The film “Superstar”, by Todd Haynes, tells a controversial rendition of Karen Carpenter’s life story. Through his depiction of the Carpenter family and of the stressful lifestyle of a performer, Haynes shows the audience that although many mental illnesses, such as anorexia, are viewed as internally driven, the root cause of these conditions is almost entirely external. Throughout the film, the Carpenter family is characterized as an overprotective unit with very high and strict standards.
