Thomas „Stonewall“ Jackson was one of the most famous people that participated in the American Civil War, great military tactician and successful general of the Confederacy. He led Confederate troops at Manassas, Antietam and Fredericksburg. He was accidently killed by his own troops at the Battle of Chancellorsville.
Childhood
Stonewall Jackson was born on January 21, 1824, in Clarksburg, West Virginia. His father was a lawyer and his mother had four children, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was her third one. After finishing local schools, in 1842 he enrolled in the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York.
Mexican American War
Jackson graduated from West Point, and right after that he was sent to Mexico to fight in the Mexican-American War. Jackson quickly proved his bravery and skills on the battlefield, when he was serving under General Winfield Scott. In the Mexican-American, it was the first time Stonewall Jackson met Robert E. Lee, with whom he will one day be in Confederate military forces fighting against the Union. In 1846 the Mexican-American War ended, and Jackson was promoted to brevet major and honored as a war hero. After the war, he continued to serve in the military in New York and Florida for a couple years.

This left himself, his mother and a younger sister. His mother remarried and fell into debt with her more current husband. Most Famous for his military career he would first serve at the age of only 13 in the Revolutionary War, where he would join the Patriots and be captured by the British. Jackson would be the only survivor of his family after the Revolutionary War, but that wouldn’t stop him. After the Revolutionary War Jackson would go to North Carolina to pursue a career in law. Andrew Jackson greatest military accomplishments would be during the War of 1812. During the war of 1812 Jacksons army would give him the nickname “Old Hickory” for being as tough as an old hickory tree. Jackson would engage in a few battles with the Creek Indians, allies of the British with a final victory at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. Jackson would be named a war hero with the victory over the British, at the Battle of New Orleans, which forced the British to withdraw from the war.
During his military as well as academic career, Jackson had many successes one of which was becoming a professor of artillery at Virginia Military Institute (Davis). Also Jackson commanded an army of roughly 17,000 men at the Battle of Bull Run and defended and defeated an army of almost 70,000 men (Davis). Jackson’s nickname “Stonewall” came from a battle where he and his army repelled and advancing Union force of men. Andrew Jackson Andrew Jackson, born in 1767 was a child of poor Scotch-Irish immigrants. He ended up with enough education to be qualified to practice law. Jackson’s father died before he was born. The Revolutionary War started soon after he was born. It was very bloody in the wild and poor country where they lived. Jackson at the age of 13, joined a regiment. He was captured by the British, was wounded and nearly killed by a sword to the face for not polishing a British officers boots. He and his brother, imprisoned together, caught smallpox. Jackson took part in many wars; the first war he fought in was the war of Hanging rock which was against the British. He would later go on to battle in small skirmishes against British symthisizers and tories. Andrew was not fighting those wars alone, he had his country on his side but he also had is older brothers to look up to. He fought with them until his oldest brother was killed in action when Jackson was just 13. Later on him and his brother were both captured and taken as prisoners. They were able to get out of jail and go free, but that did not last to long. Andrew’s brother died shortly after from small pox, both him and his brother were infected while they were in prison. This would not be the last battle Andrew would fight in though, even though not to long after his mother was killed while she was helping in the war, he would go onto be one of the greatest war hero’s of all time. After West Point, Jackson served in the Mexican American War where he would meet his friend and future commander, General Robert E. Lee. When the war ended, he bounced from Fort Hamilton in New York and Fort Meade in Florida. Eventually, though, he resigned his commission to accept a teaching position at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia in 1851. During this time, he married and lost a wife in childbirth and remarried again. If not for the onset of the Civil War, he may have remained at VMI and most likely faded into obscurity.
LTG Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson graduated from West Point in 1846 and saw battle in the Mexican-American War. Jackson commanded the Second Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia and took his wing into the Battle of Antietam on 17 September 1862.
In 1801 Andrew Jackson was selected to be the commander of the Tennessee militia. His military experience helped him in the war of 1812, when he won against the creeks Indians at horseshoe bend. By winning that battle he had gained twenty million acres, which is the present day Georgia and Alabama. After what Andrew Jackson has done to his nation he was promoted to a major general. After a couple years he was named a national hero, because of his tremendous win against the British. When he had led five thousand soldiers to victory against seven thousand five hundred British, in New Orleans. After his success he received a gold medal. Also his troops had nicknamed him old hickory, because it was said that Andrew Jackson was “as tough as old hickory wood” (pg 1). In 1817 Jackson had his first Seminole war, and he captured the Pensacola, which is in Florida, then he went on to capture Spanish territory. By capturing that area he became the military governor of Florida, because he overthrew the previous governor, who was José Masot, who was secretly helping out the Indians in wars. So that title of being a governor of Florida, he had held for ten months.
Andrew Jackson was born Friday March 15, 1767. He was raised in Waxhaw, North Carolina. His parents had three children, him, Hugh, and Robert. Before he was born they and his parents emigrated from Ireland almost two years before he was born. He was named after his father that had died before he was born.
In the eastern front of U.S. Civil War there were two men who stood above the rest. Robert E. Lee was the commanding general of the Army of Northern Virginia. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson commanded the Army of the Shenandoah. The military genius of these two men was far beyond that of any Union or Confederate officer in the east. History tells us that Robert E. Lee was one of the greatest commanding officers in history. History only tells us that Jackson was brave and stood like a stonewall at the First Battle of Manassas Junction, but was Jackson as good a commander as Lee?
