Abortion is a woman’s right. Women have the choice to not want to have a baby because of their own reasons. It’s their body, and they can do whatever they want with it. A solution is to spread the word to people and ask to protest with pro-choice activists. In the article, “What Women’s Lives are Like When Abortion is a Crime,” Alice Driver explains the lives of women when abortion is a crime to them instead of a right. Her argument is towards that fact the House of Representatives passed the “Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act”, which abortion is considered a crime. People who are register to vote can help use their vote to revoke the act. Having the right to have an abortion is important because personally it is my right to do whatever I want with my body. Just like the women who are not capable of having a child, rape/incest victims, transgender, and are simply not ready. I’ve seen family members who have had abortions and I sometimes wonder what their life would be if they didn’t. They are now mothers and even through it’s hard to raise another, they were ready. In the article, “Becoming a Mother Made Me Even More Pro-Choice,” Maureen Shaw explains how she fully understands why people fight for pro-choice and points how her being a mother made her more of a supporter because of it. She proves the reason is not only because of the idea of abortion everyone is scared about, financial matters, avoiding to be a single mother, or simply not being ready but that it’s because “they respect children and motherhood” (Shaw). To make people understand the meaning of abortion and why it’s so important is the first
The issue of abortion has always been a controversial one for citizens of the United States. Abortion is the practice of terminating a pregnancy after the embryo has been planted in the uterus (Abortion). An individual’s stance on this controversial issue categorizes them into one of two very different groups. An individual who feels that a woman should not have an abortion- due to moral or religious views- is said to be “pro-life”. Coincidently, those who feel that a woman should have the right to choose abortion are said to be “pro-choice”. “Pro-life” supporters point to the practice of abortion as an immoral one. Supporters state abortion is immoral because it takes away the rights of the unborn fetus, since activists consider human
Before women had rights to decide whether they could keep their baby, some states didn’t allow abortion, therefore requiring women to give birth to their child. In today’s current issues, abortion is still a controversial subject with millions of people supporting it or not supporting it. Every woman has the right to make changes to her own physical body, and those rights should not be taken away, according to the constitution. In the very famous case in 1973, “Roe v. Wade”, the United States Supreme Court legalized abortion throughout the first trimester of pregnancy. In the article, “Roe’s Pro-Life Legacy”, it is explained how after this movement, the right to abortion, lives have changed and led to lower abortion rates (Sheilds 2013.)
Out of all modern social controversies, perhaps the most heated controversy is that of abortion. In today’s society you are either a Pro-life or a Pro-choice, there is not a middle ground. Pro-life are individuals who believe abortion is immoral and should be stop for the wellbeing of women and unborn babies. In contrast, the Pro-choice individuals do not necessarily promote abortion, they just believe women should be the ones to make decisions over their bodies and health. Although the two main sides of the abortion debate have concerns for human life, pro-life activists worries more about the fetus and morals, a clear difference from the pro-choice that worries more for the women and their rights. Based on the points I explored, the pro-choice arguments are stronger than pro-life arguments. Most of both groups arguments comes from peer-reviewed researches from well-known sources to support each individual concept. Effects on women,socio-politics, and fetus are some of the main point of conflicts between the pro-life and pro-choice advocates.
Roe vs. Wade case was a ground-breaking landmark case because it gave a woman the right to choose. Since then landmark cases and legislation restricted a woman from having an abortion. The rights of the unborn are the reason why a woman's rights to have an abortion are being eroded. In addition, violent events have occurred because a woman has a right to have an abortion. Clearly, this topic has affected the political, health, social, and religious, aspects of our society. Currently, women are choosing not to have an abortion. The sentiment is so strong that a Harris poll showed that 72% of Americans say abortion should be illegal after the first 3 months of pregnancy. To make this point, abortion rates are down in the states where the abortion
For many years, abortion has been vexed issue in the United States that conjures strong emotions on both sides. It is a moral issue that tears some people into two groups Pro-life and Pro-choice. Those who are Pro-life state that no matter what the reason behind it, such violent action is murder and should not be executed. On the other hand, the Pro-choice advocates are more respectful of women's rights to take such action; they believe it is their own personal decision since they are the ones who are going to take care of the child, not the law or morality. Despite society's evolving moral standards, the controversy surrounding abortion and women’s' rights still divides our nation. So why did I visit a Planned Parenthood for the first time in my life? Because I was confused as to what is the real face of the people gathered outside the abortion clinic was.
Abortion has been a controversial topic and fluctuated in-and-out of political discussions for decades, but has started to become a more popular debate topic as of late. People have debated between “Pro-Choice”, a woman’s right to choose, as well as “Pro-Life”, strictly anti-abortion, as well as the lawmakers part in recognizing the issue. A Harvard College newspaper printed an opinion-based article by Tanya Luhrmann for Abortion Rights Action Week called, The Pro-Choice Argument. The author claims that a powerful part of American life is the experience of being a mother, and that each side, “Pro-Choice” and “Pro-Life”, feels attacked from one another affecting the mother and child relationship.
In her article “How to Really Defend Planned Parenthood” (NY Times, 8/5/15) Katha Pollitt asserts that the pro-choice movement is consistently under fire due to faults in its defense, and that we, as supporters, must find ways to carefully and accurately explain why both society and the individual benefit from voluntary motherhood. She uses statistics displaying a sizable number of women receiving abortions, yet a very miniscule amount speaking up in defense of Planned Parenthood, to support her claims and to suggest that the voices of the 95% who felt they made the right decision are a potentially vital resource to the movement. Pollitt’s purpose is to highlight the necessity of public support in order to inspire all who have benefitted from
Pro-choice has been a major topic ever since the women’s movements started in the early 1970’s, a question sometimes asked is that, if part of the population are so pro-life and worry about protecting a fetus, how come when the child is conceived they suddenly bash at you for having that unwanted child anyways, and that is hypocritical. In this essay, details include would be why people choose to be pro-choice, NARAL Pro-Choice America, the battle for reproductive justice for women and their right to make decisions for their body, advocates that are pro-choice, proposals for a pro-choice government, and Tomi Lahren being fired for stating she was pro-choice.
With abortion only concerning a woman's body it should be up to that woman if she chooses to get the abortion, not anyone else's. They have the right “to participate equally in the economic and social life of the Nation” but as Supreme Justice court Sandra Day O'Connor wrote that by even taking away the option to have the abortion is affecting “their ability to control their reproductive lives.” which is invitation of them even getting to decide their life course. Also stated in this
In 1973, the US Supreme Court declared abortion a nationwide fundamental right through a trial called Roe vs. Wade and protected this right underneath the Fourteenth Amendment, more specifically, the right to privacy. A basic human right, especially one outlined by the Supreme Court, must never run at risk or threat chiefly because not everyone agrees with it. Under no circumstances should a pregnancy ever adjudge mandatory. Abortion is a Constitutional right and as a nation we must fight to give the right and freedom of safe abortions to women all around the nation, make birth control and sex education accessible to women, and raise awareness about the topic itself. We all live our lives as we please all in accordance to the law, but when it comes to abortion people start to judge and try to regulate how others live and interfere in their personal choices. We live in a country based on freedoms, and women have and should continue to have the freedom to the choice of an abortion. A woman’s right to choose abortion is a fundamental right recognized by the US Supreme Court. The courts also have a category of classes called the ‘near-suspect’ classes, which include gender. Gender deserves protection from possible discrimination at the hands of the majority. Women constitute a majority of American’s and have been discriminated in the past. The Landmark case Roe v. Wade was decided and remains the law of the land. Making laws against abortions don’t stop abortions from happening; they just make it less safe, which in many cases leads to death. Therefore idea of supporting pro-life is contradictory, this is why the nation should be pro-choice. No child should be brought into this world where they are not wanted or are not able to live a normal life. Most people who are against abortion will never even become pregnant, so they should not be making laws against it. Pregnancy is a private and personal matter. Outlawing abortion is discriminatory and unfortunately abortions are being transformed from a right to a privilege for most women.
The extremists of pro-life are exceedingly adamant on persuading women to not abort the fetuses. These extremists invade women’s privacies and undermined women’s freedoms on decisions making. The pro-life advocates are simply third parties who claims that they are trying to save lives; however, their earnest intentions cannot outweigh the consequences that sometimes comes with keeping the fetus. For example, a sixteen year old female became impregnated by her seventeenth year old boyfriend. Her family’s financial background exhibit that they have a low income, and same goes for her boyfriend. On top of that her family have history of drug and physical abuse. The sixteen year old female decided that she is currently incapable of raising a child; therefore, she decided to go to Planned Parenthood. On the way there she was bombarded by protesters who are against Planned Parenthood and abortions. They convinced her to keep the baby. Eventually she gave birth; however, it was difficult for her to raise her newborn due to the environment that she was raised in. By giving birth to her baby, the mother now have to face with financial struggles, hardships, and her youth was taken from her. Not only is it unfair for the mother, but it is cruel to bring a child in the world without stability, financial means, and support to take care and raise the child. The third parties or the pro-life advocates will no longer be there to support her, because all they cared about was “saving” a life.
In today’s society, the topic of abortion has become the center of many heated debates all across the country and all over our state. This subject matter has been one of much concern and has completely divided the citizens of the United States of America. This issue causes so much controversy because it can easily be viewed from multiple perspectives going from “it is the choice of the mother” all the way to “it is the murder of a new life.” No matter what stance someone takes on this, everyone can agree that this is a pressing issue in the United States because it challenges the traditional way of thinking that if a mother is pregnant, she must have her child. This is an issue that has haunted and will continue to haunt people all across our
Abortion has been one of the hottest topics concerning women’s health care and reproductive rights. Tune into any presidential debate and you’ll notice candidates spending as much time discussing the topic as immigration, foreign policy, climate change, and gun control. There are a lot of misconceptions about the pro-choice movement but it can be explained in very simple terms. Being pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion, it simply means accepting that women have the choice to choose what they do with their bodies, not the government or anyone else. I believe strongly in this issue and believe that we should look at our past and not go back to a time where women did not have the same rights as men over their bodies. We are trying to become equal, not return to an era of submission. No man or government should have the power to control a women’s body; every person has a right to his/her own body. Abortion should be kept an easy, accessible, safe, and legal option for all women regardless of beliefs. We should be taking strides forward toward equality, not steps back. In the mid-twentieth century, second wave feminists saw major struggles of women and sought to radically improve and change the security of women and reproductive rights. We have fought hard for many of the rights we have today, but everyday we are challenged by those who want to oppose and erase our efforts.
The right to an abortion is a right that women should have. Many women face difficult situations where they find themselves needing to have an abortion. It is up to a woman to choose what is best, according to her, for her life. Modifications to one’s body is allowed, and abortion is just another modification. Women should build one another and not tear each other down by judging each other’s decisions. Women, who decide either to have an abortion, make a life-changing decision that everyone should
