I.Intro
A.Attention Getter: How many of you like to focus on what’s important? “Life is like a Camera. You focus on what’s important and capture the good times. Develop from the negative and if things don’t work out take another shot.” - Unknown Author
B.Revealed Object and Speaker Credibility: A camera represents many things in the photography culture and, as someone who doesn’t consider themselves a photographer but rather a hobbyist photographer, I think it’s important that people be educated about this creative culture.
C.Thesis: By learning more about a camera, you will have a greater understanding of the photography culture.
D.Preview of Main Points: First, I will discuss the types of cameras there are, how it is significant, and how it promotes creativity in the photography culture. Then, I will discuss how I identify with both this culture, and the camera.
II. Body
A.Main Point 1: There are many types of cameras and they are a symbol of the Photography culture.
1.Sub-point 1: Cameras have been around since the 1500s. The first type of camera invented was the pinhole camera, invented by Alhazen (Al-Haytham). Since the culture combines different types of cameras, each type of camera still has significance. Originally, the first camera invented was the pinhole camera. The significance of the of the pinhole camera led to other cameras being invented (Roll-film cameras, 35mm still cameras, Polaroid cameras, Point-and-shoot autofocus cameras) which led to
Photography, meaning “drawing with lights” in Greek, is an art as well as a science of capturing light and storing it on a medium with unprecedented accuracy. Yet, up until the late 18th century, history was mainly recorded through the techniques of painting and the press. These mediums unarguably contained a certain degree of a truth, though, it was not uncommon for events, such as war to be composed with glorified details, or an unfavorable bias from the artist at hand. Beginning in the 1830’s, cameras provided a revolutionary solution by combining the advancements in optics and chemistry. Consequently, the new medium of photography was established and forever changed how history would be visually captured. Unlike other methods, photography
Photographs have been circling the world for years now . There are many different types of cameras, but only some have changed and revolutionized the world. The history behind them and the history it has captured throughout the years has impacted the world in numerous ways. It is very important to know how certain things like lighting and angle affect the outcome of photographs. To be able to capture a perfect photograph one will have to understand how lighting , angle , third rule affect a photograph. Not only are there different types of ways to take photographs but different types of photography.
For the historical photographer part of my assignment, I choose photographer Edward S. Curtis. The reason I decided to choice Mr. Curtis and his works is that he help preserve and document accurate depictions of Native Americans at a time when most of society had only a limited knowledge of what Native Americans culture looked like. In addition, nearly all of his work from an artistic standpoint looks breathtaking; almost like a painting expert, it is photography. Therefore, the next the paragraph I will discussed his works, message in his work, and my thoughts on them.
Since the camera was invented in 1826, it has been used to document everything from social injustice, inequality, famine, war, and human rights abuses to uplifting scenes of humanity, brotherhood, victory, love and hope (Ferdous). Throughout the years society has come to realize the true potential of a photograph and its ability to acknowledge the truth through intense and thought provoking imagery. The camera has helped journalists be able to connect with society in a way that was unique. The creation of the camera gave journalist the ability to communicate through the use of pictures. This newly found aspect made it possible for others to see exactly what the photographer has seen. With this ability photojournalism was created.
A reoccurring topic of the essays, concerning photography, discussed during the course is the future of professional photographers/photojournalists. Some believe that the easily accessible spread of amateur photography can and has put a strain on the works of professionals. However, with magazines such as National Geographic still in print after over a century, it raises some questions. Though the spread of information, and thus photography, has increased the platforms and need for professional photographers and photojournalists still exists.
It is a debate that has been going on for years and years, especially in the twenty first century, of which medium in photography is superior, Film or Digital, Personally I use both, I will be discussing the issue over the length of this paper. Going through positives and negatives around both the processes, and techniques associated with the forms of photography.
Sense the invention of the camera in 1826 photography has been used to document everything from family portraits, social injustice, sporting events, world news, expressions of joy and sorrow, and hundreds of monumental moments. The camera has given man the power to reveal the truth visually. Throughout history photographs have made enormous impacts on social consciousness and ultimately shaped public opinion on many pressing issues in society. Although photography is often considered a casual pastime, the invention of the camera has contributed to many aspects of history, science, and other important pieces of todays world.
Certain mile stones in taking pictures during the first two decades of photography were marked by rapid commercialization and many photographers bowed to the commerciality and uninspired demands of their customers, however there were those who were separating themselves from the bustling photographic factories and portrait studios and instead immersed themselves into a new class of “artist” by using the camera to express creative photographic visions. Whether it was used in society, documentation, or art the camera was obviously used, and are used to this day.
My thesis will be talking about photography before it was invented which means that how people were able to have a photograph back then, and how was the camera invented and it will be including the development of photography. Moreover, my thesis will be talking about what is the Camera Obscura, Daguerreotype, Collotype, Collodion Process, Polaroid in Colour, and the First Digital
Photography in The Memory Keeper’s Daughter Famous fashion designer and photographer, Karl Lagerfeld, once pointed out that the best thing about photography is that, “[photographs] capture a moment that is gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” This quote embodies the thoughts of Dr. David Henry throughout The Memory Keeper’s Daughter. Photographs are a symbol of the doctor’s hidden love for his family members.
Photography is a word derived from the Greek words photos light and to draw. A scientist called Sir John F.W. Herschel, which was in 1839, first used the word. It was a method which was all about recording images by using light or radiation on a sensitive material. The first known camera was created by Alhazen also known as who lived around 100AD he invented the first pinhole camera this camera was used to capture the movement of the sun. Photography was explained to be the science and art of documenting photographs by capturing light on a light sensitive material which included film or an electronic sensor. Light could be reflected from objects which could expose a chemical or electronic material during a timed exposure which is typically used through a camera which can store the information chemically or electronically. The first photograph was take in 1827 taken by Joseph Nicephore Niepce who made the first photograph
Since its inception, photography has been used to capture moments in time all around the world. This wonderful technology has existed since ancient times, and has only improved in recent history, changing society in the process.
Until recently, at least, it was possible to define photography as a process involving optics, light sensitive material and the chemical processing of this material to produce prints or slides. Today though, that definition is subject to change. Technological innovations…are shifting photography from its original chemical basis towards electronics… It is not overstating it to say that the advent of this new technology is changing the very nature of photography, as we have known it. (Bode and Wombell 1991)
Cameras are to photographers as paints and brushers are to painters. With the right angle, lighting, and composition, a photographer can turn a simple scene into a work of art. Cameras capture moments that would otherwise be lost, and allows them to be saved and shared. They create photos which reveal how beautiful life is; they tell a wordless story. Each photographer has their own favorites, own style, and own experiences which call for certain types of cameras. The most popular cameras are Point-and-Shoot, DSLR, and SLR.
With digital, a significant shift in mind-set occurred in the meanings associated with cameras. Rather than being identified as a piece of purely photographic equipment, digital cameras came to be seen as electronic gadgets.
