Have you ever wondered what the difference was between hookah and cigarettes? I have many times, being a person that occasionally indulges in hookah smoking, I was always curious to find out. Some of the questions I would ask myself, like which is more popular, which one is worse for you, what they are made of besides the obvious tobacco, and what the long term effects of both are. So this informative essay will be answering these very questions. Tobacco has been around for a long time, dating as far back as the Mayans in 600 to 900 A.D. (Unit 1: History of Tobacco, Worlded.org). In recent years tobacco has become much more popular with the younger generation such as college students, mainly in the hookah style (“The Dangers of Hookah …show more content…
(“What’s in a Cigarette?”, lung.org) Some of the only clear differences between the two are their ingredients. Cigarettes are made up of around 600 ingredients some of which are arsenic (used in rat poison), lead (used in batteries), and tar (used to pave roads), just to name a few. When a cigarette is burned it can create upwards of 7,000 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer (“What’s in a Cigarette?”, lung.org). Hookah may not have all the same ingredients as cigarettes, mainly just made of tobacco and artificial flavors, but it can still be just as deadly. Hookah users can faces some of the same health risks as cigarette users, oral cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer are just some of them (“Hookah Smoking No Less Harmful Than Cigarettes”, Study Finds, huffingtonpost.com). Researchers from University of California, San Francisco, found in a study that the participants inhaled less nicotine in hookah, but levels of benzene byproducts and carbon monoxide were more than double that of cigarette smoke. So it’s almost like there is no lesser of two evils really because both have very similar and deadly lasting effects. To conclude, there are many similarities between cigarettes and hookah, more than you may have known prior to reading this essay. Either way you look at it they both are unhealthy for you and can cause an array of long term health effects, some of which causing death. Neither is better
pointed that the current prevalence of hookah among twelve graders were about 17%. If the increase tobacco purchasing age policy were in place, the number would be decreased to 13%. This would gradually take place in ten years after the implementation of the policy. The results were the same if applied to other types of tobacco. For example, the prevalence of cigarettes would be reduced from 15% to 12% under the new policy (Buice, M. E., 2014).
Cigarette contains different poisonous ingredients, and nicotine is the one that creates addiction and leads to different diseases. Smoking cigarette is one of the worst problems our world is facing and the main reason for this term to be stressful is its consequence. Cigarette can cause different diseases that can directly or indirectly lead to death; “tobacco use is responsible for nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the united states” (cigarette smoking). Most of the time this consequence highly exists on young smokers or victims can be affected by the consequence because they started smoking young. In the United States 18 is the legal age for smoking cigarette and people are still using this law, but it is now the right time for a
“How bad is vaping compared to smoking? Should it be banned entirely? Is it more dangerous, is it better?” Are a few major questions one thinks about vaping. The mentality of nicotine addiction and toxic chemicals that lead to cancer are what concerns the public. With vaping on the high rise of popularity, the vaping industry is collectively growing bigger with more than 3500’s shops in counting and worth billions. Vaping history goes far back but just because it has a history doesn’t make it all good. Vaping dates back to the 5th century B.C. of Egypt, where they heated up herbs on hot stones to vape on. Shisha’s or heard by the name of Hookahs came 1500 years ago in India and have spread in popularity everywhere and many places in the United States just like the e-cigarette. The idea of the e-cigarettes was made 2000’s but was not heard of until the Chinese company Hon Lik introduced them in the 2000’s, becoming a big hit in the US in 2007. Even though the creator from Hon Lik Co. had good intentions for the making of e-cigarette due to his father dying of lung cancer from smoking, vaping is still a possible force of destruction. “Despite making great strides to reduce smoking, tobacco is still our biggest killer. Our region has always kept an open mind towards using electronic cigarettes as we can see the massive potential health benefits from switching” states Lisa Surtees, acting director at Fresh Smoke Free North East. If at all compared to smoking, vaping is the safer

Apparently, the addicted class has kept on rising amongst the ethnic group despite the increased awareness. The compelling reasons for smoking that they usually have is that tobacco has some benefits such as being an antiseptic, astringent, assisting in digestion or sleep as well as for driving away

Water-pipe smoking has become increasingly popular in the United States. The presentation given by Josh Samuel was unique in the way that he wasn’t opposing banning the use of these alternative products indoors, but instead, made the statement that there is a differentiation between hookah and electronic cigarettes. It’s interesting because he was correct when stating the claim that every speaker has combined the two under the same policy ban when they are two completely different products with different contributing effects.

Another key point is that there are alternative to smoking cigarettes; electronic cigarettes are battery-operated devices which use cartridges filled with nicotine, flavor and chemicals to convert them into a vapor that is inhaled, these chemicals contain cancer causing as well as the same compound used in antifreeze. Hookah and e-cigarettes are not regulated by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. It is not known how safe they are as opposed to regular cigarettes. In August 2016, new rules mandate that hookah’s and e-cigarettes must be approved by FDA and contain health warnings. In addition to regular cigarettes, people become dependent on tobacco by smoking. Hookahs are water pipes used to smoke tobacco through a tube with a tapered mouthpiece. Many people think they are safer because the smoke is cooled as it passes through the water. Black resinous gunk builds up in the hookah tube, which suggests that this is a safer option. This gunk also enters the user’s mouth and lungs. Experts believe that hookahs are not safer than cigarettes. Germs are also shared as hookahs are passed from user to user. (Vaping Daily)
