (Mora 218) In Fences the family is native to the very tourist area. The mother freaked out when her younger daughter ran
