With its unique, interactive, and even shocking storyline, minimalist gameplay, and plot twist, Portal creates a game experience like no other video game. While the gameplay is rather simple, the game itself is rather brilliant, especially with its storyline. Portal also introduces aspects of gender issues and feminism, with the only playable character being a female.
At its core, Portal is a game made up entirely of puzzles, increasing in complexity as the player passes each level. Each level or puzzle is surprising, focused, and concise. The basic mechanic of Portal is simple but brilliant. It is a first person shooter game and you are playing as the main character and are equipped with a Portal gun. The Portal gun makes essentially makes

There are definitely other games with good writing and a captivating storyline, but Portal was one of the first to actually take advantage of the fact that it was a video game for its story. Portal is a video game story, as opposed to just a story within a game. Portal only ever could be a video game, rather than be able to be turned into or created from a book or movie. The dialogue itself also sets Portal apart from many other games. Glados’ dry and sarcastic lines are actually rather funny, and after playing the game for a second time, her lines and her character progression make a lot more …show more content…
Portal effectively adapts and even reinvents the first person shooter aspects of its genre in a manner that empowers females and a feminine character rather than subjugating the female to objectification by the male gaze. Typically the playable first person shooter characters in games are men, and even if there is a female option, she seems to serve towards the interest of men and is most likely scantily clad and very sexualized. Chell is wearing an orange jumpsuit and is by no means sexualized. As the player, you aren’t even aware that you are playing as a female character until well into the game when you see a glimpse of yourself through a portal. Portal creates a game experience like no other video game, and in turn sets itself apart from so many other video games and especially first person, and first person shooter games, with its interactive gameplay and puzzle solving, unique storyline, shocking plot twist, and use of a non sexualized female main
Tom Bissell, in his essay, “Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter” has described video games and how they are unique and different from movies, books, or even interactive films. Bissell says “I came to accept that games were incompetent with almost every aspect of what I would call traditional narrative.” This is showing the readers that even though there is a plot and story line, as characters can control and alter the story line or outcome by what you do or see throughout the game.

73. In virtual space, people in remote locations can hold meetings, share information and files, make plans, and solve problems together.
They can be a vicarious trip through an imaginative landscape, a daring campaign with a digital army, or a short waltz through a puzzling world. Enjoying this should not be seen as shameful or odd, but rather as a supplement to people’s lives, a short vacation from they’re often harsh and boring world. But most of all, McGonigal has opened the door for alternate reality gaming and given humanity a potential medium that will improve daily human interaction with

Ready Player One is made by Ernest Cline is his first novel made in 2011. Ernest Cline says that he is a "screenwriter, spoken-word artist, and full-time geek" and he currently lives in Austin, Texas with his wife and his daughter. Throughout the book's journey he had many different variations of the story. Speaking of the story, in the year 2044 the world isn't a great place to live in. The energy crisis is a large threat, people are starving, and a many people are in poverty. Even though the world isn't in the best place in the world, there is one thing that people enjoy. It's called OASIS, it stands for Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation. This device is used as a multi platform, massively multiplayer, open
It runs on the creation engine, which stems from the original Gamebyro engine. It has a trading system where that allows treasure to be found and sold to local vendors, blacksmiths, or mages. It has a unique leveling system that put points into stuff such as two-handed weapons, one-handed weapons, shields, heavy armor, and light armor. The player's character can pickpocket people, open doors, and crates with lockpicks. This game has a quest system that allows the choice of which quests show up on the map; some are time sensitive.
Which makes me think back to Destiny, a game with a barebones story and an amazingly fun gameplay. My fondest memory of the game is easily the Vault of Glass raid where me and five other players navigated a treacherous maze and took on – and defeated – Atheon. Sure, the level design and all is fantastic, but what makes it so great were the folks I teamed up with: our banter and teamwork. That’s something wonderfully special that was not intended by the game’s framework, but rather encouraged and permitted.
Open world game is the game that players can go around the world without limitation. It is one of popular game genre for people to explore the game, but it is also one of the hardest concept for game developer because the game requires to show various places with no repetitive contents. For example, The Division, open world third-person shooter game in 2016, successfully showed destroyed New York City with natural color, but it failed to give various contents with good gaming experience. Another example, No Mans Sky, open world action adventure game, had a huge world with different planets, but it failed to show different atmosphere of environments. However, Breath of the Wild solves these problems well. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Hob is an idea conceptualized in a cabin by Runic president Marsh Lefler and company that has people curious and interested. When you sit and think about the idea of an Open-world platforming, with no dialogue and puzzle solving along with interactive and fluid combat and an upgrade system that also tells your story as the protagonist. One of their first questions was "can we technically make this game?" and the answer is yes. If you've played Torchlight you are already pretty familiar with their in-house engine "Ogre 3d" and how it has been updated and played with for Torchlight 2. Now we get to see the newest iteration in Hob, which looks to set itself apart from Runic games previous award-winning titles.

The game that I decided to use for this week is a video game, Dragon Age: Origins. It’s the first in a trilogy of games that focus on a fantasy setting. The player can choose from seven different characters with their own origin stories, as they begin their pathway to be the “Hero of Ferleden”. Your characters gain friendships and enemies as they continue their journey. The player’s character must go to different groups and try to get their help to end the overwhelming number of infected monsters. Every group the player faces offers choices that affects how his or her friends look at them. If the player makes a decision that one of your friends doesn’t like, they will “disapprove”. The player can also pursue a romance with some of these characters.
Gone Home is a game that forsakes many of the common conventions of video games in favor of a more unique, highly-narrative-driven experience. Sacrificing some mechanics that are often driving forces in interactive experiences produces a particular level of challenge for this purpose, as there are ultimately fewer tools for the developer to work with when invoking key aspects of engagement theory. There is no combat, nor is the possibility of player death present to influence the stakes that help drive the game. Instead, subtle narrative elements and effective use of environment design take the wheel.
