‘The Help’ directed by Tate Taylor is a film about African-American (colored) people serving the white Americans (whites). Minny and Aibileen are mothers working as maids to earn money for their families. Young American, Skeeter (Emma Stone) is a writer and aspiring journalist wishing to write a book about ‘The Help’ in Jackson. She writes a book about the helps perspective and wishes for equality and change. This was sparked by her friends negative and discriminating attitude towards the maids.

According to the whites, the colored, “carry different diseases than we do”. This resulted in many whites getting toilets specifically for the coloured. Aibileen, the narrator of ‘The Help’, told her story to Skeeter with a brave but frightened attitude. She …show more content…

The film is focused on the survival and strength of the coloured, not about wealth and happiness of the whites. Aibileen broken heartedly said “They killed my son”. This shows the strength of one coloured woman. Preacher Green from the local church said “Courage isn't just about being brave, it’s about overcoming fear and daring to do what is right in your mind”. Having the courage and bravery is what Aibileen and 32 other maids were doing. They were unwelcomed in white houses unless they are working, if they are working they do not get respected. Courage is speaking up for what is right, in this case it is telling Skeeter their stories of being a maid. I believe that courage is an important concept to have, as a girl of the white and blue, teachers are always telling us, ‘commanding’ us to ‘stand out’. Don’t be like the others, be yourself, is what they are informing us in my eyes. ‘The Help’ is about achieving what others can not achieve. Many events could of prevented the maids from wanting to participate; shootings, abuse in the house and abuse from the white public. Nevertheless, they stuck together and made a book about Jackson,
